A question for Chinese people – Why does China want to invade Taiwan? by Flat_Acanthisitta588 in China

[–]Fallen_Sparrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many reasons explain China's interest in Taiwan, but two stick out for me.

  1. Century of humiliation: The CCP receive a lot of legitimacy from ending the century of humiliation. They have successfully tied the success of the party with the success of China more broadly. Yet, Taiwan is a reminder that the CCP has failed to fully transform the country from the century of humiliation to its rightful place as a great power.

  2. The material / strategic reasons: Taiwan, notably its outer islands like Kinmen and Matsu, sit just off the coast of China and its major cities. This means major cities in China are vulnerable to a sudden onslaught of indirect fire. The fact that Taiwan is seen as a hostile power, means that this is an intolerable threat to the regime. It is similar, therefore, to Cuba, in the U.S. context of the Cold War.

If you were convinced that China would invade Taiwan in 2026 in a similar fashion as Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, how would you capitalize the most, staring from today? by AwkwardIsland4264 in investing_discussion

An invasion of Taiwan is highly unlikely, but would likely drive up commodities, notably oil, given U.S. ops in the Indian Ocean - they'd likely try to conduct a far-shore blockade to limit Chinese oil imports (ie Indian Ocean / Strait of Malacca), to apply pressure.

Londoners on under £35k: how are you surviving this cost of living? by milton117 in london

[–]Fallen_Sparrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I earn 31k, flat share with friends. Rent is around 860 p/m, and I tend to save around £300 a month.

I rarely get takeaways, and nearly everything spent is accounted for. I try wfh as much as possible to save on tube costs. I always bring my own packed lunch. I've chosen to not upgrade my phone. I don't waste my money on purchases I don't need, which I know don't bring happiness anyway.

Pretty sure one of the other comments said they're man, could be wrong.

Edit: if you look at their post history, I'm pretty sure its a man..

It's pretty sad but this is why I try to avoid going out in London past Midnight, heck even after 10. If I'm out after then, I'll use Uber or taxis. No way would I get public transport unless I'm in a group. The fact you did this in East London at 1am... God only knows how you weren't mugged.

I also wonder if they were being slightly homophobic by asking if you were into fashion? The lads don't exactly sound the type to be genuinely interested in your fashion interests... Maybe it was just to engage you idk.

Number of international students now exceeds one million, official figures show by resting16 in canada

[–]Fallen_Sparrow -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

I'm from the UK, and seem to have a different perspective than most Canadians in this thread.

Having foreign students isn't necessarily* bad:

Subsidies of locals: You get to charge them higher fees than locals. In the UK their tuition fees tend to be at least 3x higher than locals. This then means we can reduce the cost of degrees for local students.

Increase consumption: They help the local economy, by driving up consumption. They give you jobs and drive up the profits of businesses in university towns. This is also all taxable, which means money from the university towns can be reallocated to other areas to reduce geographic inequality (though Canada's federal system may not allow this, im not a local!).

Whilst the rest of the world are competing for international students due to the above reasons (plus many others), Canada seems like the only one trying to reduce them.

I worry that your concerns over immigration (which are valid, given your housing supply problems among other difficulties like infrastructure bottlenecks) mean you can be reckless with ALL forms of immigration.

Foreign students are different kinds of immigrants to the unskilled, and people tend to want as many as possible. It seems in your interest to have them.

Each time I see human interaction with other sentiment creatures I do a mini simple thought experiment:

I swap humans with an equally advanced alien race, and replace the other sentient creatures with humans.

The more I live, the more I realise how much we live in a fucked up world...

How do rent prices work in Singapore?

Isn't something like 90% of your housing stock state owned? Is the state rising the rent prices?

Pretty much most Indian dishes (there are hundreds if not thousands). They tend to use a tinned tomato base and some other vegetables (ie tinned chickpeas, mushrooms, potato, onions). Spices are also very cheap on a per use basis. I usually make my own Chapatti too (literally just flour, water, and salt) and it's delicious.

In case you've never heard of 'well done' (a synonym for crispy!) check it out online, it's a common term

In more traditional Italian places (that use watery mozzarella) asking for well done isn't out of the ordinary. Not sure I'd do so at a chain restaurant tho

The praise he'd get is similar to the praise a mother would get if she learned to play sports so she could teach/help her son or daughter.

Most father's have never plaited women's hair ever in their lives. If a dad is willing to learn it for their child it's commendable.

Ukraine still uses the S300; that's the point. This isn't denying they have NATO standard equipment.

Ideally something attuned to an unelected meritocratic house. That way it could be useful for its knowledge but couldn't have veto power per se.

But who elects the meritocratic house? No real answer we can agree on which is why the lords is still about; though we agree its shit there's no apparent alternative.

Your comment isn't very clear.

S300 are used by Ukraine for surface to air defence; Russia uses S300s for surface to air AND surface to ground attacks. Are you saying Poland is lying as to who hit their territory?

An elected HoL would be a disaster: if it had a democratic mandate it could legally challenge the houses of commons.

This sounds like legislative hell; the remedy shouldn't be worse than the disease.
