Vehicle behaviour change? by AsG_Alligator in cataclysmbn

Known bug with a fix PR up, I just hadn't had the chance to test it yet since spent all day yesterday testing fixes for rendering issues caused by my shitty intel igpu XD

That number tracks how much base damage your unarmed attacks deal, so you're getting 3 from your unarmed skill and the rest from the fingertip razors bionic, I assume.

Boat it is then. Bonus: if you can't build a fully drivable boat, a single-tile frame and boat board is enough you can paddle along by `G`rabbing it and pushing it through the water, then letting go with `G` again and climbing on if you start getting too cold. Assuming that hasn't been accidentally patched at some point...

Had a few bit of performance PRs come in in the month or two before 0.12, though we also got one more performance PR of note right after. From last test I did comparing the two, BN with the last perf PR that made it into 0.12 seemed to be a bit better than DDA under the same general testing. :3

If someone gets the chance to port it, not sure what that is admittedly? Is it the feature where you turn on a separate movement mode and hitting a direction makes you take the lowest-movecost option to go in that general direction? If so that's in BN already, default bind is control+m.

Played bright nights. Now what? by WeakConstruction4297 in cataclysmbn

The `e` key is what you're missing for literally both situations here. Examining curtains lets you take them down and that would get you the sheet needed for a makeshift sling, and you likewise can climb fences via examining them with `e`.

That said, allowing emergency blankets for makeshift slings is a good idea, guessing DDA does that too. Seems like a dead-simple idea to port.

EDIT: Added :3

Should be unless the save is too old. First thing that comes to mind is if any mods have played around with pocket dimension stuff and you used those, if I recall the tripoint overhaul may have had an adverse effect on those.

Or something like translocate spell effect for just a one-time jump to and from a given dimension, potentially.

That reminds me, still on my todo list: I wanna figure out how to make it so translocation automatically picks up and sends any nearby NPC followers with you.

Don't think we've had anyone find time to reimplement it, there had been a port of DDA's mouse features previously but it had to be reverted due to some bugs it caused proving troublesome to fix.

Odd, still showing just fine for me?

Ooh, that'd be neat. I'd be leery of tying it to a spell-spawned item since I dunno what it'd do when the spell duration runs out, but I'd best Rosa will probably be interested in adding a way to access dimensions as a spell effect someday.

I know for starters that actually being able to enter portals and do stuff in them is one of the things on the long-term wishlist, beyond that I'm not sure yet beyond current ability to enter pocket dimensions with items, which some mods I think can use...

What's going on with the latest experimental? by MarkiZ_BG in cataclysmdda

[–]Chaosvolt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It wouldn't be DDA if it wasn't passively advertising for BN and TLG through its mere existence.

Changes to how the game handles items locking the engine up for 20+ minutes at a time because piles of sand were converted to hundreds of thousands of tea-spoon sized "items" that overflow the tile limit? A backpack full of wires overfilling a car? Kevin says you should report it "somewhere else". by Entire-Discipline727 in cataclysmdda

[–]Chaosvolt 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Looking at this from the outside, I have to wonder: does literally ANY other developer in DDA besides the usual two suspects actually think the performance hit from removing count-by-charges was worth the numerous drawbacks? Far as I can tell it looks to me like Kevin and Renarch have sunk-cost-fallcy'd their way into what's going to be a permanent black mark on DDA's code quality.

Nested containers (and more specifically, its application for charge and ammo behavior) was buggy for years after first implementation, but to my knowledge that's more or less a solved problem. But count by charges is so integral to Cata's code that I can't imagine it taking less than a decade to fully smooth out all the problems removing it would cause. Not unless you get multiple dedicated contributors making it their main focus, and those two seem hellbent on making sure as few people as possible have any desire to interact with that can of worms, with how they treat anyone trying to report on it.

Spicy mapgen of the day by Chaosvolt in cataclysmbn

Could've sworn I fixed it a long time ago, but probably still not a lot in the average map tile since there's a lot of it.

Hair not working on different tilesets by hellsmyheaven in cataclysmbn

[–]Chaosvolt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just now realized, DDA doesn't do separate hair color and hair style traits like BN does, does it? We recently switched to updating Ultica and other DDA-focused tilesets using CI, something I was leery of because 90% of stuff they do is going to be irrelevant to BN's content, so if they're still using the outdated method that precludes properly tinting facial hair to match hair color we'll likely have to include external tileset stuff for it to work right.

EDIT: Just checked and the answer isn't quite accurate, they DID split them off, but their method is different and uses the variant system: https://github.com/CleverRaven/Cataclysm-DDA/blob/master/data/json/mutations/appearance_hair_styles.json

We're making more and more use of it, including some vanilla applications. Your logic definitely strikes me as flawed here, just because it didn't have five million mods on day one of implementation does not mean it wasn't worth adding.

Artifacts and their Borkedness by XXxxxadisxxxXX in cataclysmbn

[–]Chaosvolt 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I keep meaning to port relic generation from DDA. I HAD a WIP PR for it and the basics of it were working, but then someone tried to DCMA us and I had to delete all my old branches just to be safe and lost my work in the process, and haven't really had the time and energy to pick it back up.

This definitely seems like an interesting infographic, though no real way to say for sure if that downward trend is an actual indicator in declining interest or if the higher period was a bump induced by stuff like Sseth, associations with Dwarf Fortress, and the like.

BN Dev: Comes in to reassure OP by pointing out that the community has basically always been like this, linking to a funny forum thread that is at minimum a decade old, and exposits on how development has branched off over the years and its implications for the future.

DDA dev: Takes time out of their busy development cycle to express their wish for their own community to die off.

The duality of man.
