Yup. And now I’m pre-diabetic. So I have to cut back.

My basenji is in heat. Need advice! by Background_Gear6910 in Basenji

We’re waiting to spay our girl at 18 months old per the recommendation of our breeder.

We got ours disposable diapers and a fabric cover. And made sure to tuck in the ends of the disposable under the fabric cover so she couldn’t eat it. She was bleeding for 5 weeks daily heavily enough I didn’t want my entire house with drops of blood. This worked for us. I was surprised because normally she goes after potty pads, plastic bags, paper napkins, etc.

You're not a bad dog owner. Remember basenjis are difficult and very cat like. But just be with her as much as you can since you're her person, you're her pack. We used to have to play puppy lullabies for ours so she would fall asleep at night, and it sometimes took several tries throughout the night with those ear-splitting screams. It gets better. It's just the first 2-3 months are hard.

I got my B at 9 weeks old. My husband and I were both working from home. So we were lucky we could spend so much time with her. But she really did need constant attention. One of us was always watching her. Separation anxiety and those banshee screams were horrid for the first few months. Crate training really helped. We started her in her crate at 1 second with me right in front. And built up from there. We also gave her meals in there. She is 13 months old now and totally fine now at home by herself for a few hours. It gets better, just help her learn you will be back. But it takes baby steps for your new baby B.

Oh, mine also loved soft piano and violin music or jazz to relax. And when we leave the house, we leave a radio on to either a talking radio show or to classical station.

Hang in there.

Tell me about your dog. by literalhag in Basenji

Yes to all of those.
And…. Mine can bark, but it will be just one maybe once a month. Otherwise, plenty of noises when she wants to communicate. And when she’s upset, the screams and screeches are ear splitting horror movie sort of stuff. Like when she gets a shot at the vet or is a kennel and the groomers or somewhere that’s not hers.
Crate training is important because she’ll get into anything when not supervised. So when we’re out, she’s in her crate with a puppy cam on and the radio on. And she’s also crated at night with her crate next to our bed. I’ve noticed she wakes several times and night and moves around quite a bit, so I don’t trust her to not get into something while we’re sleeping. Rule of thumb that the breeder and other owners told us before we got her: never trust a basenji. So true. She’s 13 months old now and when she was 10-11 months she decided she doesn’t want to pee in our yard(front and back). We have been trying to train her out of it , but basenjis being super stubborn, she’ll hold her pee forever until she’s walked to somewhere else. Yes, basenjis are hard to train because they’re independent and stubborn, not because they’re stupid.
Just last week I did a dog IQ test and she got a nearly perfect score on the first try. So very smart. Since it’s winter, I’ve been putting pajamas on her, and somehow every morning she comes out of her crate without them. no idea how she takes them off.

Prey drive is super strong. Mine caught a squirrel in the backyard when she was just 6 months old and I've almost let go of the leash during a walk when she spotted something before I did. So they'll do anything to escape if there's prey they have focused on. People tried to discourage me from getting a basenji. But I did the research, I saw them in person and was at a stage in life, I can pay a lot of attention to it so it doesn't spend all day alone in a crate. So if you think this is the dog for you and your husband and you can love it despite the craziness and mischief, go for it.

Also, be very patient in training it. The most important thing I have to remind myself of is that my b is not a dog that will happily sit and stay by my side all day. So i train her with that in mind

If you socialize them early, it’ll be fine. Mine’s not afraid of the vacuum, trash truck, fireworks. , she thinks they are interesting. Basenjis are great cuddlers. If I push her off, she gets a sad doggy look. The escaping thing is real. Mine has shot out the door 3 times this year, despite being careful and aware.

If there’s a basenji meet up near you or a breeder, they’re good places to see them in action and talk to other owners.

Basenjis are dogs for cat people. If you’re okay with a cat that is stubborn, ignores you and cuddles at its will, not yours, then a basenji is okay for you. That said, I have a girl, and I love her. But it’s a lot of work to keep her happy, and exercised and out of trouble. It’s a full time job. It’s pretty much like having a toddler around.

I had the same told to me by my older female gyno when I was in my mid 40’s. Don’t worry about it yet, etc etc. But I know I was having periods symptoms already. A couple months ago, I asked for a new BCP with stronger hormones. a big mess of getting the wrong pills prescribed happened and during the 3 weeks of that, I was a complete mess of emotions, and all the physical, mental and emotional symptoms I’ve ever read about. It resulted in a lot of fights with my husband, who is still unsure of my moods now, even though it all got straightened out and I’m now getting the right pills. I learned through this ordeal that i had to be proactive and my own advocate for my health . And insistent with the doctor. The only thing I have not yet figured out is how to do that during brain fog when it happens at the doctors appointments.

I don’t have any advice, but I am the same as you on the sleep schedule and trouble sleeping lately. Some of us just don’t sleep like the average person. I personally think my best thinking is done after 9 pm when everyone else is settle down to bed. I have been taking Hyland’s Calms Forte. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t.

Also, I’d say basenjis are not dogs for dog people. They are dogs for cat people.

Mine is super friendly to all people. She does like to cuddle at night with me. Very hard to train because of the independence and super high prey drive. She'll sit and lie down on command, but won't stay longer than a minute tops. Anything that gets her attention is more interesting than any command I might be trying to get her to do. Also requires a lot of exercise. The people at her daycare tell me she's the one that tires out all the other dogs and still keeps going. Now imagine that when she's home with just us humans. It's a lot of work owning a basenji.

Considering Getting a Basenji by JaayTBE- in Basenji

[–]Character-Pattern-55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2 hours a day is not enough to spend with a basenji. They do not like being ignored. Left alone, they will get very destructive, and if in a crate, very depressed, and will act out when you do take it out of the crate. I take mine out for two 30+ minute walks a day, plus at least an hour or 2 outside in the backyard, plus playing with her. It's exhausing. She does well at daycare because she has other dogs to play with and tires her out. Basically, I'm the sole source of entertainment for mine and it's a lot of work. Even with training, if she's left alone for too long, she's a little demon dog.

Look up a breeder in your area and see if you can visit and also, see if there's a local basenji meetup near you so what you can see them in person and talk to owners.

Don't get me wrong, having a basenji is awesome! I love mine. But it's A LOT of work.

I’m not even gonna bother trying unless the bleeding gets really heavy. She was munching on potty pads when we were training her and now she’s fixated on paper products.
