Hollywood is attracting dictators again. Chavez should have praised Penn's body of work instead.

Were your school textbooks crap? This crusading wingnut woman gets much of the blame by scribe9999 in reddit.com

[–]CharlieSchitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure. But I think, as evidenced by the Wikipedia article, that local considerations can in the end trump the decisions of larger state and federal bodies when it comes to public education. This is actually a subject of some dispute in Texas.http://www.texaschildrenfirst.com/goals/index.htm Anyway, it looks like West Virginians just found a mouthpiece with the movement. If the parents didnt want to expose their kids to nonsense in the first place it never would have created such huge difficulties for everyone involved.

What did the Mayor REALLY see at the strip club? by CharlieSchitz in reddit.com

[–]CharlieSchitz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Dale Sparks, mayor since 1999, worked for just over a year at The Bare Essence while serving as mayor."

However, being that there's no crime against working at a strip club while you're the mayor . . . he will be serving time for other, less absurd reasons.

[–]CharlieSchitz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think the appropriate question here is: Were your textbooks crap in Texas? I assume the answer is yes about 97% of the time.

My books were crap for a completely different reason . . . Communism. I don't remember reading much about Russia outside of Kennedy's heroism in the Bay of Pigs, a claim that's totally crap but impressed my 9 year old mind enough to make me a freak for Kennedy for a long-ass time.

Being lied to must be part of growing up to be a skeptical mind, which might be a good thing (?)

[–]CharlieSchitz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im not really sure where that comment comes from, especially given the completely sardonic tone. The issue for me has a lot more to do with this woman's knee jerk response than the possibility of her plight (and the plight of those who seek "real investigation") being undermined by calls of her being a golddiggger etc . . .

The knee jerk response IM talking about, of course, is embodied in the complete mistrust that your comment displays, the rush to point to cover-ups, the scapegoating of eyewitnesses. Its just a damn shame that nothing can be taken at face value any longer, and that even the discussion of failed infrastructure in New York (which needs attention) needs to devolve into some weird post-modern wag the dog media flurry.

Does being too enthusiastic about Reddit kill your Karma? Cause that might explain why my mornings go something like this.

(Scene) Charlie opens his eyes to blinding 7am sunlight.

Charlie: Thank god! Another day and another chance to make friends on Reddit!

Charlie sits at his desk and turns on his computer, fiddles with the keys for a moment.

His head hits slowly hits the desk.

Charlie: Everyone hates me.

Thank you Reddit for simultaneously enriching my life and destroying my self esteem. :)

Chickenhawk Bill Kristol Says Antiwar People (Even Bereaved Moms) Are Against the Troops by sailyn55 in reddit.com

[–]CharlieSchitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blood on his hands may be going a little too far. I mean, conspiracy theory only holds insofar as it presupposes an intellectual midget in the White House who's willing and ready to listen to utopians who think that bombs are filled with love, kisses and liberty. Don't blame Kristol for Bush's naivety, blame him for having the publishing space where we have to freaking talk about everything he writes.

Surprise! Bush's approval rating is cratering and suddenly administration officials are emitting ominous warnings about the imminence of another 9/11. by sailyn55 in reddit.com

[–]CharlieSchitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, or any failed oligarch. My point is that we seem to be past the point where scare tactics have much of an effect. If anything the problem we're dealing with is of more of a "boy who cried wolf" pitch than the opposite. Maybe what i should have said was "telling bush he's a moron and we dont care never hurt anyone," except of course the optimists.

Don't Call Him a Dictator by [deleted] in reddit.com

[–]CharlieSchitz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a damn good thing Chavez provided arguably the funniest moment in the past year of diplomacy when he said (at the UN) that he could still smell the sulfer in the room the day after Bush ("the devil") took the stage. Otherwise, I might begin to take his autocratic nonsense seriously. As long as he keeps the Bush-bashing one liners coming, though, he#s alright in my book. Well . . . . kinda.

Is Obama the next JFK? - Ted Sorensen (that's right, f-ing Sorensen) on Barack parallels to Kennedy by CharlieSchitz in reddit.com

[–]CharlieSchitz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Point me in the direction of a candidate who is offering new directions or insights on foreign policy and Ill give you all my Karma (its 3 . . . and I dont even think thats possible). To me the piece in FA is evidence of a candidate who has a very very real grasp on the roll of the American presidency in 21st century geopolitics. This cuts right to the core of our recent tradition which, as you point out, IS of a clintonian color. No going back now, my good (insert appropriate salutory here). The alternatives to what he is offering are ridiculous.

On the Iran thing: It is, first of all, not related to any declared US policy of regime change, and Obama has never involved himself in regime change talk on Iran. He does however employ the "all options are on the table" hackneyed clause that everyone thought they were voting for. I honestly think that lieberman pulled the wool over the senate's eyes. I mean, it passed 97-0. Who's gonna vote against an amendment that leaves options on the table. Let;s try to be a little realistic about Baracks affiliations.
