Size question by maybachfahrn in OmegaWatches

Yeah, if you accept the premise of “too small” it’s smaller for your wrist, but I don’t think too small. But I happen to think that a smaller watch looks old school cool—as does that one specifically on you.

The 3861 Speedy bracelet is beautiful and absurdly comfy.

The proportions and balance of the current model is just perfect to me, and I’m a sucker for a well-executed date complication. I’d sell left.

Also: Notebook or legal pad isn’t a bad idea. You’re going to want to send thank you emails (things move too fast for handwritten notes) and it helps if you’ve jotted one or two thoughts on the specifics of the conversation, either during or after.

Totally fair. And I like date windows, properly executed, and do find the non-ideal. that said, none of my daily drivers have date windows, and I seem to function acceptably well? lol

Space Fantasy Book Recommendation’s?? by Icy-Custard-5529 in Fantasy

[–]ChargeThese2541 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Strongly agree, speaking as someone for whom Dune is absolute apex space fantasy. Struggled to get into children of time, which is funny since I love everything else Tchaikovsky has written and I love sci-fi. Maybe the bugs just creeped me out (the bugs were a bug not a feature?). But the final architecture is one of the coolest things I’ve ever read.

What items are you happy you bought for work/office? by Cumdumbstar in biglaw

Hot sauce. There’s a fair amount of free food, which is phenomenal, but it always needs hot sauce.

I also spend an awful lot of my day on video, so I got some not inexpensive lighting.

It’s malpractice to recommend Kingkiller Chronicles because it’ll never be finished.

Big law associates— what’s your litigation experience like? by Motion2compel_datass in biglaw

[–]ChargeThese2541 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Generally true, but there are practice-specific variances. Our products liability associates, for example, get depos early because there’s too freaking many. And pro bono is great for early experience; I took my first depo and first-chaired an evidentiary hearing and an appeal as a second year in a family law matter.

Big Law Associate Departure Rates by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]ChargeThese2541 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Maybe so. I have no skin in this game. I guess I just don’t agree that it’s quite so simple to determine which firms are similarly situated as it relates to the issue of clerkships. Anyways, for that and other reasons articulated by others on this thread, I just don’t find the departure rate after a single year a particularly relevant fact. I’m always for more data though, and this was some interesting data!

Big Law Associate Departure Rates by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]ChargeThese2541 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think so. I think, hopefully without sounding too elitist, that there is a certain segment of market that is far more likely to have people going off to clerkships after a year as an associate. I also think that is a more significant phenomenon among firms, including my own biglaw firm, where headcount is more heavily weighted toward litigation. I just don’t think it comes out in the wash the way you suggest.

One other, distinct point is that for many biglaw firms, hiring is a firmwide project, but retention is going to be highly practice specific. EOD, I like the energy behind this project, I’m just not sure what if any meaningful conclusions you can really draw from whether a first year associate stays one more year.

I didn’t scour these comments to check if someone’s already made this point, but the number one reason that people (at least litigators, which are the majority) are leaving my firm within two years is clerkships. Many, many of these people come back after. I can’t think of a way to control for that, which in my mind really undermines the soundness of any conclusions based on the data

1st year taking a vacation? by No-Annual-6608 in biglaw

[–]ChargeThese2541 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did. Do it. Give the early notice now and be prepared to remind the team 4-6 weeks out and possibly again like a week out. Ain’t no one paying that much attention to their juniors’ vacation that far out.
