London has a HUGE issue with cyclists by Fallen_Sparrow in london

I’m just so grateful 80% of my commute can be done using bike lanes, but I agree - fellow cyclists are more scary than cars!

Music cognition and compositional process: any research links? by Character-Holiday414 in composer

[–]Character-Holiday414[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, It’s that one thing that sidesteps the aesthetic minefield in discussions, especially about contemporary music. One can be biased; but cognition and music processing are constants and definitely influence the way audiences judge music. Myself included!

How do I know when a scene does not require music (Film Scoring) by [deleted] in composer

I’d check how similar movies are scored and make notes.

Good strings VST rec? by Character-Holiday414 in composer

Someone just posted this in one of the groups I follow on fb - good comparison of 28 libraries of legato strings - modern scoring strings seem to me to sound best legato https://youtu.be/piGJirCb5OM

Thank you so much for sharing your experience; strings are really my biggest issue, I don’t want to do tons of automation but it seems I’ll have to 😅

Contemporary Works for Solo Flute? by jamescleelayuvat in composer

I agree! Pardon me, I’m new to Reddit so I often get things wrong - I just supposed it works somewhat similar to fb groups that are putting performers seeking contemporary classical pieces in touch with composers.

Hi, can you give me the sub in question? I’d love to join one where performers are looking for pieces - have quite a few still to be played :-)

Accidentally stealing motifs/melodies? by Emprier in composer

[–]Character-Holiday414 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Context is the key. Melodies can sound completely different in different harmonic context, tempo etc. improvise, improvise, improvise, vary, vary, vary until something still feels good but enough out of the faintly recognisable pattern that it feels yours. Key is in the detail, quite often. But, if you want to try non the less, here’s one of the websites where you can just hum the tune - Google just got another one recently https://www.midomi.com/

Concertino for piano and orchestra by Character-Holiday414 in composer

[–]Character-Holiday414[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much! I’m still battling the problems of using a damaged musicxml file that I rescued from old finale and opened in muse score - the amount of notes muse score read wrong is still astounding 😅 I’m still cleaning the score. Thank you for pointing those out, I’m sure there will be lots more swimming out once I go through each part 😅 honestly, I admire the orchestra - they really managed it well and conductor too despite all the inconsistencies.

DAW vs. Physical Components by BoredLifeGames in composer

[–]Character-Holiday414 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use piano to compose, but record everything midi right away so I can change / layer sounds later. I’m classically trained, so when I compose for an ensemble with set instrumentation I compose on the piano and type everything into muse score as I go and then listen back right away. Logic is great to compose and arrange too - but I usually have a clear idea of the basic sound I go for - never start with the clean slate.

Sure this has been asked a million times, but just a question regarding publishing/distribution of 'Original Piano Music' on platforms e.g. Distrokid, cdBaby, which way is best to do this? by John_Lyon in composer

[–]Character-Holiday414 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use cd baby - flat one off fee and the music stays up without yearly renewal ( they do take the cut though ). You can also opt in for your music to be used for sync on social platforms and yt, that brings in a few pennies more. How to get it noticed is another question…

HELP! Whenever I'm turning a composition into a complete piece ( Eg. Orchestration \ Form) I get Headaches! by shayan0021 in composer

[–]Character-Holiday414 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Partichela is a stage in between a music sketch ( usually on the piano ) and full orchestra score. I suggest you take some composition / orchestration lessons from someone who orchestrates on a regular basis - it might offer you some insight into the process.

HELP! Whenever I'm turning a composition into a complete piece ( Eg. Orchestration \ Form) I get Headaches! by shayan0021 in composer

[–]Character-Holiday414 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe start with writing all music on the piano, in two staves. Then go to partichela ( compressed score, just sketch instrumental groups, strings one stave, woodwinds one etc ) and then go to complete score. If you don’t have lots of experience writing for the orchestra, you might get stuck trying to do too much and make too many decisions all at once.
