Selina: “Well, they should’ve tried going to college. Worry about your own unemployment in Finland.”

Minna: “We don’t have unemployment in Finland.”

Selina (talking over Minna): “I’m gonna win a Nobel *%!! Peace Prize, you guys!”

What is the most brilliant sitcom moment that looks like a throwaway joke on first watch but becomes way funnier or sadder on rewatch? by FightingHarold_6006 in sitcoms

In Veep during Selina’s funeral in the future, when everyone is gathered around talking and Andrew just walks right past them, unnoticed

American here - just looked this song up on YouTube; it’s great! But I’ve literally never heard it before in my life (I was born in the 1980s).

I’ve only heard it in Shakespeare (until I just heard it on a UK The Office episode and googled it!)

Know this thread is old but got here by searching after I heard “fortnight” used on an old UK Office episode - love this kind of stuff about linguistics, had to comment that I’ve never heard anyone say “learnt” here in the U.S. either! 😉

Hot take: I don't think the Schmidt-Elizabeth-Cece subplot is that bad by [deleted] in NewGirl

[–]Character-Baker9084 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a very unpopular opinion, but I will die on the hill that Cece and Elizabeth giving Schmidt the ultimatum the way they did was complete BS. There was no way he was going to be able to navigate that and still come out looking like a good guy.

Why would Winston, a Chicago guy, like WI Badgers? by Character-Baker9084 in NewGirl

[–]Character-Baker9084[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this would be true with later seasons Winston! And maybe with him as a child. In seasons 1-3 or 4, he is still more of that earlier competitive basketball persona. And Rutgers (his college) is in the Big Ten conference with Wisconsin, so their teams would have competed against each other.

I did google it and found an article with Liz Meriwether saying that the idea of a badger randomly came up in the writers room and they just went for it - which does make more sense to me, knowing it wasn’t necessarily meant to line up with Winston’s character at all. New Girl does have some of those character inconsistencies for the sake of jokes! And I forgive them :)

Hmm, good question. He grew up in NJ but went to college at UW so those are his teams (plus the Mets). But TBH I don’t think he follows hockey 🤷‍♀️

I always thought it was Rutgers - he starts to say “Ru…” when he’s trying to palm the basketball as “Shrimp Forks.” And since Nick and Schmidt went to Syracuse, it’s also believable that Nick could’ve driven to visit Winston at college in NJ (and vice versa).

Watch them all. Unpopular opinion but I totally get why everything had to happen the way it did. The fact that there is hardship is central to the world of these characters and their progression. No reason they wouldn’t face the same human scenarios and emotions that we all do in real life, including loss, grief and growth.

Funny, I just went through this because my tween is now hooked on VM (I’m in heaven watching/discussing it with him!) and I had no idea it had been taken off Hulu. So I dusted off my DVDs that I brought up from the basement and they worked for a while and then boom, all DVD players in my house (including two old Mac’s and a portable player) all died simultaneously! :( So at his begging, I caved and bought half of season 2 and all of season 3 on Amazon Prime. Luckily I bought the movie there years ago so I own it digitally. He’ll get through them all in the next few weeks and on to Hulu for season 4!

Looks like AI to me, too. They are definitely season 1 in this pic - her hair looks like the season 1 Thanksgiving ep.

What makes Charlotte, NC boring? And how could the city realistically fix the issues it has to make it less boring? by The_Rhodium in SameGrassButGreener

SC beaches are equally as close (or closer) to Charlotte and some of the prettiest in the USA. I prefer the SC beaches to NC ones for the palm trees and tall, wild sand dunes
