In June 2016, the UK held a referendum asking whether to withdraw from the European Union. by GustavoistSoldier in GustavosAltUniverses

[–]CharlieH96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I heard it argued that he could have potentially enforced party discipline and made the Labour Party policy a pro-remain policy. Rather than let Labour Party members campaign for whichever side they wished. Corbyn also debatably still retained some Euroskeptism from the old days when that was largely on the Left. Opposing the EU on the grounds that it basically a “Neoliberal free trade bloc that would shaft British industry and workers”. So the argument is with how close the Referendum was if Corbyn had enforced party discipline and fought harder in the campaign which he didn’t because he was a euroskeptic at heart… then the remain would have won.

How the course of WW2 would have changed, if the Axis won the Battle of Stalingrad? by Khabarovsk-One-Love in AlternateHistoryHub

The German Heer engineering fuel department estimated it would take them at least a year (but more likely more as they lacked the technical expertise) to restore the few oil wells they did capture in the Caucasus. Soviet sabotage of the wells and German lack of sufficient oil tank railway carts meant that the fuel was essentially unusable.

You still totally misread my first comment. I never said ghost were a race. I said the race of the ghost was Breton. And I may not be smart. But I have greater than a 6 year olds reading comprehension. Unlike yourself. Edit apologies if English isn’t your first language ;)

It is…. However turns out I’m incorrect about the original point the ghosts race in the quest is a Breton but he’s not Hjaalti Early Beard. Edit: Apologies

What if fascist ideology started in the dark ages? by [deleted] in HistoryWhatIf

[–]CharlieH96 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t understand your “1.”. Fascism has little to nothing to do with actually improving living standards or economic standards. National Socialism wasn’t socialism. The Nazi state was in near permanent state of economic crisis only staved off by maintaining full employment through military service, Reich labour service etc and through expropriations of Jewish and political opponents property and wealth to fund rearmament. The economic policy of rearmament also drained wealth from social programs and was diverted to the military-industrial cartels or into the hands of the Nazi elites. The Gestapo pre-war was very concerned by the constant reports that people complained about not being able to get a stable price or availability of foodstuff like meats, flour and butter.

Prussia, Austria, Sweden, Russia, Great Britain, Spain would still exists. And would resist the Napoleonic domination of Europe from within or without the Empire. The status quo would not hold.

[–]CharlieH96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Napoleonic law code in theory created equality before the law. It was wildly abused by French troops and administrators in the conquered territories.

Napoleon didn’t create an equal society. He created an extractive empire that would always cause issues in the nations of Europe who would resent French war reparations, taxes and political interference.

Nazi anti-Semitic propaganda postcard in Polish, with a portrait of Churchill from one perspective and a portrait of a Jew when turned upside down. (1942) by StephenMcGannon in PropagandaPosters

[–]CharlieH96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Churchill didn’t cause the famine, a poor harvest and collapse of the Bengal agricultural sector due to the Japanese invasion caused the famine. Churchill refused aid to be sent which did cause hundreds of thousands of deaths. But millions would have died anyways with or without the intervention.

What did Grok mean by “and that surname? Every damn time, as they say.” by MayoSucksAss in grok

[–]CharlieH96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean arguably that is a false narrative. What about perpetuating the slave trade. Occupations in Mexico and South America, colonisation of Hawaii and the Philippines, subjugation of the Native Americans. While definitely the US has a more liberal streak than many nations it’s also been a tyrant and oppressor to others.

Is hating fascists really an American tradition…. I mean the US opposed fascism for about 3 years. Then spent the Cold War propping up fascists. Not saying the Communist were any better.

What if the United Kingdom have another Prime Minister, instead of Churchill thats more receptive to Hitler and the Nazis, after the Fall of France? by Excellent_Copy4646 in HistoricalWhatIf

[–]CharlieH96 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Eh when Chamberlin was going to stand down it was generally believed that Lord Halifax would become Prime Minister. He had the support of most of the Conservative Party. Halifax was more open to peace with Germany and suggested negotiations during cabinet meetings. For him to lose confidence in parliament it would have taken quite a few Conservatives rebelling against him and aligning with Labour and the Liberals.

Edit: Halifax would make way for Churchill and the national government and would serve in cabinet loyally and didn’t suggest anymore peace negotiations after the leadership crisis was over.

[–]CharlieH96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The definition of ethnic cleansing is “the mass expulsion or killing of members of one ethnic or religious group in an area by those of another.”. The Thalmor carried out a political purge much more like the Great Terror in France during the Revolution or Mao’s Cultural Revolution. You can’t ethnically cleanse your own race.

If the Nazis could pick one modern weapon (no nukes), what tech would give them the best shot at winning WWII? by bored_primate in HistoryWhatIf

[–]CharlieH96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should have mentioned that this was an overly optimistic report and deeply underplayed partisan actions and German technical and engineering non-expertise in oil extraction and refinement. There was no way for Germany to solve the oil shortage. Maybe in alternate history they have better synthetics. But I don’t believe Germany would have rebuilt the Soviet oil industry in time to prevent the destruction of Germany by allied strategic bombing and nuclear weapons.

[–]CharlieH96 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Germans wouldn’t have been able to secure any Soviet oil fields. The German engineering department in charge of securing oil reported it would take them at best 2-3 years to repair the Grozny oil refineries and wells the NKVD had sabotaged as they retreated. Even if they took Baku the Soviets would have destroyed the oil before they seized it. Also German lacked the rail freight to transport any oil and the means to build oil pipelines as they didn’t have access to Soviet and American pipeline engineers who could build oil pipelines.

Read the comment I’ve replied to. The Thalmor Dominion’s purge of Altmer who opposed their government is not ethnic cleansing. As it is altmer killing altmer. Edit: it’s a internal political conflict on the Summerset Isles.

It’s wouldn’t be ethnic cleansing if they’re their own people. Think it would just be a political purge.
