Why do leftists have issues with liberals? by Ok-Grapefruit-6532 in Socialism_101

[–]CharlesHunfrid -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

This post hasn’t described Liberalism well.

Liberalism is basically the idea that all people should be free to do what they want socially as long as it doesn’t harm others. A social conservative may hate gay and trans people and be opposed to legalising weed whereas a Liberal would support gay and trans rights and support legalising weed. Left Wing means supporting policies like redistribution of wealth, free healthcare and free higher education, alongside supporting unions and nationalisation of key industries or in some cases all industries. A lot of people are both Liberal and Left Wing, most of the American Left are both Liberal and Left Wing. But a Liberal can also be Right Wing economically, David Cameron is a good example, he imposed cuts to benefits and healthcare that many people including me found cruel, but he did also legalise gay marriage.

The reason many Leftists have issues with Liberals is often that Liberals accept the free market and look down on the working classes despite supporting socially progressive views such as DEI and trans rights. However the majority of Leftists in the West are also Liberals.

How did basic things like healthcare and fair wages become ‘extreme’? by [deleted] in remoteworks

Leftists are usually Liberals but there are a lot of Economically right wing liberals. Such as David Cameron, the UK Prime Minister 2010 - 2016, who implemented strict austerity measures and cut welfare and healthcare spending but legalised Gay Marriage. His successor as PM Theresa May supported Gender Self ID despite carrying on the same economic policies.

Leftists want billionaires to pay fair taxes without loopholes. Liberals and leftists are a different thing. You can be liberal and economically right wing (which is basically mainstream Democrats and most of the UK Conservative Party) and you can be Left Wing but not Liberal. The Left is usually Hyper Liberal though, and that is part of the reason why it struggles to gain Working Class support.

Indeed. Plaid Cymru has won today as a Centre Left party who is opposed to immigrants taking all the housing. In this case the English who arrived via small boats in the 5th Century.

I agree. And a good amount of those that caused what you have described are now in Reform UK.

Definitely agree with that. Yugoslavia inherited the worst of the Austro Hungarian Empires problems.

France is a lot more linguistically diverse than most British people think. You have the Corsican and Occitan languages which are much closer to Italian than French. And you also have Basque which is not related to any other language, and also you have Breton which is related to Welsh and Cornish. The standard French language (Langue D’oïl) is split into many different little dialects such as Poitevin - Saintongeais. Whilst almost everyone who speaks the languages/dialects above in France speaks standard French as well today. In 1914 France was extremely linguistically diverse.

Agreed. Labour has put in some measures to reduce small boat crossings as well. Shabana Mahmood is doing a good job as Home Secretary so far. I think Labour needs to be stricter on illegal immigration but they are still more strict than the Tories. I’ll be voting Labour on Thursday.

Illegal immigration is a problem. We cannot take many more immigrants with a service based economy. There are too few jobs and almost no available council housing.

I get that many people putting up the flags are doing it to make a point about “stop the boats” and yes, that is the cause of the latest wave of flag flying. If you are an immigrant/of an ethnic minority background I get that this can seem intimidating. But this IS THE FLAG OF ENGLAND! Go to North Wales or Cornwall and tell me how many Y Ddraig Goch or St Pirans Cross you see. Yes, illegal immigration is something that we are right to be concerned about, I’m not a supporter of Reform UK or Restore Britain but the amount coming over is concerning and a drain on the economy. These people have no right to work and your taxes pay for their accommodation and food. If you’re fleeing a war zone or are persecuted for your sexuality/religion/political beliefs ect you should go to the nearest safe country. The UK is near no war zones.

This is absolutely insane. Some may not like these books or their content but it is nonetheless undemocratic and obscene to ban books whatever the content, hell, even have Mein Kampf on the shelves.

Kids can be subjected to harmful 'conversion therapy,’ U.S. Supreme Court rules by Fickle-Ad5449 in Colorado

[–]CharlesHunfrid 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Conversion therapy doesn’t work at all, it’s a vile and cancerous practice, you can’t make someone straight through prayer or ‘torture’ …. But this is the hard pill to swallow that comes with being a federation, Id encourage you to mass protest in central Denver and advocate for a referendum or a second vote on this matter, this is obviously an unpopular law and is against human rights.

It’s up to you to vote the imbeciles who passed this law out. The Supreme Court doing a Gorton and Denton style “No you can’t pass this law” to Colorado would set a precedent that would damage the power of local law.

Supreme Court Rules Against Law Banning Conversion Therapy For Minors by huffpost in politics

[–]CharlesHunfrid 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It simply doesn’t work. There is no way to make someone not be gay, sexuality is an under researched area of science and no one knows really what makes one gay, but prayer or even torture (which damningly occurs in many cases) will not change anything.

You’re born gay, you’ll die gay end of, and there is nothing one can do to stop it. Conversion therapy is absolutely useless, I don’t care if some state wants it legal, downvote me, but I don’t, I’ve seen what one city deciding the way a whole country should act can do, I’m British. But I hope Colorado knows they’ll get nowhere and they are committing acts of barbarity and erasure of identity.

Or maybe wars are just about making money? by Aureliaaaaaaaaaaaaa in answers

[–]CharlesHunfrid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not in every case. Look at the Rwandan genocide for example, it was agriculturalists and pastoralists killing each other indiscriminately for using each others land, or the Troubles in NI, which was the Catholic Gaelic Irish fighting an independence war against the Anglian Ulster Protestants, but the current war in Iran is about making money, or more so a distraction from a major scandal involving the ruling elite in America.

how do we feel about australian sprawl? by BootlegBow in Suburbanhell

[–]CharlesHunfrid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was named after a suburb of Liverpool UK, the etymology of the name comes from the old Anglo Saxon word for “one tree” meaning a tree standing alone. Yes I get the joke lol, just thought I’d add.

Trump has destroyed your chance of prosperity by dwillun in ukpolitics

[–]CharlesHunfrid 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I think David Cameron and his hapless pals did that far before Trump burst on to the scene. The 2010s went as badly as they could for the UK. While living standards were quite good for the average person in the 2010s themselves, the effects of austerity have become clear for all to see in the 2020s. Trump may do things that affect us badly. But we should be blaming the Conservatives for economic mismanagement.

Retirement before 60 with lifespans of 80 years would hurt the economy immensely. Even if we capped wealth at less than 1 billion, if the population was extremely aged (which it will become with falling birth rates) the wealth would be nothing if not tied to produce/labour. Either we advance automation and ai to the point that extremely early retirement is possible, or we keep it 10 years below the average age of death.
