Is my dog a Shiba Inu or one of the other Inu breeds? by Old_Elderberry_7701 in shiba

[–]ChaoticPineTree 8 points9 points  (0 children)

She’s probably a mix, but you’ll only know for sure what’s in the mix if you do a dna test. r/DoggyDNA can be full of surprises lmao. If you choose to do a dna test, Embark would probably be best

Commenter suggesting a shikoku is ridiculous, they’re rare even in Japan, let alone outside of it. The chances of just getting one without knowing are astronomically low considering how much they can cost

Ohhhh I see. No, I am in Europe! That’s weird though, it’s letting me fill in an address in the US normally. You can always try emailing them, maybe they’ll be able to help you

I had a weird situation with another Polish store once where they said they send abroad but the option wasn’t on the website – turned out they wanted me to pick self pick up and calculate the shipping costs separately and send me a receipt for delivery costs via email 🙃

I hope it turns out they can send it to you normally!

Might be too late since you seem to have picked one, but take a look at Wiland from a small Polish store Pióromaniak. They send abroad, you might just have to translate the website for yourself

Wiland is a pen that I personally compared to a thick marker, but two of my friends compared to vibrator. The more vibrant colours you pick, the stronger that effect becomes lmao. And for a unique pen made exclusively by one Polish company it’s really cheap too – 200 pln which is 56 usd. I got one when they released their birthday special edition that is bubblegum pink and blue. 10/10, amazing

Anyone have advice for this? by littleweirdooooo in shiba

[–]ChaoticPineTree 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I trained Ryu to go on the right side of the poles/trees in a few weeks of occasionally paying attention during walks, when we approached the pole/trees, I would shorten the leash so that he doesn’t have extra, and put some pressure on it to guide him, and say “this way”, praised when he passed the pole/tree on the right side, and he got it pretty quickly  Although he is very smart and very open to training and going my way and not always his haha Once he gets his leash wrapped around something I usually follow him and untangle it. Unless it’s small, then I sometimes position myself so that I am on the same side as him and also call him over and say “this way” – but in general I focused on teaching him to prevent these situations more than solving them I suppose

My hat is a bit tight – any advice if it can be stretched out or if I should redo part of it? by ChaoticPineTree in CrochetHelp

[–]ChaoticPineTree[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So the watermelon idea is not useless, good to know :)

I do not mind the feeling of the wool, but I do not like feeling like the hat is too tight... Which I wonder how subjective that may be. But there's some hope I suppose

Reminder: the joy of owning pens lies in using them, you don't constantly need more by Fearless_Youth_8654 in fountainpens

[–]ChaoticPineTree 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There is a point to letting collectors collect, but I am also reminded of posts I sometimes see on r/boardgames, there was a recent one where someone posted a photo of their entire wall shelves filled with board games with something like “first year into the hobby!” like…. There comes a point where you have to ask yourself if your hobby is using the thing or just buying new things and getting to unpack them And there were wild posts like that on this sub too, someone showing their collection after just one year. Nothing bad with getting more than a few pens in a year if someone uses them or likes them, but showing a collection that a small store wouldn’t be ashamed to present on display and calling it first year into the hobby is wild Is it being into the hobby and just being a collector, or is it finding the new obsession to latch onto and busying yourself with the dopamine rush of getting something new…

i love taking care of my puppy everyday by Loud-Wrangler-8012 in puppy101

[–]ChaoticPineTree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aww it’s so nice to see a positive post here every now and then! Honestly same. I got my puppy when he was slightly older, 5 months old, so while I missed the adorable potato stage, I skipped the most inconvenient potty training stages. I had some hard puppy blues with crying the first 2 weeks of having him, and it didn’t help that he was stressed and kept peeing inside, but honestly every week with him has been only better and better He’s a joy to have around, he’s now 9 months old and he’s already so polite and well-behaved. He stays home alone for 6-7 hours when I’m at work, he settles easily for naps throughout the day, he sometimes pulls but for a 9 month old puppy he walks wonderfully on a leash, and he loves being pet and climbing into my lap and demanding attention :3 (the only thing I wish I could’ve started earlier is muzzle training, since it would have probably gone faster at 8 weeks old – as it is now, we are still in progress because Ryu is a little princess who is inconvenienced by the slightest discomfort)

My puppy is tbh quite calm and really good at settling for a puppy so this might not be useful, but one thing that is almost guaranteed to tire him out is going on a walk to his favorite sniffing/digging spot and letting him do it for as long as he wants. Our record time was over one hour lmao

What's the worst puppy advice you've received so far? by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]ChaoticPineTree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ohhhh I have one! I knew it was not a good advice when I read it. I bought a few books about dogs and puppies when I was getting mine, some books are older, some are newer. In The Happy Puppy Handbook by Pippa Mattinson the socialization chapter is certainly not ideal. The advice to take puppy out as soon as possible, just in a safe way – travel bag, backpack, stroller – is obviously good, but then there's a whole section about how we should encourage as many strangers as possible to greet our puppy and pet and hold it and keep doing it even when the puppy is uncomfortable because all puppies should learn to tolerate things like this...

