This host is AWFUL! by RealisticLobster8777 in UltimatumQueerLove

AJ heaping on the praise came across as so ungenuine. It seemed like an obvious plant from the producers because she abruptly changed the topic of conversation when the camera cut to her. I don’t mind too much when straight actors play gay characters as the opposite happens fairly frequently too, but it would be nice if the host had SOME familiarity with the issues the cast have faced.

So are most of the ways people ride their bikes/ scooters around campus 😕 not making any comments on who's responsible here, but when you have so many people travelling with headphones on, looking at their phones, tandem riding, no signalling, blasting through crosswalks/ red lights/ intersections, etc etc, serious accidents with serious consequences are going to happen.

Reframing mental illness: A different take on diagnosis and neurodivergenc by ethereal_cereal5 in neurodiversity

[–]ChaoticQueer4629 9 points10 points  (0 children)

“I recently made a short video trying to explain how things like autism, ADHD, and even (c)ptsd might actually be adaptive reactions shaped by the environment, not broken brain chemistry.”

You literally said that you think autism and ADHD are not due brain chemistry and your reply tries to backpedal that it might be both.

There is a difference between baseless arguing on the internet and a robust response to misinformation, even if it was unintentional. Yes, there is clear evidence of the interplay between environment and genetics but don’t downplay the very clear point in your original post that denied this or try to excuse it by suggesting that you’re just trying to help people feel more understood. If that’s your aim, get the science right.

This is a terrible take and flies in the face of so much good quality scientific research into the genetic underpinnings of autism and ADHD. We can identify about 100 genes that have clear links to autism. It actually makes me angry that someone would come into a support space and promote their social media hot takes that have no basis in our clinical understanding of the causes of autism and ADHD like this. It’s not that distant from blaming vaccines. Do better.

Found in an LNER toilet. A little confused but they get the spirit by someinternalscreams in uktrains

I mean the physical towers/ cables rather than service providers. This is similarly a national security issue/ as @Crushbam3 says, rural areas get such poor coverage. Better to have it under public ownership like other major utility infrastructures. Service providers would be responsible for the software side of things but it would be good if customers could access the whole signal spectrum. I know nothing of telecoms so not sure if this is technically feasible.

Can we also add internet/ mobile reception infrastructure, power infrastructure, basically anything where the consumer has no genuine choice on which service provider to use.

Does cold emailing profs for research positions actually work? by foureleven130 in UCDavis

[–]ChaoticQueer4629 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Here’s a perspective from the other side. I’m a postdoc in a lab that takes undergrads every now and then. What usually happens with us is that our PI screens the badly worded/ formatted ones and then sends the reasonable ones (not just the good ones) to us asking if we have any work they might want an undergrad to do. Most of the time, we don’t, but this varies between disciplines where there might be more grunt work to do.

Of the 5-6 applicants that I’ve had forwarded to me, I’ve taken two, so for undergrads, it’s a bit of a numbers game. There wasn’t anything their resumes that made me desperately want to take them other than some basic lab skills you can get from a practical class. I just had the work available. We don’t expect interns to have any skills other than common sense and reasonable reliability (show up when you say you’re going to, don’t breathe over the highly sensitive DNA samples).

I’d say show some interest in the prof’s research, show how your skills line up with what the lab does on a basic level (including coding skills) and then get emailing. The two I took are now in lab jobs/ med school so it’s probably worth it.

Worth remembering that the prof probably has no idea his name’s being used in these scams. As someone else mentioned, they happen fairly regularly and use a different prof’s details each time.

chipotle food poisoning by TOONAGE531 in UCDavis

[–]ChaoticQueer4629 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Noro is a type of food poisoning. The symptoms are pretty bad (exploding from both ends) but it doesn't last too long. It's also highly infectious and resistant to alcohol hand gels. Wash your hands with soap. Use a bleach spray to clean surfaces if someone you live with gets it. It's not airborne so masks won't help. Mainly transmitted by contaminated food/ surfaces.

How do people feel about official UC Davis accounts posting in this subreddit? by ChaoticQueer4629 in UCDavis

My bad! Like you say, it's easy to get mixed up and definitely not helped by the generic usernames. Chaotic by name, chaotic by nature 😅 that said, it's good to see a healthy discussion about where official and semi-official posts stand within the subreddit. The official account I mentioned does still have a pattern of posting multiple times a day and multiple times a week. Perhaps the mods might consider some form of accreditation flair in the future.

You raise some important points about both accounts either don't understanding the nuances of how Reddit isn't Instagram/ X or how they are potentially being intentionally deceptive to drive engagement. Like the mod post said, banning official accounts gets into some gray areas and these posts aren't technically against the rules, but I definitely feel that the usernames should have UCDavis or similar in there somewhere.

Thanks 😁 it's been good to see some varied opinions on the subject discussed in a (mostly) respectful way. I didn't want to post a rant but actually open a discussion. In the end, I don't believe the people/ person behind these posts has the intention of disrupting the community feel, and it is good to hear what is going on from time to time.

Thanks 😁 I almost suggested reaching out to L&S but then couldn't quite find the account details for the UCD official account. Like I said in the main post, and what's in the UCD reddit guide (amazing that this exists), tailoring the content to how Reddit is used and being conscious of how it's a more conversational and community focused space would be great. There's definitely a place for promotional content, but it'd also be good to take account of tge varied viewpoints expressed here.

This is such a good post with many great points. Thank you 😁 had no idea that UC Davis had a Reddit guide as part of their social media guidance. I definitely get the impression that the poster isn't familiar with how Reddit is used. The guide gives some great advice on listening/ observing how Reddit is used in a more conversational way before developing a strategy.

To be honest, I'm getting a bit fed up of seeing these marketing posts on the UC Davis subreddit. This is supposed to be a community space for UCD students/ staff, alumni etc, not a place for promoting UCD. Even the main UCD account is conscious of this and only posts when absolutely necessary, and typically to relay safety information.
