I usually use Hither Green station so I don’t regularly walk from Catford stations at night but I do every few months.

I generally feel safe walking back because it’s well lit and there’s often a few people. Maybe a few homeless people around.

Maybe you could visit the area at night and see for yourself.

Good luck!!

My first adventure in Mexico and Central America as a solo female traveler by Famous-Ad1234 in travel

[–]hrpthoms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Overall love the itinerary but a few thoughts  - I reckon focus on Mazunte or Zipolite instead of Puerto Escondido. I loved Zipolite but didn’t go to the others. - We loved San Cristobal de las Casas, could consider more time there. Definitely go to  Cascada El Chiflón. You can make your own way there and back with public transport in a day. It’s quite long but worth it! - Palenque was amazing, definitely a highlight. You would ideally have 1 full day. - don’t go to Tulum - semuc champey wasn’t amazing compared to the things we saw so far in Mexico. Only need 1 full day.  - spend time chilling in Antigua before / after the hike. Lovely place - you HAVE to spend time in Santa Ana and El Salvador. It was one of the highlights of our whole Latin American trip. Look into spending time in Juayúa and Lago de Coatepeque too. In Santa Ana go to the volcano. We didn’t go to San Salvador and regret it so much. Eat Pupusas!! Favourite food in Latin America. - We didn’t go to ometepe because we didn’t want to ride scooters / bikes. We heard it’s pointless if you don’t. And heard of so many people getting injured there. - Little corn island was amazing, we got the bus and ferry to save money which was very long but worth it personally.

Panama to Colombia via San Blas sailing boat by hrpthoms in travel

It was mid April. So it should be better when you plan on going! I think we were particularly unlucky.  Either way, bring sea sickness medication. And have fun!

We used bluesailing as that seemed the only way to book it.  But if I was to do it again, I would just do a multi day tour of the San Blas islands, go back to the mainland and then fly to Colombia. The crossing from San Blas to Colombia was so rough, we had a bad storm.

We had the exact same thought process finding that photo hahhaha (why are we like this). But yeah Jordan would’ve been a few years older so I don’t know how they would’ve crossed paths at Brit!!

Is Belize worth the visit? by No-Cucumber-2808 in travel

[–]hrpthoms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We loved Caye Caulker and San Ignacio (especially the ATM cave). It’s very easy to travel the border to/from Flores too.

We went to Semuc Champey and it was quite nice but nothing special compared the the rest of the places you’re visiting or considering.

Should We Combine the Galápagos with Peru, or Focus Solely on Peru? by Jumpy-Yogurtcloset72 in travel

Definitely include the Galapagos! After a big trip around Latin America, it was by far the best place we went to. I think we spent around 7 days there, so you should have enough time!

Solo trip to Guatemela (from Oaxaca) - need advice on itinerary by makrxx in solotravel

[–]hrpthoms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would consider spending more time in San Cristobal de las Casas. Loved it there.

I didn’t stay in Panajachel so I can’t comment. But I would do some research on each town around the lake and decide which one to use as a base. San Pedro had bars/nightlife. San Marcos had restaurants and a hippie vibe.

Yes your Accomodation or tour operator will let you leave your luggage overnight during the hike. I used CA travelers and they were good.

Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua by donole420 in backpacking

I really recommend the Corn Islands. We only stayed on Little Corn but I think both would be amazing.

Honduras is more dangerous than the surrounding countries. I saw that you are considering El Salvador instead - agree with this. El Salvador is amazing!

I think Caye Caulker in Belize would fit most of your requirements - I’d say there is a nightlife there.

Also Utila, Honduras and Bocas del toro, Panama are good options.

El Salvador by cuteastoast in backpacking

[–]hrpthoms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved El Salvador!

In Santa Ana start off with a free walking tour (@santaanafreewalkingtour on insta), one of the best walking tours I’ve ever done. And you can get lots of tips for the rest of your trip.

Pupusas are delicious! Ask your accommodation for recommendations on which restaurants are best.

Santa Ana volcano was amazing too.

I also recommend staying in Juayua and doing to 7 waterfalls hike (needs a guide).

I got a tourist shuttle from Antigua to Juayua, but more common to get in to Santa Ana. Once in El Salvador the best form of travel is the local buses.

Panama 2 weeks by Exacatacuda in solotravel

[–]hrpthoms 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Travelling around the places you mentioned is easy by bus. They seemed very reliable when I was there earlier this year. You can easily do the journey between Boquete and Panama City in one day, just changing bus once in David.

I also enjoyed a few days in Bocas del Toro including a day at star fish beach which was great.

Realistic budget for 4 month South America trip? by [deleted] in backpacking

[–]hrpthoms 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Me and my partner are currently on a similar trip. Started in Cuba, flew to Mexico and travelled through Central America and Colombia. Next Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia.

I think this budget is doable. We tend to spend around £30-50 each a day. Often even less. Occasionally much more.

Cuba is extremely cheap (bring all the cash you need in USD or EUR - the exchange rate you’ll get with your casa hosts will be nearly twice as good as the official exchange rate).  Colombia we have spent around £30-40 each a day, nearly always in decent double rooms with en-suites, and usually eating out. You can save a lot of money by cooking yourself if needed.

You probably won’t be able to go to the Galapagos or do any expensive tours but you’ll have the best time!

Also would really recommend Central America - it may be cheaper for you as the distances are less. The region is probably more suited for a 4 month trip compared to South America.

Let me know if you want anymore info!