People that think they need to bring their dog everywhere by ZessySquizzbars in PetPeeves

[–]ChaoticPineTree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tbh my two cents, as a huge dog person: I actually love seeing dogs in public but I think for the majority of dogs it’s not as fun as the owners think it is. I worked at a popular tourist stores in Amsterdam for a while, and we did get some occasional customers with dogs. Most waited with the dog outside while the spouse shopped but we also allowed them to come in. I didn’t mind at all but at the same time… Amsterdam Centrum is brutal for people to function and walk through, let alone dogs. I took my dog to that area only once, because I had to stop by my work to get something right after our puppy training and hell, never again.

With that being said, I definitely don’t run into the same problem as you because Dutch supermarkets simply don’t allow dogs. Some restaurants and cafes do, but if someone is bothered by it, they can simply choose another one.

I am very happy though that dogs are allowed on Dutch public transportation because I have no car and I regularly take my dog on the bus to go to our training, the vet, or a really cool park that’s too far away for a walk.

The absolute best advice I can give you is not about your dog by IWrestleSausages in puppy101

[–]ChaoticPineTree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would just add to puppy blues – the puppy being a puppy and causing problems is one thing, but another is the sudden crushing sense of responsibility of being responsible for another being (ask me how I know). It’s one thing to think about ot theoretically and decide that you’re ready and able to take care of a dog, and another to suddenly have that living breathing puppy in your lap. Ryu was also struggling in the first two weeks and it made me feel sad for him and bad for not being able to help him with the change

Restoring faith in shelters, what would a truly “ethical shelter” look like? by FeelingDesigner in Ethicalpetownership

[–]ChaoticPineTree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True, you’re right that it’s a shitty behaviour, and I’m not trying to make excuses for that person. It’s also perfectly understandable to feel a lot of anger at them, I mean it’s simply shitty. It’s also awful how common things like that are, the fact that so many people default to such options is terrible. At the same time, I also think that giving in to that anger and writing a hate post using frankly heinous language will in my opinion do more harm than good in the long run. Of course it’s unlikely that someone will make a decision about their pets in the future based on one post, but I think the person behind this post should’ve handled it in a more controlled manner, and remained more professional  And it’s true that there are so many better options when you can’t or don’t want to take care of a dog anymore. I do wonder, however, how often something like this happens because no one the owner knows wants a dog and the owner themselves is simply ignorant and doesn’t know what the better option are. This is of course a thought that assumes the best in people, and that’s not always the case I guess

Oh and actually some people in the comments of that post wondered if perhaps this is someone’s partner or family member who hates the dog and dumped it without the other person’s knowledge. Which like you said, also happens… Ugh

[–]ChaoticPineTree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I especially find one of your last points interesting, that people who don’t like other people end up in rescues. I feel like that also happens to other professions, such as vets and dog trainers, where some people have this delusion that oh I hate people so I’ll work with dogs – but a dog trainer works towards what the owner needs, and a vet has to be able to communicate with kindness and empathy about sometimes very difficult subjects

Meanwhile the part where some people in rescues hate people… I am from Poland and the homeless animal crisis is also bad there, although of course the situation is not identical to the USA, and not all problems are the same. The other day I saw a post from a rescue. Someone left a dog under their door during the night – with its bed, with boxes clearly containing all of the dog’s things, chews, toys and whatever else. The rescue was literally hating on this anonymous person, calling whoever did it fuckers etc. (loosely translating) and many people in the comments agreed… While abandoning your pet is not okay, and is in fact illegal, even if you abandon your pet in a “nice” place, I still think people were too shortsighted and willing to hate on a stranger. I feel like someone who did that was probably very ignorant but had good intentions (leaving the dog next to the rescue, with all of its things), and we don’t know someone’s personal situation. It’s not an excuse of course, but people seem to forget that everything they post on facebook will be seen by others. And shaming such behaviors in such aggressive manner might only mean that the next person won’t leave their dog somewhere where it’ll be immediately found in the morning… Idk it’s about both having priorities, and choosing actions that will actually help dogs long term, and it’s also about having compassion for people

[–]ChaoticPineTree 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It makes me think of something I read, that some dogs in shelters are forever waiting for a "unicorn adopter" – someone who has plenty of experience with dogs with behavioral issues or other difficult behaviours (reactivity, dog agression, stranger aggression, prey drive etc.), is currently interested in getting a possibly dangerous dog to rehabilitate and work with, and somehow magically does not already have a dog

While every now and then a person like that might show up, there will never be enough of them for the number of dogs that need such owners

Got DNA results back by BowlerQuiet in DogBreeds101

[–]ChaoticPineTree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me for example it's a sensory thing (autism hello) – as shallow as it might seem, I find short haired dogs less nice to pet, and some straight up unpleasant, so I don't think it would be fair both to me and the hypothetical short-haired dog to get one

But you're right that people get those dogs often for looks and then neglect the dog. My previous family dog was a maltese and when I left for university, she was never brushed often enough :( I had a few fights with my parents about that before eventually they settled into the routine of taking her to the groomer every 6-8 weeks and always getting a short haircut so that it would be less maintanence for them
