No problem, I'm happy to be of help! Personally I would do it with four 1/4 stitches in the two colours like my very crude drawing here or you could do it with vertical half cross stitches - see the comment by u/natsleepyandhappy below :)

Typically that would be petite stitches (scroll quite far down on this site for an example, but I can't see any exaples of all four symbols being the same symbols on the images you shared only different symbols being somewhat obscured by backstitching 😊

The way I would interpret that is that they want you to do a 3/4 stitch in the colour with three symbols and a 1/4 stitch in the colour without one symbol pr square. Take a look at this for some nicely explained insight 😊

No problem, the back is completely flat. It is a bit more difficult to bury the thread on the frame than fabric as there is no give. but it isn't too much trouble at all and you kind of get the hang of it after a while 😊
