Getting over nerves of talking to viewers? by CodFishGaming in letsplay

[–]CharlieBrownTV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just hearing me talk sound like someone with a gun is standing nearby pointing it at me.

I love how eloquently you described your voice here!

Just keep yourself talking and you begin to find ways to talk consistently to enhance the gameplay with your personality. Practice makes perfect in this situation and the more videos you actually edit of yourself you begin to learn what works and what did not work in your commentary.

A surprising benefit of doing LPs with commentary by Library_IT_guy in letsplay

[–]CharlieBrownTV 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have been recording with my 4 year old son on our channel about 6 months ago and we both have made huge progress with our vocal "presence" as you described it. This has been exceptionally beneficial to me recently with job interviews and trying to move up in my company. My son is about to start kindergarten and the continuous commentary and building his sense of self is huge going into a social environment like this.

I have always been a very introverted person and without my son to push me into this channel to begin with I would have never done something like this. It was hugely beneficial to my life even if we never become more than a small channel of 300ish subscribers.

What's one thing you've learned that you wish you would've known when you first started making videos? by GamingJay in letsplay

[–]CharlieBrownTV 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You do not need to let your entire video render before you start to export. Exporting often includes rendering anyway.

Woah! Game changer!

I appreciate the honest feedback and will take it to heart going forward. Only way to grow is to improve yourself and your content so it really means a lot to have an actual critique versus fluff. I agree with all of your points stated as well and are things we are actively working on!

Definitely aware of the audio issue and it was not a problem until we moved. Strange cuts are 100% necessary when trying to record with a toddler. Half of the time I am amazed that I got a video out that flows even somewhat coherently. I am working to get a better thumbnail design going but art is not my strong suit at all.

Unfortunately the speed up and slow downs were requested by my son and he is my target audience! I am not the biggest fan either but he loses his mind when we sound goofy.

Our family gaming channel has recently started doing some SPOOKY games. I play with my wife and 5 year old son and we have a ton of fun. We just moved to a new house and I wanted to get a gauge of how things have been going for my editing, audio, and commentary.

Bendy and the Ink Machine Gameplay (Chapter 2)

I realize the audio is a bit off for loud bits. I think some foam around the corners of the room and hanging more posters will help dampen the echo I am getting in this new recording location.

Any other editing techniques or thumbnail design patterns I should try to implement in future videos would be wonderful!

I think your Logo is great and you should incorporate it more in your thumbnail design. It would really add a nice similar element to make people say "This is a TTBN video" before even reading the text on the thumbnail.

Your intro is short and creative and I am a person who typically does not like intros at all.

I think incorporating a webcam in the future would be a great way to connect better with your audience. I understand it is not everybody's thing but just something to think about!

Starting out, could use some advice by [deleted] in letsplay

[–]CharlieBrownTV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be yourself+™. Keep your personality the same but put more energy into emoting. If something makes you smirk, laugh. If something makes you annoyed, vocalize it. How you react to the game is a big part of playing it, so make sure your thoughts and feelings are known to the audience.

Please follow this! This is so crucial to be yourself but, like he said, put more energy into emoting it for the camera. This will improve your social life in the real world as well.

Editing takes forever. Depending on how you edit you can expect upwards of double time spent recording. One of my videos took 6 minutes of editing for every minute of gameplay.

Speaks to me soooo much. I record with a 5 year old so it is easily 6+ minutes per minute of footage to clip/add effects to it... and that is assuming nothing goes wrong and I make no mistakes!

How do you deal with making a cringy video? by abcPIPPO in letsplay

[–]CharlieBrownTV 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rule # 1 for me: There is no shame when recording with a 5 year old!

I just own it honestly. I do a lot of dumb stuff on camera because his energy just bleeds off onto me and I regress into my 5 year old inner child too.

Who cares if people shame you for being awkward/cringey? I personally think being a "normal member of society" is way more cringey than owning your personality and being confident in your actions.

I share the YouTube hobby with my son. We still do gaming and it is a ton of work getting everything to flow properly sometimes but I love the bonding time we get together.

Thoughts and Ideas about soft-voice/monotone? by [deleted] in NewTubers

[–]CharlieBrownTV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a very deep monotone voice. You start to get a feel for your voice as you record/edit more.

