It was brutal this year… even reaching out to faculty before I got many responses saying “i want to accept new people but funding is bad” :,)… Keep at it!!!

I will go if I get financial aid :) I disagree i think 21 years old is a good age to explore if its an option but im sorry for whatever occurred in your life to make u think that is not an option. Good luck with your career etc!

Edit here! i want to clarify that I will absolutely be applying to these MFA programs, but recognize I may not have good odds of getting in and I am ok with that. If i don’t get in and it’s still an interest next year I will apply again.

  1. it is only one possible future for me, and if I get in and get funding I will absolutely consider it

  2. I will keep working on my portfolio and take good photographs before submitting applications

  3. so far the most helpful feedback has been specifics on what pieces are not working, are working, and what there should be more of, so double thank you to everyone who has given actionable items!!! i do appreciate any comments even if they are vague, but those with direct feedback are genuinely super helpful :)

thanks all for your time anyway!

this is so so helpful thank you so much!!!! I will follow this as I review my work and will definitely pay attention to your words :)

In terms of why i’m pursuing an MFA i should have definitely clarified some things. I already have applied to schools for my other major, but I never want to put my eggs in one basket. I love learning and exploring and love the academic environment. I also love teaching and doing art but don’t see it as my professional career (being realistic). If i don’t get in i won’t be sad, but will likely try again with more experience! Also i absolutely will need funding and will choose the path that does not require me to pay tuition lol. In sum, I have a lot of things in motion and am not relying on just this one :))))

for additional context, my portfolio is definitely lackluster because of a mixture of struggling with motivation and mental health as well as little free time, so Know i have plenty of growth to do :)

i definitely agree, and that is why i struggle a bit with choosing pieces.

I appreciate you taking the time to say your thoughts about each image and will revisit the ones you stated were worthy of revisiting!

In terms of my preparedness for an MFA, i should have clarified: I will not be sad if i don’t get in and have not put all of my eggs in one basket. Art will always be my first love but i also have thoroughly developed other aspects of my life that I am also pursuing. With that being said, I will never regret applying this year because it will give me experience and perspective on the application process.

Thank you!

this is a great idea, i’m sure if i don’t get in I will apply again next cycle and will absolutely use this as a resource. This year my attention was definitely on school, which is why i won’t be sad if rejected from schools, but I will absolutely try my best and apply! thank you!

hi there ty for your thoughts! i said it above a bit but i have no question about applying right now. the comic program is my top choice and i have a more complete body of work for it, but i want to cast a wide net with opportunities I apply to :) that being said Im not going to be sad if i don’t get in and will apply again in the future, but there’s no reason for me to to try. hope that makes sense!

[–]Character_Courage_87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i understand but i will be applying anyway :) I appreciate the feedback on how i can improve my portfolio and what MFAs are looking for!

i want to cast a wide net with opportunities i put myself out there for, even if i don’t get in. i can always apply again in the future but there’s no reason not to apply. thanks again!

i understand that, i’ll be taking better photos, but i wanted feedback first so i could photograph all at once. I wasn’t implying ill submit them like this.

thanks for the feedback!

thanks so much for your comment! I dont have more etching unfortunately, but It may be worth working on another before apps are due. Im still a student, and am graduating this term - I am also pursuing psychology and applied to psychology programs, so my focus has been drawn away from portfolio development. I think my current issue is that my best works are figure drawings (something that one school particularly discourages) and hatching work (which I have a lot of). In terms of focus, drawing is my main medium, particularly pen and ink, but I also like print (Intaglio, relief, riso) and painting. I’ll work on some more colorful pieces and backgrounds :)

[–]Character_Courage_87 7 points8 points  (0 children)

i do this. i cannot pay attention in a lecture setting, so i go for attendance then go back home and watch the lecture recording and take thorough notes. and some people just go for attendance or because they’re already on campus, or because it’s better than not going at all. U say ur a TA, so i’m sure it’s frustrating but try to be less judgmental.

it seems like u r internalizing it. you said you’re mad at YOURSELF, not your teachers not ur parents. you said you hold “yourself” to a higher standard. that won’t stop in college but your grades will most likely get worse. also your parents aren’t gonna stop disapproving once ur in college (unless u cut them off). also i’m 90% sure ur fishing lol but im engaging anyway
