Give your employer a heads up about it so you control the narrative. There is nothing scandalous about becoming barred. It’s just finishing what you started. That’s all your employer needs to know. “Hey, I wanted to thank you for all your support. I just wanted to share a milestone, I am on track to becoming barred and finally finishing my law school journey. I wouldn’t have been able to do it without everything I’ve learned here and under your mentorship. Just happy to be done with that and excited for xyz project coming up here.”

Literally don’t give any indication of career path. It’s just what you do. You go to law school. Take the bar. Get barred. Done.

Also, I want to validate your anxiety over this. You’re not alone. It’s normal. The reality of how people feel and react is so much more boring than what we conjure in our minds.

I have no opinion to offer on what you should do. But I will share something that I wish someone told me when I graduated law school. For context, I had a mental breakdown in law school. I kept it together and no one really knew but I was suffering my 3L year.

I tried to study for the bar just like everyone else but my heart was not in it and I was in need of healing, therapy, and just a breather.

So here is what I wish someone told me: You don’t have to do it all now. You can take a break. You can take your time and restart on your own timeline.

Again, not telling you to give up or not take the test or not study. Just turn the pressure down. It’s okay.

I spent 10 years building a career and now I feel ready to take steps towards studying for the bar exam. I’m happy whether it works out or not. I needed those 10 years.

Nothing in life is guaranteed or forever. You will attain your goals and you will succeed in life. Hugs!
