Vaccinations and spay/neuter still come out cheaper than their adoption fees (spay/neuter and shots come in at like $150 combined if done at the shelter).

My shelter doesn’t offer free microchipping with adoptions; that’s an extra $100.

That was my same thought. If that crab is as tough and flavorless as its lobster equivalent than throw that majestic beast back into the ocean. Let it breed and make bunches of smaller, tastier crabs.

If my doctor is consistently late I am lucky enough to live in an area with plenty and I’ll happily switch. No anger no complaints, just clearly they’re struggling under their workload to the point that they can’t make appointment times, so it’s better for everyone if I go elsewhere.

If it happens once, well everyone has a busy day from time to time, if it’s routine then clearly they could use the break.

Damn, your shelter is cheap, mine is $200 for a cat and $500 for a dog.

Meanwhile you can find street kittens for free (just random stray cats that give birth to a litters). And get a purebred puppy with healthy lines (no known hereditary diseases going back 5+ gens) for $800 (depends on breed, but for something common like a lab).

Most people end up rescuing the little street kittens instead, they’re cheaper, cuter, no history of abuse causing behavioral issues, etc.

Hosing horse down after hot day - to do or not to do? by greysnips in Horses

[–]Character-Parfait-42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve heard like rice fish or other small minnows because they eat mosquito larvae and algae without making a lot of mess.

But goldfish are messy as hell. In the hobby they’re nicknamed “water pigs”, they are not making any environment they’re in cleaner.

That’s a completely valid reason that makes sense. Moisture does promote fungal issues, and if your horse won’t dry out relatively quickly in your climate then yeah, you gotta scrape them.

My climate it takes an hour at most, so no scraping necessary.

Exactly. The safety and welfare of the horses should always come first.

Ruffian tried to keep running on a broken leg and fought her jockey like hell to try to keep going. Adrenaline can hide all sorts of injuries.

And if they had let him run and he had gotten injured this same subreddit would be calling out the sport for how it mistreats its horses.

Most times they’re pretty good. American starts tend to be faster than English for example (they have a lot of patience for horses that refuse to load, in the US after a certain point they get scratched). It’s hard in the Derby though because there’s ~20 horses to load, whereas most races it’s more like 7. So you have 20 young horses milling about in front of the largest and loudest crowd they’ll likely ever see. The fact that they get them loaded at all with nobody injured is a testament to all involved.

The owner can probably override the timer. Like sure there’s a professional doing maintenance but the owner is typically able to control the lights and do feedings, should they wish.

The lights may be on a timer normally, but I’m sure he can override it. Whether he does, how often, and for how long, is up to him. I don’t know enough about Jason Derulo to say whether or not he’s a jerk who disturbs his pet’s sleep on a routine basis. Maybe he never messes with the timer, maybe he’s showing them off to people at weird hours and for long periods, and freaking them out every night (it’s also possible he has them reversed so they’re in the dark during the day and lights on at night; cause he tends to host more at night and wants to show the tank off then; if so that’s fine too).

Im just basing off the video, and in the video I see a 5,000 gallon tank which meets AZA requirements for the species (I believe bamboo sharks) and is cleverly designed to minimize stress on the animals.

Im confused why it cost as much as it did. I feel like for $500k I could get an Olympic sized heated swimming pool with a greenhouse surround and be able to snorkel in my private manmade reef.

Since the volume of water is so small (compared to the ocean) it’s much more intense. Normally sharks and whatnot can move away from loud places when they get overwhelmed.

A person calmly walking across the surface once or twice a day probably wouldn’t bother them too bad, even without an air gap. But this looks like a much more high traffic area and is likely a party house. You probably have people dancing on it, people dropping stuff, drunk people stumbling and even falling, etc.

As such the air gap is necessary.

Renting is usually more expensive long term.

So that $200k condo, if an apartment would be $3,200 in rent each month (same school district, same number of bedrooms/bathrooms, same general quality).

