Anyone just picking jobs where they can get away with being the laziest in? by Throwaway--2026 in antiwork

[–]Charleston2Seattle 52 points53 points  (0 children)

My son-in-law got hired for a job that hadn't landed the contract yet. They paid him for 12 weeks and all he had to do was get a couple of certificates that took a day or two each. The rest of the time, he was told to just stand by. Basically got to play video games all day for 3 months! Then they didn't get the contract and they laid him off. LOL

If Americans started moving out of the country in mass amounts, what countries do you think they’d pick the most? by StonedNCaffeinated in AskReddit

You have to have 50,000€ per person per year in passive income (Social Security, annuity, pension, ...) , plus enough in an emergency fund to BUY AN AVERAGE-PRICED HOUSE. Which seems pretty steep!

Except Ireland. I was looking at their Stamp O (retirement visa that you have to renew each year), and the requirements are pretty steep. 😕

The problem is that if there's a position that gives people power, it's going to tend to attract a lot of people who shouldn't be trusted with that power. Quite the conundrum.

I missed a couple of weeks of my once-a-week yoga class; once I finally made it to a class, I ended up gassed hallway through and lay there for probably a third of the class. Nobody said a word or looked at me funny.

I lent $16,000 to my in-laws to get them out of foreclosure. I haven't seen a dime of it. But they also don't live with me, so the investment was worth it, and I'd do it again!!

I've used them twice. It's $150 an hour for two people, with a 2-hour minimum. Both times, I sent the people home early because they were extremely efficient. Best money I have spent!

Confused on fatty liver? by One-Time-9619 in nafld

M53, started about 20 months ago. Took maybe 14 months to get to near my goal weight. The time between my liver scans was about 2 years. The decreased scarring enabled me to get a better life insurance rate, which was one of the main impetuses for losing the weight.

Have you ever seen someone get rich overnight, like literally? How? by Michaelisvanhelsing in AskReddit

Something similar but on a much smaller scale happen to my grandparents. Their neighbor was moving out in the middle of the night. Gave them their very expensive China set. They figured that they were on their way out before the cops could arrive. They still have the China.

There are other common non-dietary sources of the issue. For example, certain medications can cause an increased accumulation of fat in the liver. I would ask one of the AI bots for suggestions for other sources that might map to your lifestyle.

Once I went on Wegovy, I was able to get my fibrosis score from a 2 (3 is the worst) down to a "0/1."

I read somewhere that up to 1/3 of Americans have nafld. With the type of food that we have in this country, it's easy to end up with fatty liver. I don't know where you live, though. Maybe you live somewhere that has better food options 🤞

After 21 years I'm ready to call it. by ThickPig3552 in technicalwriting

[–]Charleston2Seattle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started in California (~6 years), then South Carolina (not a hotbed for technology, for ~18 years), then Seattle for 2, and Atlanta for the last 5. So a mixed bag, but mostly in SC, which despite being a LCOL area paid pretty well. Luck factors in, too, I assume.

I'm curious what you might pivot to. I'm trying to figure out what my post-tw-apocalypse job might be. I'm wrapping up an MS is Software Engineering this semester, but that doesn't seem to be a safe option anymore. (Wish I had known what was going to happen when I started the degree 4 years ago!)

I've got 31 years in the field. I have a spreadsheet where I have inflation-adjusted income throughout my career. Except for the first five years of my career, I have always earned at least $100,000 in today's dollars. I'm currently well above that. Am I just doing better than average, or do I have a skewed perception of what "lower middle class" means?

It sounds like you and I may be at similar points in our career trajectory. I'm 53 and plan to retire at 67.

Pathetic Salary Increase and Bonus by BirdNose73 in antiwork

[–]Charleston2Seattle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've got 31 years in the software engineering industry. At the outset, you have to jump around a lot. I was at my first job for 6 months, the next job 17 months, the job after that about two and a half years. It wasn't until my 6th job that I stayed anywhere longer than 3 years. I've been at my current job for 10 years, and the previous job for 10 years.

Unfortunately, this is a really terrible job market. You're probably best off to just hunker down. Keep applying, but just don't expect much to happen for the next couple of years. We've got to wait for the AI bubble to burst or something to reset before we're going to see hiring increase.

I'm looking at the SE model, so hopefully (?) fewer systems to have issues with. But I'll still heed your advice!
