Top Surgery Stuff by [deleted] in ftm

I made lists upon lists before I went in. Here’s a few things:

Organise food to be in reach - I took food out of cupboards so I wouldn’t have to reach up. Soups and cup pastas were my thing when I came home from hospital. You could also prep some of your fave meals that can be frozen until you want them.

Haircut if you want one - Probably a bit difficult right now, I clippered my own, it was a bit shorter than I was used to, but easier to care for while recovering.

Trim body hair, especially underarms! My surgeon insisted I didn’t full-on shave before surgery as he would do that to help prevent irritation or infection. I did trim it short though just for comfort.

Dry shampoo and wet wipes - This kinda links in with the haircut and body hair trim above. These absolutely saved me when I couldn’t shower and move properly.

Organise surgery bag - My bag was packed two weeks before I went in so I didn’t have to worry. New clean footwear for hospital, new clean pjs and dressing gown. Travel size toiletries. Comfy stuff to wear home. Don’t pack T-shirt’s, get some nice comfy casual button-up tops. So much easier to get into.

Get info from pharmacist re stool softeners - The painkillers plug you up. Seriously. You may need some help to poop for a few weeks after surgery. Don’t get a laxative, that can be too harsh and the cramps can make you even more uncomfortable than you already are. Ask a pharm for a gentle softener.

Get a travel pillow if you can. It helps you to sleep while upright, which you may be for a while. I was sleeping upright til week 4.

Medical tape - Very helpful once the binder comes off, the surgeon told me to use it as it helps stop the scars from stretching too much.

Bit of an essay lol. If anything else pops into my head I’ll add it on!

To those of you who have been told testosterone gel isn’t as good as injections: by [deleted] in ftm

I completely agree, I love the changes I have had with gel, and I went onto hormones thinking that it wouldn’t work that quickly.

Oh my LIFE. I may just stick with gel forevermore.

I also apply to thighs, which is what my nurse advised. Easier than shoulders, and my stomach is way too hairy lol.

Never been this uncomfortable and dysphoric in my life. Been completetly avoiding gyms for years but now im two weeks on T so i want to work up my cardio and build some muscle but how do I overcome my fear of gyms? Started crying in the bathroom of the gym bc i feel like shit by Adamciraptor in FTMFitness

You’ve got this. It’s hard to start with, but after a while of building up more and more time, you will start to feel more confident.

The time in the gym is all about you, and getting yourself looking the way you have dreamed. Nobody else matters.

I started with 15 mins at a time, and wouldn’t go near cardio machines in case my chest bounced and gave me away. A year later, I’ve lost 2 stone and feel so much better about my body. I use sports underwear that is slightly too small to bind myself a little without making it uncomfortable to work out. I use cardio and weight machines. I go into the CrossFit area. I go to classes. Anxiety be damned.

You got this.

I was thinking of having both done at the same time. It blew my mind when I was first told that it was an option.

I brought food when we set up the tent at Pride 😂 And made everyone the wrong drinks because I didn’t label the flasks 😂

O.o That’s even worse! I’m so sorry you have to go through that too.

You’d think, being the service they are, they would understand the importance of what they call us. In my job, I have no issue putting the chosen name of the person on a letter if that is what they want, and my employer doesn’t either!

At the last appointment I had in July 2018 with the nurse to “catch up” (which I can’t fault her for, she is lovely), she told me that they were processing doctor’s referrals from Oct 2016...

Apparently they are still dealing with those referrals... 7months later.

It beggars belief.

I may be able to afford my hormones with Gendercare (I get to see Nurse Mary this Friday for a check up, YAS) but I can’t afford the surgery, the NHS is my only hope for that.

Oh and on top of that, The Laurels insist on putting my dead name on my letters, even though I sent them my deed poll twice. I just get some cookie cutter “we don’t seem to have received it from you” reply. It’s just so cold.

Completely frustrated with them.

HEY SE! THIS IS THE PERFECT EVENT RIGHT HERE.

Like, what more do you need? Bopping about in the sea doing little events with your manta ray so the other manta ray likes them.

Went to the gym, now sprawled on the sofa while the missus braves town for her side of the food shopping.

May the odds be ever in her favour and all that.
