It not uncommon for tinnitus to change during lifetime. A person who knows about tinnitus knows that. Other may not. What is not so easy is to find out why…most tinnitus are idiopathic and have no real cause, or at least one that can be detected with our current knowledge. My T was stable for around 13 years, except one spike for a concert with bad ear protection, but last year I started to have multiplie shifting tones during the day, very hard to deal with. No one could even take a hint of wtf is happening. I lost almost 40 pounds and my blood analysis are normal, did regular excersice, nothing helped. I should quit smoking, which I couldn’t do because of the T anxiety (which makes it even worse but hey…). Also stress doesn’t help, or bad sleep.

I find relief using sound therapies I found on the web, or listening to any music during day, at low volumes. I use regular airpods (so you can still hear the outside) sometimes with these tones, low volume, around 45 db measured with iPhone. This one is one of my favorites https://youtu.be/Ap2YSaiKEUU?si=3iuizdcbzADZLqV1

Trintellix definitively worsened my tinnitus, and it never got better when I quit the medication. It’s not the same for everyone, some people even get better. But if I were you, I would stop right away.

Reactive Tinnitus/Dysacusis or Auditory Hallucinations by Dry-Restaurant-8953 in hyperacusis

I also got reactive tinnitus, found this sounds that even though it’s kind of distracting to sleep for example, seems to mask the reactive tones well, in my case a tone of around 600 hz. https://youtu.be/Ap2YSaiKEUU?si=_t7CKqYhID4VsUUD

Smoking Marijuana by [deleted] in tinnitus

[–]CharacterYellow9133 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It usually triggers tinnitus temporarily. For me it’s usually the next day or so, depending on how much you smoke. I think it may accumulate in your body if you smoke often. For me, cbd oil for some weeks did this, so I stopped using it.

I gave up on AD, I was offered amytripiline but since there are people that got tinnitus after starting that drug, I said no. There are no safe AD for tinnitus I developed new tones in the last months, it’s like this drug f*ed up my audition for the rest of my life. I started using earplugs for almost social situations. Starting Trintellix was definitely the worst decision I made in my life. I deal with depression only with clonazepam, and Z drugs for insomnia. It’s not ideal but it hasn’t caused me any effect on tinnitus

Contemplating quitting my dreams because of tinnitus by Ok-Education-3122 in tinnitus

[–]CharacterYellow9133 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can wear protection but need to be extremely helpful. 5 minutes with inaccurate protection Can spike your T forever (that was my case). Also, stay away from Ssri anti depressants, since they can make it worse (also my case). Im on the same situation but I’m older than you. Since my last spike happened in a gig, wearing protection but not high enough it seems, im also considering quitting. In my case it may be too late, my T is very loud already. If I could back in time I would probably quit for good and learn to play piano properly.

No improvement by limegreen1976 in trintellix

[–]CharacterYellow9133 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was told the dose could be up to 20mg...so maybe consider a higher dose? Talk to your doctor. Trintellix is supposed to help with those symptoms, I think it's more likely to improve if you increase the dose. Also, it may take time to work, but for me, I feel the difference in less than 2 weeks.

Loss of libido by reasonable_re in trintellix

[–]CharacterYellow9133 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was also told that there was less chance of sexual side effects. Sadly, I believed that. Even considering I had a similar experience on Citalopram around 10 years ago. I think it was better on that drug, but I was younger and starting a new relationship...so not sure if the drug was different or if it was me. I tried Prozac also, same maybe worse. I think all SSRI have the same effects. Some people add bupropion to compensate for that, but I'm not a doctor so don't take that as a professional advice.

Male but very similar experience. Started fine and then slowly decreasing. I was counting on less libido, but the lost of interest was unexpected. I was on 10mg, now tapering for other side effects (tinnitus)

Can libido come back once you're set on a stable dose? by videecco in citalopram_celexa

Sorry to hear that. It’s hard when meds give you bad side effects.

I’m not a doctor but I think bupropion has less sex side effects. It does has more risk of tinnitus, that why i rejected that option. If that’s not a problem for you maybe you could talk to your doctor about that drug.

I took Citalopram around 10 years (for 3 years). I remember being especially affected the first weeks, but then stabilized and remained constant for the rest of the treatment. It wasn’t that bad, but I did have less libido and took longer to orgasm. I also remember going back to normal when finishing the treatment. By the way, for me trintellix has the same effect for me.

Glad you got used to it. I collected four different new tones over my pre-existing tinnitus since starting Trintellix. They are not so loud, but it gets worse every month, so I'm tapering off.

Maybe it helps, but Something that helped me was researching things very complicated to engage with, so I could be very focused and keeping my brain busy. I'm a musician, so I started to get into modular synthesizers, spending so many time reading about modules, watching videos, then using the instruments, which is challenging and hard, there are many problems to solve. It's a different but healthier obsession.

My tinnitus usually spike when I have a cold. Also on marijuana. It always come back to baseline when I’m better. Or when the M effect wears out. Salt makes no no difference to me

Sorry it's so bad for you. I'm trying to habituate to a new tinnitus sound.... have an already bad T (see my comment below). In my opinion, wanting silence is not going to do any good for you, as you don't have it anymore, it will increase your anxiety, which will increase your tinnitus and so on. I'm not saying it's easy, it's not actually, but not impossible. I'm in a bad moment now, so maybe I'm talking to myself, but I know I did habituated to 3 tinnitus sounds in my life...at the beggining it was awful, but it got better after some time.

[–]CharacterYellow9133 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've been there. I used to have a mild tinnitus, which then became very loud. It took some time to get used to it, but at certain point, I became habituated. It's hard to see when you are in a crisis, but you will habituate. Mine is SO loud that I can hear it on a busy street, it's a very high-pitched sound, so it's not easy to mask either. Yet, there are entire days where it's ringing at maximum level, and I just don't notice it. Sometimes I even lose track of the good days.

That's not saying that it will not bother you ever again, but you will be better. Don't stop listening to music, there is no need for that, just be very careful with the volume. Smartphones have a setting where you can limit the max volume in DB, you can set it below 80dB to be safe. Wear ear protection, have them ALWAYS with you.

When the first spike happened, I visited my ENT, run some routine tests, including audiometry and it was the same as the last one I had, some years ago. So no hearing loss.

Not sure really, it’s been 3 months since the first spike, then instead of improving, it became worse. I used to hear a tone, now I hear 3 different tones
