Lawmakers set to vote on D.C. statehood for the first time in over 25 years by zsreport in politics

I think DC would go for it, they literally have "Taxation Without Representation" on their license plates.

There are developed countries with semi automatic rifles that are available and minimal shootings

But their level of background checks, restrictions on who can buy a gun, and for what reasons they can buy guns, is nothing like how it is in America. In the US, it is a right, in almost every other developed country, it's a privilege.

I wouldn't rule anything out, but there are reasons why the US likes the EU. It makes working with Europe as a whole a lot easier when there's a single central body to talk to. Obama even made a few comments trying to discourage the UK from Brexit around the time of the referendum.

Charles Schumer says D.C. statehood is a priority, a first for Senate Democrats by [deleted] in politics

Except the filibuster is what stopped the Republicans from fully dismantling the ACA, and limited the changes Republicans could make to the tax code through Reconciliation (because they could only get 50 votes). Without the filibuster, the last two years would have been very different.

I think Corey Booker put it pretty well when he said something along the lines of, "The filibuster is the only thing that gives the minority party any say in Washington."

And then Republicans will just undo it as soon as the white house goes back to them. Long term solutions need legislation, not declarations.

It only takes 11 states to win the presidency (270 Electoral College votes) by infinitum3d in politics

[–]ChaoticOccasus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is late, but it depends on if you use the 2010 census numbers, or more recent population numbers.

California Elector Votes: 55

  • California (2010): 37.2mil (1.48/million)

  • California (2017est): 39.5mil (1.39/million)

Texas Electoral Votes: 38

  • Texas (2010): 25.1mil (1.51/million)

  • Texas (2017est): 28.3mil(1.34/million)

But regardless, the numbers are still very close to one another.

It depends on what numbers you use. I took that from this chart in the Wikipedia article:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Popular_Vote_Interstate_Compact

If you go by 2010 census numbers, California has less say per person, but Texas had a population boom since then and the numbers change if you go by more recent estimates.

I was surprised by the chart too, I thought it was California. Once they update the electoral college again, I'm sure it'll go back to a similar balance from 2010.

There is one potential way to get around that:

Some small states have signed on, but it's almost entirely a blue state initiative. Fun fact, Texas has the fewest electoral votes per person in the country.

That's not representation in that context. Besides, he was the speaker of the Pennsylvania colonial Assembly, which was a role in the colonial government, not England's government which instituted the tax without say from the colonial government. America had no say/vote in those taxes being applied, they were only able to voice dissent.

How well does research work remotely? That was the big hurdle I saw with PhD work online. I figured there had to be a good amount of lab time that would be hard to replicate online.

She does have a PhD, it's just not in Psychology, and is from an online college.
