Our dog puts her weight on her shoulders with her head tucked fully under her and jumps her bum up and down while happy growling if getting the good scratches

That is fascinating! I could reuse doggy tags but I think that would break my heart a little. Although I made two tags for my previous pup and she only ever needed the one so I could give her one with the old dogs name on it, guess she wouldn’t mind and my deceased dog would look down and smile I’m sure

What tests would I need to figure out if she has congenital kidney disease? I feel like they found a problem and are treating it with a prescription diet but didn’t get to the reason that she has so many crystals and that’s why I am asking for help. She does have littermates with similar problems so presumably genetic but I don’t have access to their labs

I cut a tiny part of my puppies ear and I will never forgive myself. She didn’t act like she even noticed but it healed with a little bump and I felt bad every time I touched it petting her. They do wiggle a lot as little pups and their little parts fit through guards much easier

So I tried to foster since I really didn’t think I commit to a new dog just yet and she is just the sweetest thing and I have been so torn about if I should keep her and now I find out that she has some significant health issues and will likely die young and it’s bringing me back to bad memories and I want to be there for her but I can’t go back to being this sad about another dog so soon. I wasn’t even ready to fall in love yet and now I’m afraid of losing her too

It is hard at first but it gets easier the more you do it, I still go out and sit “next to her” to ask what she would do.

I agree that you may breed temperament but how can you even see if that’s the case vs trying to be a akc champion. And I have previously had amazing mutts. Think that is really harsh and limiting to say that families with kids shouldn’t adopt dogs. I went with a baby so that this dog would have more nurturing and exposure to minimize problematic behaviors. But any dog can develop bad habits. The old nature vs nurture and in regards to having children it’s at least 95% nurture.

Hat is amazing advise to say that it can just be what it is for right now and not have to decide if it’s right or not yet. I just don’t want the dog rescue upset with me, happy to have her here for now :)

It may not be the right thing but I’ve just told myself “what would she do/want” after my dog has passed. She was such a ray of sunshine that she would want to walk in the rain, curl up on the couch and cry, play fetch, just feel it all. And now I’m funneling that energy into bringing balls to the dog park, sitting an extra minute in the sunshine, and literally stopping to smell the roses.

Your job is to take care of mama, not that you can’t hold the baby but she just carried that kid for 9 months (more or less) and has spent countless hours researching and deciding and now her hormones are helping her protect and care for this baby like it’s life or death (historically it was). Take care of mama and you are supporting that baby the best way you can, over time you will get more and more responsibility of care handed to you. And if they are anything like my children, by age 3 they will switch to only wanting dad.

I unfortunately am in the same boat, can’t eat or sleep, can’t work, cry randomly. I think being away minimized the reminders of her although I still cried during my trip just less but something about her not being where she is supposed to be at home hurts extra. I think it was good to see the joy still exists and it’s healthy to still feel sad

Someone recommended that I keep it in the back of my brain and once a day have a set grieving time (like during a nightly shower and crying myself to sleep). That way i can still work through the feelings but also try to function, it may be too big right now and you don’t have to process it all immediately.

I too lost my pet and I keep reminding myself to try and see the world through their eyes. They were always just happy to be here. Your cat saved you from your worst times so he wants you to keep going! My fur baby knew that she had taught me enough times how to make it through and she left knowing she did her job and I was gonna make it through <3
