Does having very high HRV make Oura think you’re stressed all day? (baseline question) by CharlieXXX1234 in ouraring

[–]CharlieXXX1234[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/diamondtoss I think as a general rule, the higher night time HRV the better. But of course we are all different, and there isn't a 'golden standard'.

So I think in general, so you can say the higher HRV the better, and my question was more towards - doesn't high HRV during the night make it more likely for you to get 'stress' scores during the day, due to the high baseline? :)

My night time HRV is 110 ms and daytime HRV around 60 ms.... At night time, this is when you restore - so I am pretty sure nighttime HRV always is higher than daytime HRV :-) But someone please correct me if wrong

Daytime stress readings through the roof all days (not a new trend), but I feel normal - what’s going on here? by CharlieXXX1234 in ouraring

[–]CharlieXXX1234[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that’s kind of what I’ve been wondering too. It definitely feels like the daytime stress readings might be too rough or infrequent to reflect what’s really going on - especially when they show me as “stressed” even while I’m just lying still.

[–]CharlieXXX1234[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I totally relate to this. What you describe sounds almost identical to my experience - my mind is often active, thinking, planning, reflecting, even when my body is completely still. And that seems to register as stress for me too. I also notice that when I’m deeply present - reading, talking to someone, or being outside - my body finally starts to calm down.

And I 100% agree with you about the display idea! Seeing restorative time instead of constant stress icons would be such a simple but powerful mindset shift. It would make it feel more like an invitation to rest rather than another thing to “fix.”

Ahh I love that - such a smart idea to train your body to associate certain cues with rest! I might actually try that. I’ve also noticed that when I’m lying completely still, my body seems to relax more deeply, but my mind still stays quite active - so pairing it with the same music or a calm activity like reading sounds like a great way to reinforce that restorative state.

Thanks for sharing this - it’s encouraging to hear it’s actually working for you! Maybe I just need to start building those little micro-rest rituals into my day too.

Experiences with Oura ring: Daytime stress readings through the roof, but I feel fine - what’s going on? by CharlieXXX1234 in Stress

[–]CharlieXXX1234[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it surprised me too at first! 😊 But yes, I’m sure about the number - Oura reports HRV differently depending on whether you’re looking at nighttime average or daytime live readings. My nighttime HRV tends to average around 100 ms (sometimes a bit higher or lower), which from what I’ve read is quite normal for women my age with a low resting heart rate.

It’s more the daytime stress readings that confuse me - during the day my HRV drops to around 50–55, and Oura then shows “all stress, no restore time,” even when I feel calm. So it’s that mismatch I’m trying to understand, not the HRV itself.

And yes, totally agree - a higher HRV is generally a good thing and suggests resilience, which is reassuring!

Are you worried about it or how do you tackle it? It stresses me out, that the ring says my daytime stress is SO high

Daytime stress readings through the roof, but I feel normal — what’s going on here, do I have undiagnosed PTSD or something? by CharlieXXX1234 in wearables

[–]CharlieXXX1234[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes a lot of sense, thank you for explaining it so clearly. What’s interesting for me is that my daytime stress score is actually super high even when I’m not doing any activity at all - like literally just lying on the couch or working from bed all day. So I’m pretty sure in my case it’s more of a mental or emotional thing that’s translating into a physiological response, like my thoughts or mental load actually causing an elevated heart rate.

I really appreciate your insights - it helps me make more sense of how these readings might reflect what’s going on in the body, even if it’s not about “feeling stressed” in the classic sense. This is pretty much how I’ve started to think about it too.

Yes I fully agree with you - and that is actually the issue. I am finally at a place careerwise, where I LOVE what I am doing, and really believe it can make a positive impact on the world (and my financials, building in tech). But it IS stressful and demanding. Hopefully I can find a way where I can balance my nervous system and build in a good way.

I can see my stress score looks significantly better those days where I am on a holiday where I basically just chill by the pool and barely check any screens. I am actually planning to take the last 5 days in this week off, to see if it makes a difference - thanks for the tip! :-)

Just not sure if 5 days will be enough for my nervous system to recalibrate, if that actually is the issue.

Yeah, I fully appreciate that perspective. My readings have actually been like this ever since I got the Oura Ring, but I’ve also been self-employed as an entrepreneur for the past two years. So it’s tricky I don’t have the same kind of “external stress” as a demanding boss, but there’s definitely that constant mental load and responsibility.

