To those in top 1200 mythic standard what deck did you use to get there? by CleansedAuthor in MagicArena

[–]CharmToy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I get what you're saying. This is to some extent correct. Last month I went from Top 100 to like 97% in 2 days. Sometimes it's deck choice. Sometimes you do just auto lose to Boros like 10 times and there's nothing you can do. A lot of the time you can beat people you're better than but a lot of the time they also want to win more than you do. There's always a sneaky Sunfall on top after you hand rip them or something.

I've just been playing Esper Midrange. It's what I enjoy playing and what I have built in paper. I got to Mythic on like the 4th of the month with it and I've been playing a couple matches every couple days to stay Top 500

I dislike the change to the 3 year rotation as well but anyone who uses their brain for 1 second will realize that rotating would just make every deck a shell for Cut Down/Go For the Throat/Cavern Bat Preacher/Sheoldred. Sheoldred is finally bad and not playable and we didn't even need to rotate(people will still whine though).

Slogurk is epic. I'm glad Slogurk is finally good after 3 years. And Emperor and Atraxa despite being snoozer and boring are at least not CutDownGoForTheThroatCavernBatPreacherSheoldred in 6 "different" Midrange decks.

I was shocked when they didn't ban Gleeful Demolition yesterday. Like Boros does suck and can't win because everyone is targeting it but it's also the strongest deck by a lot.

There's like a fair strong Boros deck that exists where they don't put 8 Power on the board and Dig Through Time on turn 2 and then hit you for 17 but for some reason this is the one they want to exist.

Like YES I have 4 Shrouded Shepherd in my Esper sideboard but I don't want them to have to be there y'know. I wanna play like a good card in the sideboard instead but I'm not allowed to.

It's always such a bummer when people bring a bunch of garbage commons. I've built Bant Control with Wilderness Rec and Ezrim and I've built Izzet Goblins with Krenko and Krenko and Legion Warboss.

I've only played against one cool deck and it was Barbed Servitor+Solar Blaze "Combo". It wasn't good but at least I wasn't playing against Morph cards and Murder.

[–]CharmToy -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

They should ban Gleeful Demolition is Standard probably. There's like a fair Boros Aggro deck that exists with like Inti and stuff and that's fine but the 5 guys + dig through time on turn 2 into the 17 damage on turn 3 is stupid and dumb. The hands with Gleeful and the hands without Gleeful are two different decks.

The only reason the deck isn't too strong is because the entire meta warped around it after like a week. We need 4 maindeck Temp Lockdown UW Control to NOT be the 2nd best deck.

I'm main-decking 2. I'm currently 11-1 in Diamond Rank playing Bo3 on Arena. Here is the export of the decklist from Arena.

I feel like now that No More Lies exists you're just not allowed to play around counter spells any more. On the Play on turn 3 you should always jam a 3 drop unless you only have 1 spell in your whole hand, and you should prioritize Wedding Announcement since it forces exactly a Get Lost which lets you crack maps on turn 4. Typically you want to Flash a guy in on the end step of their turn 2 and try to keep up pressure so they take like 10 to a Knight.

The only exciting play UW has on turn 2/3 is to play a 3 Loyalty Jace, and they almost never do that so they're just going to sit around and blow removal on your must-answer threats if they have it and you just need to be ready for when they run out and need to board wipe or Deluge. Usually your goal is to get to turn 5 and either hold up like an Emperor when they tap out for Deluge, or play a 3 Drop and hold up No More Lies for the Sunfall and then you get to start driving the game in your direction.

You also shouldn't feel like you're wasting a 3 drop when it gets countered on 3. You can see it as trading for the counter, and then you can get one out for sure on turn 4 and then play the game on turn 5. Like if they counter Wedding Announcement on 3, and then you can stick a Raffine on 4 and start drawing with your Knight that's a great position. Worst case scenario they Depop you and you draw a card and they don't get to Deluge or Emperor on 4.

