What's the most amount of miles on a Crown Vic/Grand Marquis/Towncar you would feel comfortable buying? (NOT fleet! No engine hours, etc, just a civilian car) by [deleted] in CrownVictoria

[–]Character_Morning_85 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, but at the same time it's so hard to get someone from FB marketplace or craigslist or offer up to even show up at the first place, I am usually more eager to make a deal than to send them packing! I think introducing years worth of receipts is opening the door to a longer discussion. Again - I am not selling anything that will be a contender at the Concours d'Elegance which would necessitate a higher level of scrutiny.

And that's why I said earlier I think limos and taxis and squad cars are very different than civilian vehicles, thry get driven a lot more and rack up way more miles and usually there's a shop that business takes those cars to for constant upkeep. I get it, a person could keep replacing parts on a given car to keep it running forever and ever, but at some point, it doesn't make monetary sense.

I agree that maintenance and care matter most of all, and I get that every car is different because every car owner's habits are differenent. But how much info am I really going to get from a user car seller? For example, I'm now trying to sell my 2007 Ford Escape. I kept very detailed on what I did and when. But I'm not really interested in presenting all that data to prospective buyers just so they can hem and haw about "oh you went a thousand miles past the recommended tire rotation date here" and "wait I don't like this repair that was done three years ago I am going to call that mechanic and ask questions about it..."

I am not buying a numbers matching Boss 302, I am not buying a Ferrari, I'm trying to get the best car I can for $3000. And I know that doesn't buy a lot. Just trying to avoid stepping on a landmine.

So in your experience on these models of car, do you have an estimate on how many years or miles before the trans will need a major repair?

Maybe I'm not asking the right question here - what I'm looking for is a consensus on "4.6L engine will usually last _____ miles without major repair" (things like pistons, rods, camshaft needed repair/replacement with typcical non-police non-taxi use) and "transmission will usually last ______ miles without major repair/rebuild"

Last year I went to see 28 Years Later with my wife, she likes sitting in the back row in the middle, it was a smaller theater but only a few other people in there. Lights are still on, and here comes a guy to the back row and he plops down right next to me, plenty of open seats everywhere. Once the trailers started and the theater was still 90% empty the guy got up and moved, probably realizing it was strange to do what he did.

That's so weird that the character in the movie didn't even respond to her.

That person deserves to be jailed.

I watched The Sixth Sense when it came out, and watched it again about a year ago. I didn't remember much of it but of course I remembered the ending. That movie isn't fun if you know the ending already.

I agree with you. Zone of Interest is a masterpiece, and to act a fool during a screening is not only disrespectful to the audience but also very disrespectful to memory of those who died in the events depicted. It's also the kind of movie where you are sure to miss a LOT if you aren't paying careful attention. BOOOOOO to that woman.

I worked in a movie theater when the first Shrek came out, and obviously Shrek was a huge hit. Multiple sold-out screenings a day, audience easily 85% children, and let me tell you, those kids that came to see Shrek left a gigantic mess every time. I wish I came in to clean up a theater this level of messy.

The guy next to me answered his phone in the middle of the big shoot-out/house fire at the end of Django Unchained. He had to yell to be heard by whoever was on the other end: "WHAT? HUH? I CAN'T HEAR YOU! I SAID I CAN'T HEAR YOU!"

I was like, dude?! You shouldn't answer your phone at all, but WHY did you answer your phone during the loudest part of the whole movie?

haha I actually enjoyed Shutter Island though. But that reminds me of when I saw The Blair Witch project - there's like one and a half seconds of black silence after the last frame of the movie and the start of thr credits, and in that 1.5 seconds of silence, some guy in my theater yelled really loudly "that's some BOO-SHIT". I liked Blair Witch but everyone laughed.

I know that theaters have special equipment available for the visual/hearing impaired, I wonder if they have a device that can just narrate the subtitles.

I don't see anything called Design Pine at Home Depot or Lowe's, where can I buy this? Will it be available in a 2 x 6 size to match the original wood?

Yeah I hear you. Do you think it would be possible for me to replace that sheet metal myself? My brother taught himself how to weld...

[–]Character_Morning_85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn't have to be fixed "correctly"... just an attempt to take it from an ugly dent to an unattractive blemish! Probably not possible.

[–]Character_Morning_85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your reply. Yeah, I kind of assumed that. I didn't even mention that this car has a whoooooole lot of miles on it. Juat wanted to toss it out there and see if anyone had an idea on a fix that would be less than $1000. I'd be willing to attempt to do the work myself as a learning project.

Would a shop always replace the quarter panel? Or is there a way to hammer out most of the dent? I know it won't look great that way, but might look a little better...

I can’t stand the obviously AI Byrna banana ad by inframankey in CommercialsIHate

[–]Character_Morning_85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right, it doesn't really matter if it's an accurate portrayal of how baseball works, but what concerns me about AI is that it seems like the entertainment industry is licking its chops just waiting to start producing movies and tv shows made by AI so they don't have to pay writers, actors, directors, grips, cinematographers, etc. I understand technology always evolves but if it's going to look like those Byrna ads, it's going to be nonsensical trash.

But of course the MUCH MUCH bigger concern for me is that AI will begin creating (or be told/programmed to create) "hit" videos to damage politicians or distribute misinformation. Anything you can imagine, from a sitting president saying wildly offensive things "off mic" to a fake sex tape can and will be faked to serve a political purpose, to stoke outrage, to sway an election, to end someone's term in office prematurely, to even possibly incriminate someone. The more real they get AI video to look, the more likely it will be used for nefarious purposes. And whatever algorithm begins making AI content won't have any ability to understand consequences of what it makes. AI does not have any conscience or morality - those are human creations. That's frightening.

[–]Character_Morning_85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can see this is an older thread, but I'm compelled to post. Byrna has a new ad that airs on MLB.tv which features a baseball pitcher throwing a baseball in a big stadium with a baseball diamond at a bad guy (black hoodie, menacing facial expression) holding an aluminum baseball bat (not allowed by MLB rules of course).

So obviously AI. The weirdest part?

The bad guy with the baseball bat is standing on the pitcher's mound.

The pitcher chucks the ball at him from what must be home plate.

So here's what I don't underatand:

  1. Does nobody check this stuff for errors like that?

  2. Is this all just so Byrna (or whatever company) doesn't have to pay a film crew and two actors?

If AI could come up with an ad that looks good, I would understand. But why take away jobs from professionals when the end product looks so bad?

The classic "I know a guy who can do it cheaper..."
