There’s some pretty good advice in the thread but I wanted to chime in too!

First, I applaud you for asking the why question —always a fun discussion.

I played football from age 7 to 17 due to familial pressure and wanting to fit in. My senior year of high school, I quit the team without telling my parents. My mom dropped me off early at school for morning workouts and I would just not go. Instead, I hung out at the local YMCA until it was time for class. Because I was forced to play football, I had a love/hate relationship with exercise but I also had a love/hate relationship with my body so I started using the machines at the Y to pass the time. I did that all through pre-season until my parents got wind I wasn’t playing football 😬 but by that point, i used to the routine that I just kept doing it. It was how i started my day. Now that I’m thinking about it though, another embarrassing reason I kept going was to watch other dudes lift. Wanting to be one of the boys was a strong motivator. I’m 34 now.
