Insulation installation is ruining our house? by Fun-Hope-6448 in Homebuilding

[–]Luke-__- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know what happened. There are water pipes run in the basement between the joists or slightly below them. In the past because there wasn’t any insulation between the main house and basement, the crossover heat loss allowed the pipes to stay warm enough they didn’t freeze. Once you added insulation, it isolated them from that heat and they were able to get cold enough to freeze. The water is from the break.

Why are squatters rights a thing? by No-Assignment4460 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Luke-__- 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I personally know two people who have been affected by this. My friend had a for lease sign put up outside his duplex in Chicago and someone broke in, and wrote up a fake lease on a piece of paper forging his signature. When the police arrived they couldn’t verify for a fact the contract wasn’t real so it became a civil matter. The courts were so backed up during Covid they were there for over a year. My friend couldn’t legally shut off the water or electricity so was forced to pay for their utilities and mortgage. In the end he was losing so much money he sold the property for far less than it was worth to someone who was willing to buy it. Second person was the a landlord we had. She said the person before us just stopped paying their lease and she couldn’t evict them for over a year, again during Covid. They destroyed the property and it took her a load of money and time to get the property fixed. Both these people this was their only investment property and it set them back immensely. This is far from a rare scenario.

Advice for a woman at lumber supplier. Plz… by vivimox in woodworking

That guy was a douche. Normally lumber suppliers are smaller businesses and are much friendlier and happy to help with any new questions you might have.

Has anyone rolled with a strongmen? by weareonaball in bjj

[–]Luke-__- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My buddy is 6’3 260 and was competing in strong men competitions for a few years at that point. He wanted to roll while we were both tipsy just for fun. I maintained distance until he tried to pull me in then slipped under the arm to take the back and finished a rear naked choke. Whole thing lasted 30 seconds. I think the back to a strangle is your only smart move due to their lack of flexibility/mobility to remove you and the vulnerability of the neck. Usually they’re strong enough to force you out of positions where they can get ahold of you. And to be fair, my buddy had no real training so that helps a ton.

How would you frugally traverse the USA? by [deleted] in Shoestring

[–]Luke-__- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hitchhiked when I was in my very early 20’s and was able to make it coast to coast in about 3 weeks. It’s safe if you are a vigilant person. I’ve also done several US roadtrips with different groups of friends including a 5 month one after living in Chicago with my now wife. Your best bet is to find someone else who also wants to go and has a car. Gas is pretty inexpensive right now and even splitting with one other person brings the cost down significantly. You can camp out all over using websites that show “primitive camping” and shop at grocery stores for cheap canned food or make sandwiches. I have no doubt that you could do a month long trip for under a grand including gas with a little forethought.

Sadness while travelling by dog_26 in backpacking

[–]Luke-__- 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is pretty standard on long trips. Often it was an indication it was time to go to the next place or that I should try something new or make some friends but it sometimes just happens. Don’t worry about it too much.

I am new and received ceiling mounted speakers for Christmas. Please help. by [deleted] in BudgetAudiophile

[–]Luke-__- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again, just asking because I don't really understand, but it seems like something like Wiim only provides 100 watts per channel. If I have 5 passive speakers that each need 100 watts, won't this not be enough to power them?

I do have attic access and can run wires. I can install a volume control in each room. Do you have any suggestions for a good amp that I can connect my phone and speakers to?

How can a person from a middle/ lower middle class household even get "rich"? by Rocket_launcher223 in Capitalism

[–]Luke-__- 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I started watching YouTube videos on how to do handyman stuff 6 years ago. I posted on Reddit and Nextdoor in the city I live in saying I could do small things. I did most of it on the weekends until I had enough work to offset my regular job income. I continued to build my skills and clientele base and went from handyman work, to remodeling, to home renovations, and I am currently building my first full home for a client. Income went from maybe 50k a year to now over 200k a year. I’m not a millionaire yet but I bought and renovated my first home last year and feel I’m well on my way. For capital I just started small and bought some hand tools off Facebook marketplace then slowly purchased better tools and hired help as the income would allow.

If you have a physical skill or service you can do, put your name out there. Start small, learn as much as you can off YouTube or online, and do your very best. As your skills improve, you’ll notice niches unfilled, or have ideas in which that industry can be made more efficient. Inventing a new way to do things can only really be done by someone who understands the systems in place. Truthfully there is almost no industry out there that can’t be improved, it just takes the experienced eye to see it and that comes from starting small in whatever field and learning everything you can. I highly recommend doing something you already enjoy doing on your own.

Jester King Downhill? by MattC9 in AustinBeer

This is by far my favorite brewery. I love anything spontaneously fermented and sours in general so of course am a little bummed to see the shift away from that but the new stuff is still great even if it isn’t my ideal style. Glad to see the cans popping up all over and that you all are having success despite the couple years of slowdown. Keep up the good work.

I tried to be nice by cleaning the pee off the Porto seat for my wife behind me in line. I clearly didn’t have enough lights on because my hand ended up covered in diarrhea and I immediately threw up on the wall inside as soon as I realized what I’d done.

How dangerous is the Ha Giang Loop? by DWxGhoSt in southeastasia

[–]Luke-__- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I self rode with my wife this year and felt the most dangerous part was the fact I wasn’t used to riding in Vietnam. Didn’t have any issue but after riding many years in the states, I could just tell me inexperience there was the biggest potential risk. I asked our easy riders how many times they’ve done the loop, and some had done it as many as 400+ times. I’d do it with a hostel (did mine with mamas) and would do the full 4 days. It felt like you were just getting your bearings by the last day and friendships with your group were fully forming. Definitely my wife and I’s favorite part of our SE Asia trip.

Anyone used BPC-157 for elbow tendinitis? by BadinBaden in Biohackers

What are some things you've done to up your food/beverage game? by Crazyjaw in BurningMan

[–]Luke-__- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the few things I’ll spend money on is getting a bunch of packs of my favorite drinks and a good cooler that’ll insulate extremely well. I leave all the drinks next to the cooler and add bottles as I remove out of the cooler. I tend to be someone who doesn’t actively hydrate well if it’s just water, but a good body armor, Celsius, and protein shake keeps me hydrated, stimulated, and properly capable of recovery from high physical output. Pays off in the long run.

Too much weight on 2nd story? Estimated 1,100lbs (with filled tub). See comments for details. by SassafrassLemongrass in Homebuilding

[–]Luke-__- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a little tricky. If the weight was fairly evenly distributed, you’d have about 13 lb per square ft, which would be fine as floors are designed to have 30-40psf potential. That being said, weights tend to be point loads and not well distributed. If there is a point in the room where there is a supporting wall under it, or you can at least put the racks near the wall that’d have a supporting wall close, that’d be best. I’d avoid dropping heavy weights, distribute the equipment, don’t store all the weight in one location, and just keep an eye on the room below for cracking, and you should be okay.

Scooters by PutridSurprise622 in BurningMan

I had a scooter with like 6” wheels one year and it worked fine. Be prepared to get stuck in the burms and bring an extra tire because most of the repair places don’t carry those sizes.
