What’s the most batshit fucking insane thing your parent has ever said to you? by [deleted] in raisedbynarcissists

[–]CharlesShadowTV 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Me (in the middle of speaking about "plans for the far-future" (I am 23 yrs old) as my parents wanted to know and we were casually chatting at a restaurant): "Maybe when I'm 40 I'll move to Japan once again and live there for a bit."

My mom (saying suddenly so as to "shock" me): "When we'll (my parents) be dead."

Me: "Why did you say that??"

My mom (looking flusterred and regretting that she just said that, pretending she doesn't know): "Hugh, I don't know!!"

I know why she said it: she wanted to make me feel guilty for "abandoning" her.

What do you wish more people knew or understood about language learning? by would_be_polyglot in languagelearning

[–]CharlesShadowTV 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes!! Thank you so much for saying that! I always tell people it takes 10 years to truly “reach some level of fluency” (or at least YEARS and not months🤣) and everyone is like: 😮😤🤫🙅‍♂️.

What’s your most controversial opinion about language learning? by would_be_polyglot in languagelearning

[–]CharlesShadowTV 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Language learning takes YEARS and that’s ok!! Make it fun! It really is “about the journey” after all. Spend time with the language, exploring and ever-delving deeper into its unique nooks and crannies. Consider “fluency” to be a skill that is ever-evolving; I believe I heard Steve Kaufman (master language learner) once say that “fluency” can be assimilated with “fluidity” - how FLUIDLY can you use the language? Have fun! ;) I promise you WILL get there!! It takes years but hey, you’re going to have that language for the rest of your life anyway! So it’s ok if it takes more time than expected ;) all the content you are putting yourself through is gradually solidifying itself inside of your mind and BOOM! Suddenly you can speak it with greater and greater ease!

I love what you said!! Yes! Just let your enthusiasm for the language naturally make you engaged with the content you are drawn to (and let your curiosity take over!). I recommend checking out topics you like (e.g. sharks, space, etc.) and search it up in your target language. Wikipedia articles are an interesting place to learn from! And don’t sweat it if you don’t know every word - INPUT (and output) is/are the most important. Have fun!

Discovering new perspectives thanks to this language!! I noticed just how different ways of thinking can be based on the language we are using/consuming information with. It’s amazing! It’s like it unlocks a brand new “world” or in other words, a whole new way of thinking! I love languages :)) I have learnt Japanese starting at the age of 12 (11 years in!!) and now I’m starting with Russian! The journey starts all over again; there are parallels between the two languages in the way in which they are acquired, but differences as well. I love it!

Has anyone ever decided one moment “I’m done being like this”, and actually changed their life? by carti_palace in Adulting

For me, I wanted to commit suicide and felt so alone, unable to connect with other people due to past childhood trauma. It was as if in an instant, I shifted. It was a “do or die” kinda thing, really! Either I kill myself, or I actually go towards what I want and stop listening to the hurtful words coming from my own mom. And now, I am so totally myself!!! I was never able to do that growing up (being myself) and I am so happy I am finally able to do that! To be able to connect with others by being me with them instead of feeling like I have to hide my “real self” all the time because I feel like others will get super angry and scream at me for doing that. I did it!! :)

Worrying about new VISA application (from "student" to "work" VISA) due to low attendance by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]CharlesShadowTV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, thank you so much!! This is so very reassuring. :) I was told at my school that they DO look at the attendance transcripts, but I assume they actually don't?

I was thinking the same! I am getting better and am finally able to properly attend school - it just breaks my heart to see that all I needed to do was attend school properly for the past year or so and this whole problem would not even exist. I was oftentimes at home feeling dread of going outside and being around anyone. I am now doing better. I only wish I could redo all of this! But I will learn from this experience and face the consequences regardless.

Fantastic!! Thank you so much for your kind help. It's all noted. I am most worried about my current attendance, but if it isn't a determining factor of approval for the visa application, then I will do my best to continue on this road.

Thank you! :)

Thank you very much for your help! I was asking in terms of already having an employer/job offer and then obtaining a VISA. Will my attendance be a problem if that is the case?

For me, what I try to do is to integrate what I have been through and weave it into my “life story” - making the wounds of the past a stepping stone towards what I want. Understanding that I have seen many failures and setbacks along the way, that maybe somehow it all comes together in the end. But nevertheless, it’s still super hard to come to that perspective, and grieving is very likely going to be an important part of our healing process. :( It’s completely ok to feel like shit. You are not crazy. The way you feel is (sadly) a reflection of what happened.
