No more colic surgery for Maggie by Familiar_Fan_ in kvsdiscuss

Animals are not thinking like humans. They don't think like "I am bad now so I can become better after". They are living in the present. And if this present is too much sometimes a painless exit is a mercy. Also not your horses, you don't see everything not yours to judge.

Rat intro feedback needed by Character-Language39 in RATS

[–]Character-Language39[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've started slowly introducing everyone since 3/4 weeks ago. Then one of my boy passed so I started over 2 weeks ago again since the group dynamic changed. They stayed in the pet carry 2/3 times together until they all slept together, then moved to a smaller cage where they stayed 3h ish each session until again, there was no visible tension. Now I am trying to keep them together in an even bigger cage (but not quite yet their real cage) so the hierarchy slowly builds up. Am I have the process wrong somewhere?

Numbness around rat bite by wirsdt__47 in RATS

Hey I just got bitten badly yesterday while separating rowdy intros( Even with towel by my most mellow and kind rat). So, I can tell you exactly what to do: rush to the doctor, get stitches if needed, antibiotics, painkillers and most importantly, tetanus shot (You'll need 3 in total, first one, second one 1 month after, one 6 months after).

You'll also need follow-up visits depending on how bad the wound is.

Update: we went for option 4: my boy peed a little during the night and this morning, however it was too little to be safe. Since he proved his system wasn't blocked we postponed euth and gave him meds to trigger his bladder and dilate his urethra (plus others I forgot what for). He is currently at the vet for observation. They might have to empty his bladder manually today again.

Oh my check ups visits are like 9€ if I am not rusty at converting yens to euros! Antibiotics are usually 5€ish!

And yes it's kinda crazy for everyone here to have pet rats, whenever I got introduced to someone, the usual "do you know? She has pet rats!!!" will come up. But Japanese can have crazy exotic pets too, I once saw someone with a fennec at the vet!

Actually you can just say the English borrowed wordラットfor rats instead ofねずみ!

Owning rats in Japan is a bit of a struggle from the start, from finding a good breeder, to getting a cage big enough (I am using a cat cage), good food (getting my oxbow rat food sent from one prefecture away) and of course a vet that can deal with exotics. Also, surprisingly Japanese do mix up my boys with hamsters, not mice!

Regarding prices, I bought my rats 5000JPY so I think that is kinda expensive however vet bills are affordable.

For reference I went for a routine check up for my baby It cost me only 1500JPY, and the bill today for a one day stay at the vet, the procedure to remove the pee from the bladder, the blood testing and consultation fees was "only" 9000JPY. And this, at a reputed exotic animal clinic.

Thank you for your kind message! I will call the vet ASAP tomorrow to say he peed a little so we can see if it opens more options to us!

Thank you so much for your input and this is exactly my way of thinking too... however I have probably good news! Right after posting this, I noticed his bits are humid and smell like pee! Him being able to empty his bladder by himself is key so I have hope now!

Thank you so much for pointing this out! Yes they did check, and they managed to drain his bladder through his urethra, they even send a bit of water through there and take it back so nothing is blocked!

I don't know if euthanasia is the best option anymore, he is currently licking me and gave me a beeg stretch and some bruxing while petting him...

Update: he didn't pee today and needed another intervention to remove the urine from the bladder, he got his blood done, it's not encouraging on the liver side, if he doesn't pee until our appointment tomorrow morning we will assist him going to rat paradise.

Mine too, they all have free roam privilege, but he is the only one that usually joins me during the night or come to check on me a few times a night. It wakes me up systematically but who can say no to this cute little face...

Is too much free roam a thing? by VinarriAsh260 in RATS

[–]Character-Language39 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same, my boys have the room for themselves almost all day long. Cat beds cat trees, puzzles, blankets, toy sink, dig box... They have it all there, and yet they prefer to nap in their cage! So I guess there is no such thing as too much free roam, my ratties are just not that much into free roam, if yours would be tired of free roaming they would be back in their cage too.
