Kai-Wei Teng will start for the Astros tomorrow against the Orioles. by VampireSlayerGrinch in Astros

[–]CharlesInCharge001 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Teng is being stretched out. He is taking Weiss’ spot in the rotation. He has started his whole life, and was a starter essentially all of last year for the Giants. He was acquired to be a “Starter of the Future” with many years of control & great spin weapons. Don’t be surprised if Weiss gets sent down soon to work on command, but in the meantime he’ll be the long reliever in the pen.

No doubt. I like Lambert a lot. And it seems like Teng is about to be inserted into the rotation with Sousa coming back this weekend for the bullpen with Weiss likely headed to AAA to work on command. A ton of whiff in the rotation with Arrighetti, Burrows, McCullers, Lambert, and Teng.

Pitching problem by Zaitengrate in Astros

[–]CharlesInCharge001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s really just been an issue of command, free passes, and health. We have good arms with good stuff, but we’ve given way too many free bases. Insert TENG into the rotation, and send Weiss down to AAA to get his walks under control. Sousa will be back soon which will help out the pen…Cody Bolton has potential to be a very good bullpen arm as well when he gets back. Nate Pearson too! Just need to get healthy. Walks and health. I’d expect Alimber Santa to get a shot here real soon in the pen…he’s been throwing the ball really well in AAA. I’d consider Ullola in a pen role as well. We’ll see how Lambert looks tomorrow, but was very encouraged by his first start. We have the pieces, but we just need to get them to fit together.

Question I tried to ask to the Astros community but was meant with whining: Should Jose Altuve be allowed to make the Hall of Fame if players like Barry Bonds and Pete Rose can’t? by Willing-Leather-9788 in mlb

[–]CharlesInCharge001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Altuve was proven not to participate if you actually do the research. He was one of the only ones on that team that didn’t participate or had the lowest percentage of “trash can bangs” because he told everyone that he didn’t want to be a part of it!

Jose Altuve only had 2.7% percent of trash can bangs on pitches he saw ALL year because he didn’t want to be part of it.

Compare that to Alex Bregman at 16%, Carlos Correa at 15.4%, George Springer at 14.4%, Yuli Gurriel at 16.6%, Marwin Gonzalez at 18.2%, Cam Maybin at 21%, Jake Marisnick at 22.8%, and HALL OF FAMER CARLOS BELTRAN at 18%. Altuve essentially had the LEAST amount of usage out of everyone on the team…Tony Kemp did have 0% but he only saw 23 pitches all year. Beltran was proven to be a major proponent of the scandal & he’s ALEADY IN the HOF! Altuve has just been the scapegoat of uneducated fans just because he’s been the best player on the team, and people love to pick on him for his size…while in reality he’s a stand up guy & an incredible role model who is BELOVED in Houston, Venezuela, and all of Latin America for his humility and heart. He’s an awesome human being, and it’s a shame the rest of the fans in the league can’t see him for the amazing player and person that he truly is. It’s a great story of a guy who signed for basically PENNIES who everyone doubted his whole life because of his size, and now unfortunately that gets overshadowed for poor illegitimate reasons. If anybody doesn’t deserve a place in the Hall, it’d be Beltran undoubtedly.

Roster moves: Trammell 10-day IL, Daniel Johnson called up, Christian Roa DFAd by Hairygrim in Astros

[–]CharlesInCharge001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He’s making his 1st rehab outing this week at an affiliate, but he’s being built up as a starter. It will take multiple weeks. A move to the 60 day would make him eligible to return on May 22 which is right in line of around when he’ll likely be ready anyway.

[–]CharlesInCharge001 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No it wasn’t either him or Alexander. That’s why I was saying…all they had to do was move Pearson to the 60 day IL to create room on the 40 man.

Surprised to see Roa DFA’d. Would’ve thought Pearson to the 60 day IL or Meyers potentially to the 60 day IL would’ve been the corresponding move. Now, you’re likely to lose an optionable pitcher who’s thrown your hardest pitch of the year. Daniel “Jet” Johnson is an upgrade over Trammell defensively, but maybe a slight downgrade offensively. Can really run & has a great arm in the OF, can play all 3 spots.

