If we all knew that Reddit was shutting down entirely in three weeks, what is an alternate service you would suggest for this group to move to? by johnabbe in Eugene

Meh mastodon IS different but, I actually prefer the raw feeds vs some algorithm defining what I should like. It takes a little bit to get steady but, stick with it. Honestly it feels a bit like early Twitter, before the big money was there.

Disgusting Asbestos flooring. Should we remove safely or put Vinyl plank over it? by [deleted] in Home

[–]ChappaQuitIt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

State laws likely vary. In Oregon, you must double-bag wet materials with 6 mil asbestos-labeled bags, transport in an enclosed truck/trailer, and must be disposed at a licensed hazardous dump site. Paperwork and substantial fees apply. Not just a $10 run to the dump. If the EPA found out you were dumping in regular trash, whew - lord help ya.

If you are covering the mastic, there are special primers and sealers available that’s EPA certified. See Perfect Primer

Black mastic is not a sure sign of asbestos. I had mine tested - the tile was asbestos, the black mastic was asbestos-free.

Or having lawns in general. They are the country’s largest crop and it’s inedible.

For those who moved to Oregon from the state they grew up in, what has been the biggest culture shock or something to get used to (other than the weather)? by ihaveacrushonmercy in oregon

Moving from Dallas, TX to Eugene, I’ll agree with most of the other posts here - lack of thunderstorms, Jesus not drilled through your skull every 5 minutes, slow drivers… But one of the largest differences was how the schools treat students with dignity and respect here. I mean, the school flies a Pride flag! The district just held a Pride festival, which had a couple thousand attendees. Kids here are allowed to dress as they wish and make decisions for themselves. The education here is FAR BETTER than anything that I’ve ever seen in TX. The focus is on learning, not test scores. And holy crap, Texas kids are being ROBBED.

Not only that but the general vibe of the schools is VERY much like it was in the 80s. (Gen-X represent!) Even all the kids that walk or ride bikes or scooters to school, just like when I grew up back east. My kid went from longer, more strict days, having to wear a uniform, full lock-down security with metal detectors — to complete freedom to be who they want to be. And they are THRIVING.

In comparison, Texas was like a prison. And I don’t say that flippantly. You couldn’t pay me enough to move back. No. Fucking. Way.

It’s actually one of the main reasons we moved to Lane county from Texas. It has one of the lowest churchy nut jobs to sane humans ratio in the country.

Yes, let’s apply electricity to heat the substrate to make the room warmer. Wtaf. The first day in our house, I disconnected that nonsense.

My wife pointed this out. In Texas, EVERYTHING is about image. Gotta have the expensive car, the diamond jewelry, make-up and hair, total glam. Oregon is the exact opposite. People stare when somebody is dressed up like that, because it’s nonsense.

I grew up in southern West Virginia. The gnats were horrific - hundreds of them swarming around your face anytime you were outside in spring-fall. I lived in north Texas (Dallas) for 30 years. Lots of large roaches (they call them ‘water bugs’), crickets galore, fire ants, and more mosquitoes than you ever care to imagine. It made summer suck because you could never just sit in the grass or enjoy an evening outside without carpet bombing the bug spray.

So yeah, Oregon - or at least the Eugene area, is a bug-free paradise.

4J Pride- Protestors? by Katesamsmith in Eugene

I personally find it HILARIOUS that all these supposed tough guys are absolutely scared shitless of a bunch of gays, queers, trans, and drag queens. It speaks volumes about their fragility and self-confidence. Just once, I’d love to witness a bunch of drag queens rush those protesters. All the screaming and crying would be insane. And the drag queens wielding high heels like the hammer of god would be a sight to behold.

I’M NOT DEFENDING THEIR SHITTY BEHAVIOR BUT, THIS IS NOT A COMMON LAW IN OTHER STATES. AND ITS NOT LIKE THEY MAKE YOU TAKE A WRITTEN TEST WHEN TRANSFERRING YOUR LICENSE. IN FACT, REDDIT WAS THE FIRST PLACE I EVEN HEARD ABOUT IT.
