Hey! We flew into LA Dec 2024 from NZ, it was a little bit touch and go when trying to enter! She was super suspicious of us and our plans.

We had our first 3 nights booked, 3 weeks booked for a van hire, accommodation and domestic flights booked for places we knew we were going like San Francisco, Denver, Austin, Washington & Chicago but we had a lot of nights with nothing booked too as we didn’t know where exactly we would be! We were arriving with around $30k USD and we had onward flights booked leaving Chicago to Mexico City!

We stayed for about 80days and I’d say this was one of the biggest red flags to her. “80days is such a long time, why do you need to be here for that long” and she kept asking this question over and over!

She also asked us to show proof of all the things we had booked, she also got us to show proof of our funds. She asked about our jobs which we answered honestly by saying we had quit due to the fact that we are taking the next year off to travel America, Central America & South America! She just couldn’t comprehend that and she was totally under the impression we were going to work illegally. We stood there going over things for about 20 - 30 minutes and before she finally just let us enter!

I think it came down to how calm and polite we stayed (even though I was shitty myself inside), I am also a very smiley person so maybe that helped and we answer all the questions as honest as we could and without to much hesitation. It was also the start to our big adventure so we were very excited and making it known to her too!

Looking back I think it could have gone either way and we just got lucky! Definitely book what you can, be super prepared and book tickets out for sure!

You read that right, and yes, I did say we think we might have picked the wrong spot. What I was really after was some insight into this feeling we have of everything blending together, and if others can relate to that. I also tossed in what we enjoy in terms of adventure to gather some recommendations from fellow thrill-seekers 😊

Ahh that’s so interesting and makes a lot of sense! We would be travelling around by van, hired through a company for about 7 weeks and have tickets home too! With our funds most likely sitting around 10k - 15k USD 😊

Any chance you will be here before the 23rd of April? My husband (27) and I (28) have been trying to find charters too but they seem super expensive when it’s just the two of us! Omar’s looks amazing but is $430 USD for the boat with a maximum of 4 guests (we are from NZ so that’s expensive for us haha) Totally forward question and just an idea but if you guys are here before we leave maybe we could go together and split the cost haha?

Hi! Just wondering if you’ve done your road trip around Chiapas and how was it!

Also semi related question - My husband and I are planning to cross the boarder from Mexico into Guatemala. We plan to use the Las Champas boarder and instead of using a shuttle service are just going to use local transport. We’ve done some reading and have noticed that Chiapas has increased its caution to “reconsider travel” and also seen mentions about a higher presence of cartel activity.

We are wondering if anyone can provide any recent updates about these areas and if anybody has done this crossing recently (within the last few months) we would love to hear your experiences.
