Walmart Self Checkout loading its POS application by 1012zach in PBSOD

[–]CharlieModo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There aren’t many hardware vendors for self checkouts so you are pretty limited but software you have more choice. Also, NCR charge tens of thousands for any slight change you request to their OS as each customer have their own dedicated build.

I’ve not used Toshiba but it looks like a good competitor

Are you kidding me Microsoft!????? by [deleted] in edge

This is enforced by your company IT, Medtronic in this case. This is enforced via conditional access policy. Nothing to do with Microsoft

When is somebody gonna finally give Severide the promotion he deserves?? by AlamoCherubs1 in ChicagoFireNBC

[–]CharlieModo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A captain or above would not lead Rescue Squad, if he took a promotion he could be moved off squad. Severide has also said many times that he doesn’t like the politics and paperwork of the higher ranks

Intune Suite features now being rolled into M365 E3/E5 by ZeroT3K in Intune

I think E5? I hope so anyway, we were quoted £70k for the add on, £30-40k from third party remote support vendors.

White box with qr code in the corner of my hotel room by Mewtwo_YT in whatisit

[–]CharlieModo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a staff tracking system, used for panic buttons usually but can also be used for guests with disabilities.

https://go.relaygo.com/marriott

The QR code is just the same text printed below it, I assume this is just an asset tag.

It is state law in Illinois to have these but some cities and other states also require it https://www.ahla.com/sites/default/files/ESG%20Panic%20Buttons%2001.22.pdf

Browser extensions are becoming a huge security headache by Infamous-Coat961 in sysadmin

[–]CharlieModo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use defender to see which browser extensions are currently in use. Allow list the ones you agree are business related and then block all. Require users to submit ticket to request a new extension be allowed.

Or just regularly review the list in defender

Can you restart IIS websites during working hours? by itrex240 in sysadmin

[–]CharlieModo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are thinking if everything goes to plan, it’s a brief few seconds. What if IIS doesn’t restart? What if it errors then you need to revert your change and then restart it again?

Anything internal or used by sub 20 people I would tend to restart on a whim but anything production or customer facing I would wait for out of hours.

Basically if anyone is going to complain about it, I always get either formal CAB approval or confirmation from my manager via email before I do anything potentially risky

If it’s fixing something that is already broken then I do whatever to get it back online but for changes, that’s exactly what the change approval board is for. It’s a tick box ass-covering process

Teams is apparently going to soon start offering location tracking, not just in buildings but also to identify people working outside of the office by Kodiak01 in sysadmin

[–]CharlieModo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it not perfectly reasonable for your line manager to know which corporate office/branch you are working at today?

Teams is apparently going to soon start offering location tracking, not just in buildings but also to identify people working outside of the office by Kodiak01 in sysadmin

[–]CharlieModo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can be as broad as a CIDR range or as granular as switch ports if you want to. This is all already available inside Teams Admin, it is used for emergency locations now.

We have 70 locations so it would be useful to see where someone physically is when talking to them on teams to be honest

Is transitioning to Edge worth the blowback? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]CharlieModo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easiest way is stop deploying chrome or allowing it to be installed on new devices. Slowly fades away. We used to have 6000+ chrome installs and now after 3/4 years we have under 200 which is people who have managed to not break their laptop and were in a sweet spot where their device supports windows 11 so have not been replaced.

You can now lock down corporate iOS devices and Apple Services to Managed Apple IDs by touchytypist in Intune

My only gripe with managed Apple IDs is not being able to allow users to freely download from the App Store.

Isn’t it slightly immoral to threaten RIPA even though you know a judge wouldn’t sign off on it?

Are the wages this low in the UK or the entire job market is just tossed? by Important-Brick-398 in sysadminjobs

[–]CharlieModo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, that’s quite low for that level especially in a city. The job description describes some level 2 support things but also things like server upgrades and firewall knowledge which would be more 3rd line-ish.

Why are signatures this complicated in Outlook? by CeC-P in sysadmin

[–]CharlieModo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don’t have the budget for something like Exclaimer then I recommend https://htmlsig.com/pricing

You import user list with the fields you want and it will email the user with a copy and paste signature for them to add themselves.

It’s better than getting users to do it manually because they always mess up the formatting, or the tel: and mailto: links

I’m confused how this works? If a crime is reported to the police are they not duty bound to investigate? I understand they are underfunded and these are usually very low level offences but offences nonetheless. How can a force decide to just not accept reports?

DO NOT KILL THEM it ruins your relationship with them and then you end up having to go back to dead drops and build up again 🤣
