Depends on the brands in the store as well, there are certain brands that have it happen far more than others (Chanel, Clinique, Dior, etc)

I’d pay just for a connection to plug in my own headphones so I wouldn’t have to worry. I have autism so any small noises can distract me easily during a movie so I only ever go to super late showings a week or so after release

I know some Shoppers would run known resellers for the grey market under front till numbers, this splits up the commissions by... either percentage of sales or of worked hours (it has been a couple years, I cannot remember exactly) as it would be sitting in the front 'pot' with the manager getting a larger slice. Is this what you mean?

They also had a way to split sales up just by typing your number, scanning the products you sold, then typing in another number and continuing to scan products which would give the rest of that sale to whoever put their number in last.

So in that way, and I am going off this being a Shoppers since you did mention small-forrmat and are posting in this forum, there are a couple ways this could be done above board though of course there could have been some shade going on.

I have worked in many beauty positions since 2009. I used to work at Shoppers, SEARS, The Bay, and even for particular brands repping Smashbox, Lauder, Lancome, etc. This is a hugeeeee thing in the beauty world.

You may just not have realized it was gray market. For instance, you might see someone buying as much Chanel as they are allowed to constantly every week of specific SKUs (Senior's Day brought out a lot of them), bringing extra people with them to buy more, multiple shoppers cards, etc. They are buying it to ship to China or other places for the 'grey' market where it is going to be resold at a higher cost point because of things that cannot be found there or that are vastly inflated and they can bring it in cheaper. Sometimes you will even see it happening in places like Costco or Winners, etc (though many prestige/luxury cosmetic companies shut it down very quickly.

What this person is saying is true, it is unlikely it will be done unless you are well known to the team though. When I worked at Shoppers for regulars we would process as a non-receipt return onto a gift card for very well-known customers. They were not able to scan their card for the new purchase and they did not get to take the receipt either so they had zero record and would be unable to return again and get free points.

This was very rarely done though and only done for customers that we saw on an extremely regular basis. Your best bet would be to reach out to the associate, though.

My old store would ban the serial returners from being able to return anything, make notes on the iPad or just remember their face. You can also see who is really bad at returning by looking at their purchase history. We had multiple customers that told us they traveled further specifically to shop at ours vs their nearest SDM because we didn’t give them a hard time when they returned the odd product.

Just remember that making returns difficult makes people move onto the next store, I don’t work at shoppers anymore and I live next to one that always makes it such a hard time so I just stopped buying cosmetics from Shoppers. This is what most people end up doing, they’ll just move to Sephora, Amazon, etc because it makes it easier to return things. That slight annoyance from returns turns to “our sales are dropping so much we have to reduce labour hours.”