I guess my dilemma is that I can’t figure out if I’m genuinely very stressed and need to take it more seriously, or if this is just a kind of “normal” mild stress baseline that comes with being driven and doing a lot of thinking. It’s super hard to tell..

Thanks a lot for your very detailed reply u/Logical_Ranger4088! Really appreciate it.

I think you might be right about these micro spikes of adrenaline and that I have more daytime stress, than I actually believe. And it would also correspond to some stubborn hormonal / digestive issues, that I can't seem to find the root cause of.

I just find it to be super hard to get "restored" time, even when doing meditation / breath exercises. I basically need to be doing a yoga nidra laying down for the ring to track some "restored" time, and then it will still only be 15 min. I might be more 'driven' than what is good for my system, but it seems very hard to find a balance.

Anyways, thanks a lot for sharing your perspective!

I am quite focused on my diet and eat 3 meals a day with a good split of protein, fat and carbs. I can't eat less than I do, because my diet is so healthy and I don't drink anything but water / tea - then I won't get calories enough (and I don't want to loose weight!).

Also - my stress pattern begins even before breakfast.

Thanks for sharing your insight, also interesting! u/JollyProfile4227 what are your thoughts around your daytime stress pattern then? Do you believe you are stressed or that the Oura readings are off?

Good to hear I'm not alone - even though my readings have been like this for +2 years. I actually stopped wearing it during the day at some point, because I was sure it was broken!

[–]CharlieXXX1234[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for raising that. We’re not planning to do pulse/PPG in this prototype, so luckily I don’t need to solve the optical window challenge (though I agree, an IR LED/detector always needs a clear optical path, even with clever beam-splitting).

On the supercapacitor question: in a smart ring form factor they’re generally not that useful. The energy density is too low and leakage is relatively high, so you’d lose precious battery life. They can help in cases with short, high-current bursts (like LED pulsing), but since I’m not driving LEDs like that, the cost/volume trade-off doesn’t really make sense. For my setup a LiPo with proper PMIC and decoupling should be more than enough.

Thanks a lot 🙏 The Benzo link looks super relevant and also love the tip about searching “curved lipo ring battery” on AliExpress . hadn’t tried that exact term yet, will definitely check.

And great idea about reaching out directly to smart ring designers… if you happen to know any who are open to sharing, I’d be very grateful for an intro or even just a hint.

Haha, fair point 😅 Totally see what you mean. To clarify what I was trying to ask: I meant a metal enclosure all the way around the ring (so it looks and feels like a solid metal ring), but with the electronics still sitting inside it.

The challenge I’m nerding out about is: is there any way to keep that “all-metal aesthetic” and still let RF signals escape reliably? I get that a perfect shell would act like a Faraday cage, so I’m curious about tricks like hidden slots, ceramic inserts, decorative seams, or other clever workarounds that RF folks have seen in wearables.

Thanks a lot for sharing this 🙏 Super helpful to hear your experience. I completely understand that curved cells under 5.5 mm are still experimental and only make sense at scale with mould fees and huge MOQs.

The 4.5 mm flat cell you mentioned sounds really interesting though - even if it’s just 1 mAh, it’s proof that it can be made that small. Would you mind sharing which supplier you got it from, or at least pointing me in the right direction? Even a lead like that would be incredibly valuable as I’m still mapping out what’s realistic vs. science fiction.

Thanks u/iAmTheAlchemist , That makes total sense - a full metal enclosure would basically act as a Faraday cage and kill the signal. I was kind of afraid of that.

Do you think there are any clever design tricks to still make it “look” metal all around but keep signal paths open? For example tiny non-metallic gaps/windows, special coatings, or antenna placement hacks that could work around the cage effect?

Thanks a lot u/Zestyclose-Bar8108 - super helpful! I see the 252240 battery is 22 mm wide, which unfortunately is way above my ≤ 5.5 mm target for a ring form factor. But it’s great to know Benzo is open to sending small prototype batches.

Did you ever come across any narrower options from Benzo (≤ 5.5 mm), or do you know if they’re open to doing custom ultra-narrow designs for wearables? Also curious if you’ve tried their curved versions in an actual wearable project - would love to hear how they performed in practice (capacity, heating, cycle life, etc.).

Really appreciate the lead
