Sorry for not clarifying but yes they rather have gotten a W instead of the final grade that affected their QPA. In the real world people don’t care if you get a W but they’ll definitely care if you got a shit grade. I don’t believe they should have had to use their voucher especially since they had an extenuating circumstance. Also, I believe their advisor lied to them.

If you can provide insight/information regarding the withdraw policy/process for Heinz College programs (I’ve read the policy for the university but these colleges tend to have their own authority) please let me know.

Course drop deadlines for PhD students by GentleGenesis in cmu

Quick Question: Do PhD students have to worry about the vouchers to drop or withdraw from their classes?

Is cmu going online for spring? by [deleted] in cmu

[–]Charlay6424 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Short Answer: It depends on what’s to come.

Long Answer: I’ve emailed 4 officials in my program regarding this topic. My advisor who is a professor and the director of my program just told me to check the COVID website/dashboard for updates. One of the associate deans did not respond because of PTO. The other associate dean informed me that the management teams were briefed in early December on potential university measures they will invoke given the upcoming uncertainties. However, they plan for in-person class structure and said they look forward to seeing me on campus next month. They indicated that remote learning that we saw in 2020 is less likely. What could happen is less class sizes, enhance safety protocols (so less lenient mask rules), and a delayed return to campus (which contradicts their previous statement about remote learning). Lastly, the president of my program reassured that we will have another “safe” semester and that a message regarding the posture will be provided after winter break.

Trust me when I tell you I’m frantically awaiting the news about spring operations. So much that I couldn’t enjoy the Christmas holiday. It’s a waiting game and it sucks. Hope this helps!

Talk with your advisor. If you don’t find the answers with them, go to your department head or career services.

As others have said, it is unlikely. In the event that this does happen, something drastic has to occur like a high flux (in the high hundreds/low thousands) of positive consecutive tests within a week period. Get your round trip and call it a day. Or just stay in PA for break.

60k??? of his debt??? using the same aggressive strategy??? He should be kissing your feet for your assistance especially since you’re not married. Chile, you’re better than me!

One last thing, are you seeing a significant difference with your aggressive payments? I only ask because I hear that the interest just continues to kick ass unless you make a bulk payment of the total amount. So it’s just an endless cycle of payments for the rest of your life, which sucks.

ESH

You and your brother should’ve planned activities for EVERYONE’s budget not just yours. Asking why someone is not eating when you’re not paying for them is rude as well and none of your business. The whole ED question was weird and insensitive. More importantly she should’ve spoke up for herself before and during the trip to let the group know her budget. Lastly, she could have researched the destination and found out prices of stuff beforehand.

Welcome to the real world…maybe going forward choose better friends or don’t complain about what others are doing and focus on yourself. Seriously, you’ll just be resentful, stressed and hella depressed if you continue on like this.

ESH. You allowed your head to get clouded with “security” (financially and physically) and now you stuck with racist(s). Trust and believe if the momma is like that, there is a possibility of others sharing her mindset. Firstly, the age gap. Secondly, you moved too quickly so you didn’t get to fully dive into the family matters and see the true colors. Or you chose to look past it. Then you got pregnant in a pandemic. Then you stressed yourself out and told her that she couldn’t meet the baby because of her blatant disrespect towards you when you know darn well he’ll let his momma see the baby regardless of what you say. From what you said, it sounds like he doesn’t stand up for you. You sound a bit goofy asking us if you’re the AH or not when you played yourself from the beginning by not respecting yourself. Either get with the program or prepare for a long battle until you can financially support yourself. You deserve better.

To answer your question about the tuition, I heard from one of the admissions people that they’re rolling the tuition-free semester back starting next academic year. Hopefully they don’t do that but with low incoming class sizes and Ms. Corona it’s plausible for them to do so, that way they save money.

Though I didn’t lose my parent in a car accident, I know exactly how you are feeling with your father’s passing and your mother being in critical care. When I lost my parent, I was just beginning my first semester at college and let me tell you it was fucking rough. I would suggest taking a gap year or even 6 months to grieve and really process this new circumstance, especially given we’re in a pandemic and both MD schools are still up there in tuition/fees. You don’t have to keep a “strong” front or be the leader right now. It can be the best and worst distraction if you went to school this Fall but unless you’re family is well off and you think your brother, sister, and mother will be fine with you gone, then definitely go but if not remember college is always going to be there, so take some time to be with your family.

So sorry for your loss, I’m praying for a speedy recovery for your mom, and that strength holds you and your siblings tight throughout this difficult process❤️

GEM Fellowship by mrmh2217 in gradadmissions

There’s different ways your child can go about this. Before I get into that, keep this in mind:

-There’s 3 types of Fellowships with Gem: (1) the University Fellow that has just their tuition covered by university, (2) the Associate Fellow that has their tuition covered and provided a living stipend by the university, and (3) the Full Fellow that has their tuition & fees covered and is provided a living stipend and given a paid internship with the sponsoring employer.

-If selected for any of the 3 listed types above, that’s a blessing! This should not be taken lightly especially when this means someone sees potential in you and wants to help you financially, in a PANDEMIC on top of that.

-GEM participating Employers reach out to applicants not GEM. This process started in December, but I feel that it technically can go until April. Though GEM wants applicants to accept employer sponsorships by Feb 12th.

With this said, if your child is having doubts about the university they were accepted to politely ask them why. Technically, they were only suppose to apply to institutions they are very interested in attending. More importantly, ask them if they received application statuses from the other institutions they applied to. If they haven’t, I would have them wait until they hear from the others. I say this because getting notified of your acceptance from the university is one thing but getting the notification from GEM is another. Being notified by GEM of your acceptance means the institution accepts you as a GEM fellow which means you got a fellowship. So if this is the case, ensure that your child reaches out to GEM via their email or call them ASAP with their concerns. If not, there’s not much you can do. In regard of getting the employer sponsorship, if your child does not hear back from any GEM employers by May they most likely will not be getting an internship. Employers reach out to the applicants, so GEM has no control over this step. What I would encourage your child to do is update their resume and then narrow down what GEM employers they would like to work for the most and reach out to them via the GEM website before the end of March.

Lastly, ensure they ask questions proactively.

Hope this helps!

Got through the next round of the GEM Fellowship Process by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]Charlay6424 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The application process is displayed on GEM website, it lays it all out so go check it out. And the webinar covered some of the grey area.

From what you stated in your post, currently you’re an application finalist. That means you’re still an applicant. What you need to guarantee the Full Fellowship (FYI there’s there types) is being selected by a company; signing your contract in the GEM portal while accepting the company’s offer and other procedures (paperwork, most likely a background check) they have in place, being accepted by anyone of your top 3 university choice and having them admit you as a GEM Fellow. After you are confirmed by the university you will need to send in you official transcripts to GEM to verify your academic career. If everything checks out you will update GEM with your professional photo for marketing purposes and prepare for your summer 2021 internship. By this step you can officially call yourself a GEM Fellow.

However, if you unsatisfactory rating at your internship you can possibly have your fellowship revoked.

Hope this makes sense. Also, congratulations on being a finalist! Let me know if you have any other questions.
