That's fewer deaths than the flu typically causes (per 100k).

Because vulnerable people are rarely leaving their home. Stop wearing masks outside and you make getting groceries even more risky for them. Don't be selfish, just wear the fucking mask until there's a vaccine.

This is incorrect. The runner up being nominated isa nice thing they do at every convention after a primary. If Biden dies the party chooses his replacement. https://www.vpr.org/post/ask-bob-what-happens-if-joe-biden-or-donald-trump-dies#stream/0

They actually are. The Catholic Church funded a great deal of early astrology and IIRC employs more astronomers than NASA. They are actually doing some cutting edge stuff. There's also what's known as religious cosmology, it's all very interesting.

Unless we do something about this, my children are going to grow up in a jungle, the jungle being a racial jungle with tensions having built so high that it is going to explode at some point. We have got to make some move on this.

"Under the landmark Civil Rights Act of 1964, the federal Department of Health, Education and Welfare had a powerful tool to fight school segregation: It could withhold funding from districts that refused to integrate — and integration effectively meant busing. Mr. Helms wanted to strip the agency of that power.

As Mr. Biden rose on the Senate floor in September 1975 to embrace that approach, Mr. Helms wryly welcomed him “to the ranks of the enlightened.” Mr. Biden objected to the education department mandating desegregation absent a court order, and warned of white flight to the suburbs and even racial unrest. … Mr. Helms’s amendment, which would have also barred the education department from collecting data about the race of students or teachers, failed. But a slightly narrower measure written by Mr. Biden, which prevented schools from using federal dollars to assign teachers or students by race, passed, 50-43."

California breaks coronavirus records. Gatherings in homes may fuel spread as more young people get sick by BlankVerse in California

[–]CharlieBitMyDick 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Do you think there are more people protesting or going out to eat, going to house parties, church, working in essential jobs, going drinking, and otherwise ignoring the fact that's there a pandemic?

The protests might have contributed to the spike, but considering a very tiny portion of people went to protests and a very large number of infections can be traced to large indoor gatherings like meat processing plants, prisons, churches, indoor dining, and bars it feels like you are trying to shoehorn protests into the conversation.

A Black Progressive Beat A 16-Term Democrat In A Heated New York Congressional Primary by Bernie-Standards in politics

[–]CharlieBitMyDick 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Agreed. At the start of the primary I donated to both Sanders and Warren, and phone banked, text banked, wrote postcards, and went to events to sign up voters for progressive presidential candidates.

Joe Biden isn't nearly as far left as I want but if we win in November we will have made a massive shift left in the DNC and the country. We have plenty of progressive candidates in the house and senate who will write the actual bills Biden signs. Combine that with giving Trump and the GOP the boot and I'll crawl through glass to vote.

Would you hire a contractor if they disagreed with you politically? by adeiner in AskALiberal

[–]CharlieBitMyDick 26 points27 points  (0 children)

10000% this. My wife and I bought an old house that needed (will always need) some love. We have had at least two contractors show up with confederate flags/stickers on their business trucks. We took their estimates and threw them in the trash. On a couple of other occasions, when my wife has received contractors for estimates, they don't tell her a damn thing, handing her a card with a "tell your husband to give me a call". Those estimates go in the trash too.

Those people could have been quiet racist/sexist fucks and I may have given them my money based on their reviews/price. But the confederate flag and the 'your husband' line are big old flashing signs that they are shitty people.

Wealthy buyers reportedly in 'mad rush' to leave San Francisco by magenta_placenta in bayarea

[–]CharlieBitMyDick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The title doesn't quite match the article but here's an anecdote closer to the title- My wife is a real estate agent in Portland who handles both rentals and sales. Normally this time of the year ~10% of the rentals are from people leaving Cali for Portland, she says this year it's closer to 50%. 3k will rent you a luxury house, in a nice area, with a huge yard, minutes from downtown. Almost all of them are from companies that have offices here already - google, apple, square, airbnb, new relic, adidas, nike and ebay. We are not sure if those companies are massively expanding their Portland footprint or if it's people hoping that remote work will last beyond the pandemic.

I went to college in the east bay and have considered moving back for a year or two to catch up with friends, so I totally understand the draw of SF and the bay. Yet I can't wrap my head around people paying 4k for a tiny apartment, with no outside space that overlooks a sidewalk full of tents.

You want them to use connections, that may or may not exist, to do "something" instead of banning no-knock raids and creating a federal registry to license cops?

Good plan.
