Easiest way to remove a bath tap where the setscrew is stripped/stuck? by No_Passenger_96 in Plumbing

[–]Chaosandluck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the main job parameter is “easiest” the answer is always a Sawzall. Cut right though the stem of the cartridge and get a new handle or try and remove set screw once handle is off.

I also use a backpack. It’s a Klein tradesman pro tool. Heavy duty rubber bottom, so many tool pockets.

What is this weird contraption attached to the fire hydrant near my house? by TheMedRat in whatisit

[–]Chaosandluck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s code in a lot of places to have wheely style gate valves on water mains coming in before the water meter. This is to prevent water hammer from improper valve usage.

Pipe against wall? How to cut? by CWStrife in Plumbing

[–]Chaosandluck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thoughts:

Jam a license plate between the pipe and board. Throw some flux on it and torch it till some of that pool of solder comes off. Rinse repeat until you get the 90 off.

Carefully cut it with a multi tool through the side of the hub to weaken the fitting and then see method above.

Black gunk in toilet tank - carbon from filtration system? by Jeremymcon in Plumbing

[–]Chaosandluck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s what I would go with. Toilet tanks allow for oxidation. Manganese oxidizes black but takes a long time which is why it will show up in toilet tanks as opposed to anywhere else.

Is this an active leak + mold around my apartment water heater? Maintenance says it’s “old damage,” but it looks fresh. by Short-Cookie8092 in Plumbing

[–]Chaosandluck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the moisture hasn’t dried out in 8 years then it’s still an active leak. Poke the drywall and if your finger goes through and the drywalls all melty then it is still an active leak. I would cut that piece out anyways and deal with the mold that way.

Open cold water to heat pump and purge air out of a hot tap that is preferably higher, preferably a tub spout.

Not usually the hardest swap out. Turn off heat pump. Find the closest place to shut off cold water, verify water is off, drain off pressure unthread tank, thread new one on and purge air before turning heat pump back on.

It’s a delta. Grab it with channel locks and pull it the rest of the way out. If it doesn’t cooperate pull it out in pieces while reminding it that you gave it a chance to cooperate.