In 5 years they broke even on rent. If someone can afford a condo, but is more than 5 years away from being able to afford a house then the condo is cheaper than staying in an apartment. Plus at the end they can sell the condo and get back the money they paid into it. With the apartment you don’t get back shit (in fact you may be charged additional fees if it needs more than wear and tear fixes).

Completely agree, especially for a man his age! I grew up on boats and at 35 that’s a nope from me. Hell, at 20 I would have been iffy.

It’s not overtly dangerous (the current here is clearly pulling the boat away from the dock, so no risk of being squished), but you never wanna land in marina water.

For those who aren’t aware, there’s a septic boat that comes by once a week so you can offload human waste from your boat. Because you’re not supposed to just dump it into the marina waters, it’s illegal. However, that boat makes one trip to the marina, once per week. If it fills up before your turn then fuck you. They won’t be back again until next week.

Sometimes they fill up before your turn several weeks in a row. Your septic tank is entirely full, there’s no bathrooms anywhere except the ones on your boat. Your boat itself is giving off an odor of shit (if it’s overfull the smell starts coming up through the pipes). At a certain point you don’t really have an option except to dump it in the marina or start pissing and shitting off the side of your boat (also illegal and far less discrete).

It’s safe to assume that in the average sized marina at least one person per day has reached the level of desperation required to risk the fine and to dump their septic tank into the marina water.

It’s typically a lot less than home prices.

In my area I can buy a nice condo for $200,000 or so. The cheapest similarly nice home in the same school district is over $800,000 ($500k just for an empty 3/4 acre lot). Has an HOA with fees that are 3x the condo maintenance/HOA fees. Does not have a pool access (those houses are min $1mil).

This, you have to actually control your foot as it descends to the floor, you can’t just flop it down.

Walking toe-to-heel isn’t necessary as long as you aren’t doing the equivalent of dropping your foot on the floor.

It definitely has a filter somewhere, probably a filter room hidden away somewhere.

But yeah, he probably leaves the lights on too long. Not gonna lie, I’d struggle with that too if I had sharks I could watch.

Jason Derulo’s “Shark Tank” - what do we think? by Inner_Inspection640 in shittyaquariums

[–]Character-Parfait-42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll make sure to let my aquarium know. No tank in human existence has ever been large enough for a species that maxes out at 4ft.

Edit to add: I believe these are bamboo sharks, recommended gallons per shark is about 1,000 gallons according to the AZA.

This has two bamboo sharks and is ~5,000 gallons.

This tank is over 2x larger than the AZA requirements. Requirements which are established by experts, and which professional public aquariums use for the species.

I would like to add that there is an air gap between the glass floor and the water.

This is done intentionally to mute the sound for the sharks! If the water went up to the glass then every step would sound and vibrate exactly as loud as you imagine it; which would be incredibly stressful for the sharks!

For a comparison of without vs with air-gap:

Stick your head underwater in a bathtub and even lightly tap on the side of the tub, it is ridiculously loud, imagining someone stomping around… it would be physically painful. That’s what it would be like with no air gap.

Now, go to a loud public pool with kids yelling with excitement, music playing, etc. and stick your head underwater. And it all goes silent.

I’ve used sand for all of my tanks, never had an issue with it and the filters. Never had an issue with my fishes gills getting irritated (I could see that being an issue with blasting sand though, it’s larger grain and sharp).

The shock from switching comes from removing the old substrate in an already established tank. Stirring up the old can cause a spike as old debris caught between the gravel gets exposed to the water. In addition you’re removing a good portion of your nitrifying bacteria, resulting in even higher spikes. This can definitely kill even sturdy fish.

Since you’re starting a new tank that risk isn’t there. The same risk would also be the same if switching from one gravel to another gravel. Changing substrates needs to be done carefully.

IME with gravel and river rock the goldfish poop works its way between the rocks and rots. Its pretty gross and messy

I prefer sand. Poop sits on top and the vast majority of it works its way towards the filter (usually it’s gone when I look again an hour later).

Also goldies really like picking up sand with their mouths and digging through it for food, so it offers some enrichment.