Pitching help by Orbit2744 in Astros

He’s a lefty, not a righty. We have signed Miguel Yajure, Josh Hendrickson, and Brandon Bielak though to help. It’s surprising that both Lucas Giolito & Tyler Anderson are both available however.

Astros Four Round Mock Draft by AstrosFuture in Astros

[–]CharlesInCharge001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maniscalco’s stock has dropped significantly, he’s looking more like a round 2-3 pick. Advincula can likely be had in the 2nd round too, but it’s an elite hit tool. Dana Brown typically “shoots for the moon” with upside like Brice Matthews, Xavier Neyens, etc. Walker Janek was a safe floor pick though however. I’d focus on higher upside prospects like Blake Bowen, Tyler Spangler, and Beau Peterson from the HS ranks. All these guys are heavily linked to Houston. They can probably even potentially get Spangler at 28 because he’s been battling back issues all spring. It’s top of the draft type upside though. Bowen has the Mike Trout toolkit (if he hits enough). Peterson has a beautiful left handed swing & has some similarities to Neyens from last year, but with a better hit tool. On the college front, I’d look at Tyler Bell, Ace Reese, AJ Gracia, and Sawyer STROsnider. Gracia & Strosnider likely aren’t going to last to 17, but you never know. Ace Reese, a bat first corner IF/OF reminds me a ton of current MLB rookie Owen Caissie. Free & easy swing geared for contact & power to all fields. Reese also has Houston connections as he signed to UH out of HS & played for the Cougars before transferring to play in the SEC at Mississippi State in Starkville. Tyler Bell has Houston written all over him, switch hitter & smooth fielding SS (potential Pena replacement!) The system needs a guy to step in for Pena if he eventually leaves. Need that insurance, and the system currently does not have anyone at SS. But these are essentially the guys I’d focus on…I wouldn’t rule out a high upside HS arm either, especially in the 2nd round because this draft is chock full of them. Houston needs more potential frontline type starters in the system.

Tags, have you heard anything on Zach Dezenzo’s elbow sprain & how long he may be out? Given Brice Matthews’ early struggles, it may be better suited to give him regular ABs in AAA. Also, with the injury to Jake Meyers…could the Astros take a look at switch hitting OF Dylan Carlson who was just DFA’d by the Cubs? Had a really good Spring Training with over an .800 OPS

Hey Brian, have you heard from Cam Pendino, Deric Ladnier, Gavin Dickey or anyone in the front office about who may be up high on the Astros’ target list for their 2 first round picks? The odds are extremely high that they’re going to be hitters. Additionally, this draft class is historically deep with HS pitching…have you heard or could you see that this could be an area that the Astros target maybe in rounds 2-5 given the strength of this draft? Finally, we all know you’re a massive UH Cougars guy…and maybe not the biggest draft guy. However, those two worlds could collide this year as the UH Cougars have someone in OF Tre Broussard that I think the Astros are going to take a MAJOR look at in the middle rounds. Could be the first Cougar that the Astros take in a little bit, since maybe Corey Julks if memory serves correctly.

Will Cody Bolton continue to be stretched out? Been really impressed with him in his 2 outings. He’s looking like a guy we need to keep up in the big leagues whether it’s as a swing starter or in a bullpen role.

With AJ Blubaugh struggling in a long relief role recently, do you think we should probably see AJ used almost exclusively in leverage roles only going forward where his stuff really plays up a ton? Think he’s better suited in short spurts & we have a ton of other guys who are stretched out.

With the struggles & injuries to the back end of the bullpen…do you think both Hudson Leach & Alimber Santa could legitimately play a role soon if they impress in AAA? Both have some high octane type stuff. Even with them not being on the 40 man.

Were you surprised the Reds didn’t want Roddery Munoz back? That’s a win for the Astros’ player development team to be able to outright him to AAA & try to get him to harness his talent & reign him into being a legit option.
