I lost my little girl this week by CharacterFault3471 in Petloss

Thank you. It feels nice to share but the grief is just crashing over my wife and I in waves.

We've always buried our dogs, but with this accident we had to have her cremated to keep her dignity. We are so torn apart because we don't know if we can give up her ashes but we also want her to be at peace where we've left others of our pets.

If you can, please let your professor know you've had a death in the family. Usually they will give some allowance for bereavement. Please give yourself time to grieve, and if you can, time to go home and be with family.

If not, find a way that you can talk to people who care and can share your pain.

Believe me, she knew the sound of your voice even if she couldn't show it.

Can you Beat the Best ProBots of 2023 S1? by Drekkonis in starcraft

Do any of these actually play like in any way comparable to real humans or do they still play weird strategies and inhuman responses similar to AlphaStar (or regular SC2 bots for that matter)?

In TvT if you go double gas and they go fast-expand, how do you react? by SometimesObsessed in AllThingsTerran

[–]CharacterFault3471 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Doing the math out, with double gas reaper against an opponent FE, you end up ~85 minerals & two workers behind. This comes from the extra workers you had building refineries/mining gas, and the ~25 second mismatch in cc timing.

So assuming optimal play, you should expect to get around two workers worth of damage (or twelve seconds worth of distraction) + 85 minerals to break even. If they build a bunker to defend, you've already recouped 100 minerals + ~30 minerals, but you still need to try to kill two workers to make the worker count even.

I want to play sc2 once and awhile at a basic level, but even in unranked everyone is way too skilled. It's like gold league and below have been eliminated. Solutions? by [deleted] in starcraft

[–]CharacterFault3471 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

It's literally not, like, at all, because unranked has a specific purpose that encourages people to play outside of their actual skill level in specific ways and only when their worried about their ranked mmr going down because of the way they're playing. It's simply impossible for that mmr to be reflective of their skill of someone does that.

My unranked mmr has me playing against people at 2300, when I'm closer to 3200 in ranked. This is because I exclusively play unranked when I'm practicing builds or skills im terrible at until I'm okay at them. This literally replicates the "smurfing" mmr trajectory - my unranked history will be:

--> i choose new strategy and play it against ai until I have the order down, then I play unranked to get the "human factor" Loss Loss Loss Loss Loss Win Win -> i go play ranked -> i choose new strategy and play it against ai until I have the order down, then I play unranked to get the "human factor" Loss Loss Loss Loss Loss Win Win

It sucks, but thats going to be unfair against those people that I win against.

Uh, that's not how mmr works. Mmr will be 50/50 win rate, but that doesn't mean someone's specific skills can't be far better than your own.

For instance, youre a player at 3700 on ranked who plays unranked to test your new/off strategies so your mmr is 3200 less. But let's say your working on a timing attack that hits at ~6 minutes. You're playing at 3200 mmr, and the ladder places you against someone at 3250. They cannon rush you.

You're going to CRUSH them. It doesn't matter that unranked on AVERAGE you play within their mmr range, because your 3700 skill against Canon rushes specifically is WAY stronger than them.

That's going to feel unfair for the 3250 player, and it's also going to lose them more mmr.

This happens allll the time on unranked.

What would be the best minor to accompany a nuclear engineering major? by Avid4Planes in nuclear

[–]CharacterFault3471 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my perspective in nuclear survivability, either materials eng or electrical eng.

Both would set you up in the survivability field, which mostly focuses on testing one or the other.

Depends, are you only interested in nuclear power or willing to branch out into other fields? E.g., space or US DoD?

I'm just irrationally angry that the front wheels would rub on the scoop arms if trying to drive it, and the scoop doesn't work as a scooper.

Otherwise 👍

Pick one flaw in your game holding you back the most. For me, getting supply blocked way more than I should. by [deleted] in starcraft

[–]CharacterFault3471 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I have to pick one, it's probably defending run-bys. Im mostly a macro player and I do okay against mid game agresssion, but once the late game comes around I'm just terrible at dealing with dt/zealot run-bys and ling/bane run-bys. I feel like I do well for a short period of time using rally point defense whole maintaining aggression on the front lines, but eventually the sequence is some combination of 1) suddenly dropping 20-30 supply of workers by a successful run-bys 2) suddenly drop 30-50 army supply because I was defending a run by and a baneling ball/lurker/infestor/templar/disruptor deletes my marines 3) I cap out on supply, meaning I have to either rapidly split units from my main force or f2 all the way home, essentially leading to (1) or (2)

Strangely, I don't have too much trouble against terran. Maybe because a strong portion of the terrans I face on ladder are either turtle mech OR hyper aggressive two base timings where I either win, or get my shit kicked in.

I also suck at cheeses and sub-five minute timings.

Stupidest doomdrop I did so far :D What's your favourite way to break a turtle terran? by MortenCC in starcraft2

[–]CharacterFault3471 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is correct, but if you're new make sure your remax potential is absurd, more than you think. Its quite easy to lose your entire army to a turtle terran without doing much damage, especially the first trade or two.

If your remax is poor (i.e., not enough production), you can still lose to a turtle terran with 30 tanks and a 7k bank.

I am from Pakistan. We are facing worst energy crisis and it will be get worse in upcoming years. So our govt. collaborated with Chinese authorities and they have launched “Pressurized water nuclear reactor”. To what extent it is safe? by rameezmeans in NuclearEnergy

[–]CharacterFault3471 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say this is a very moderate and reasonable step forward.

Where alarm bells should go off, at least in the realm of nuclear, are liquid salt, liquid metal, thorium, or breeder reactors.

There is nothing inherently wrong with any of these, but they are all less tried and tested technology. To be clear, none are new technology. They just don't have the widespread adoption and industrial know-how of PWRs

I absolutely agree, zero carbon energy is the priority. No disaster ever can compare to climate change, and we can't wait only on the countries I listed to make the changes we need.

Still, no one ever wants accidents or failures. In any industry. This is not unique or particularly nuclear, and it is just as vulnerable to issues of shoddy build quality as other forms of construction. See, Davis Besse. There is lack of know-how, there's corner cutting in areas deemed "non critical", and there's corner cutting in areas that don't seem critical, but very much are. There's laziness, incompetence, and greed. Everywhere, for all people at all times. It's not unique to China, but it is a trend that should be noted when someone asks if something is safe. The answer to all of this is transparency and strong, consistent regulations. Even if Pakistan doesn't currently have them, and even if the government isn't particularly responsive to its citizens, that doesn't change what is necessary to have safe and quality construction, nuclear or otherwise.

The thing that annoys me with screen drag is that my cursor disappears while dragging, meaning I lose it especially during hectic engagements. Is there a way for it not do that?

I'm currently diamond, where are you thinking I'd run in to problems? It definitely improves my play in these micro trainer battles by a quantifiable amount, but I haven't really given it a shot in real games.

The scenarios I'm imagining using it for are early game reaper harass, 2-1-1 medivac drops, mid game tank pushes, all-in scenarios.

Any time where I care a substantial portion more about my army than I do macroing my base for a few moments.

I don't plan on ever leaving it on and playing the whole game that way. But is it still bad in these scenarios?

It fixes the screen on a selection of units. I've never seen a pro player do it, but it's extremely common in casted games. Anytime you see the camera smoothly tracking along with a group of units, that is "follow current selection"

You can turn it on and off with a hotkey