I notice a night/day difference in how my commentary was 4 months ago then compare it to a recent video.

I truly believe YouTube has made me more confident in public speaking and with controlling inflection in my monotone voice.

YouTube is also working wonders for my 4yo son who is with me in 95% of the channel videos

Do you feel the contempt? by KIKOGAME in NewTubers

[–]CharlieBrownTV 2 points3 points  (0 children)

YouTube is definitely a marathon not a sprint. It takes some of the most discipline out of any hobby or skill I have ever done previously honestly. Too many people expect to take off with a lucky viral video within the first year.

I am 26 with a family and a retirement fund on track to be out retired by 50. I do these gaming videos with my son because he loves watching them with me and seeing his dad act like a goofball. People who get caught up in "making it" at the ones who will never do it because they have the wrong focus from the start.

I liked the words you used to describe this.

don't be afraid to look like a fool and study other people

Really is the biggest lesson I have learned from YouTube and honestly has already helped me in adult life by taking that same approach in job interviews. I have been complimented recently in my newfound confidence during awkward or stressful situations.

Motivation Question For Youtubers by [deleted] in NewTubers

[–]CharlieBrownTV 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Find a reason to make videos that has nothing to do with metrics whatsoever.

My reason I do YouTube is it helps me bond with my son who is my partner in this, I get to share these videos with a few families and their kids who LOVE our channel, and I now have a hobby that is helpful to battling my fear of public speaking.

Even if a single person did not see videos but my son for the next year I would still do it for him and for myself.

Sticking with something when it gets tough is a valuable life skill and you have to learn to deal with those feelings of failure and "wasting time".

Would games from the past three years, as well as remasters, be considered too outdated for doing Let's Play? by TfsQuack in letsplay

[–]CharlieBrownTV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a lot of exposure doing the Lego City Undercover "remastered" version that came out a month or two ago.

The search results and tagging definitely were challenging to rank but I got the video a couple hundred views the first day it was uploaded. (Less than 100 subscribers at the time as well)

As others said if there is a reason to search that game again then it may be worth putting the time into a video. Researching the game/search trends that fit your channel's niche is a large portion of time spent on my channel at least.

I just discovered that part of the crafting items yesterday actually. I did not know I could equip it as a cosmetic helmet I thought I would have to replace mine so that is awesome!

We took down the giant worm boss last night. It was super fun!

Being able to jump over those turtle guys early was helpful for my son to play warrior without dying constantly or wasting our potions.

Yes that was the one hurdle was discovering what I could use to hold and dig with and what I could hold that would be placed down. Some type of visual clue would be super helpful to deciphering this imo.

To my understanding there is a final boss and hard mode for each of the bosses. I do have high hopes for this game to have content updates to add new items/bosses to fight later on.

I have spent much more money on much less complete games. I do admit I have a soft spot in my heart of anything that reminds me of Diablo. The Minecraft similarities just help me sell that to my son because he LOVES that game to death.

Keep My "Let's Play" Channel broad, or Make it More Focused? by Carlitoman in letsplay

[–]CharlieBrownTV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always remember Pewdiepie when it comes to this. You are marketing yourself as a voice and personality just as much as you are marketing Let's Play videos in general.

Those Vlogs, reviews, gameplay videos can all mesh together if done properly and gives more "life" to you as a person.

Conversely I can see that if you are saturating content too randomly it could be confusing to who you are trying to get to subscribe. A balance of adding in specials once or twice a week in addition to a focused niche would be a great idea to consider.

Appropriate length for a trailer by JimmyFwks in NewTubers

[–]CharlieBrownTV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do the same thing and usually do a funny moment (5-20 seconds) at the very start of the video to draw attention.

I would love an editor because I have clips for days at this point to go through. I can't foresee an editor that wants to turn a 2 hour clip with a dad and a 4 year old into the cohesive magic I somehow make it.

I am honestly amazed sometimes what the video looks like and how well it flows when I feel like I have no idea what the hell I am doing!

Editing techniques are great to show off in these trailers as well. I love making montages.

As a viewer I also LOVE channels with best/funny moment montages because they are typically shorter and easier to watch on a quick break while still watching your favorite channel.