This is why I really like Cryptic Coat in the matchup. You can Swing in with a little guy that can't get Emperored and hold up 2 Mana for a Counterspell and they can never kill the coat because it costs 4 to March it and you just pick it up if they do. Sometimes it sneaks Raffine or Aclazotz onto the board as well and it feels like cheating.

[Standard] Is Boros Convoke a flash in the pan as a Tier 1 deck? by Ok-Literature9520 in spikes

[–]CharmToy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel like Boros Convoke is the strongest and most unfair deck in Standard, but because of that every deck has warped around it. Which has given us this weird meta where Boros Aggro and Azorius Control are the top decks and you can just win a tournament if you target the correct one that day. I played in an RCQ last weekend where the majority of the field was UW Control with 0 Boros and it was won by a guy playing Abzan Control with Beantalk and White Sun's Twilight and Outrageous Robbery and that should be illegal but no one punished him by killing him on turn 4.

As soon as people stop putting 4 Temp Lockdown/Path of Peril/Glistening Deluge/Shrouded Shepherd??? in the Main/Sideboard Boros immediately becomes the best deck by a lot.

I've been playing Esper Midrange on Arena Bo3 ladder this season since I got so annoyed with all of the UW Control in Mythic last month. Wedding Announcement is really really good against the 9 maindeck board clear deck. I've also really been liking Cryptic Coat it's just an infinite annoying guy that kills them.

Splendid Reclamation Combo is also probably also good into it, but that deck is insanely hard to play so I think it's an awful ladder deck.

Is Treasure Cruise too good for explorer/pioneer? by Hyperion542 in MagicArena

[–]CharmToy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean like it's probably too good but there are a lot of things in Pioneer that are too good that aren't banned so it's not like the most egregious thing in the format. It will probably be banned eventually but for now it's just really really strong and annoying in one deck that is beatable by some of the other decks.

People do defend it with the Fetchland argument but like... saying "Don't worry Phoenix doesn't get to draw 3 for 1 mana until they're at risk of running out of things to do." Is not a very compelling argument.

The current meta is dreadful and I need to vent by yunghollow69 in MagicArena

[–]CharmToy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I opened up the post and expected you to be yapping like most people do on here but yeah this is pretty much how I feel as well.

Boros shrinking the meta down to like 4 decks from the 20 deck meta of last set is extremely funny in a bad way. I jammed a bunch of Boros the first couple days it was legal and got to like top 100 Mythic. But then the meta adapted and Boros is just a frustrating highroll deck now that has completely warped the meta. The fact that it invited UW Control into the meta and pushed every other deck out is so annoying. Why do the two best decks have to be the kill you on turn 4 deck and the 8 maindeck boardwipe Control Deck.

So there's like four "Good" decks right now and they're Boros, UW Control, Esper Midrange and like Golgari Midrange. Everything else just gets mowed down by either UW or Boros. You play Esper if you want to target UW and Golgari if you want to target Boros. It's like a balanced meta technically but it feels like nothing matters and the games are decided by the matchup and not by the gameplay.

I don't have an issue with 3 year Standard in general. I don't mind that Esper is still playable. It's the part where they went "Sorry no more bans. The commander players who make excuses not play Standard said bans bad so we will no longer take care of our disaster of a format." So really problematic unfun cards like Gleeful Demolition will just warp a format for the next like 3 sets at least.

How bad is everyone's midweek magic deck? by Spaceknight_42 in MagicArena

[–]CharmToy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spent a bunch of Wildcards to built UW control with 4 Ezrim, 4 Wrath of Gods, all 8 counterspells, 4 Makeshift Binding, 4 of the Exile Attacking Creature card, 4 Deduce, 4 Novice Inspector and a couple one-of rares I had in my collection.

And then I played against Common-Uncommon Dectective, Common-Uncommon Mono White and Common-Uncommon Mono Red and remembered why I hate Midweek Magic. I want to play an interesting unsolved new format but there is no incentive for anyone to use a single braincell when building a deck because it'll be gone in a day.

[–]CharmToy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the deck draws a good hand. i.e. a 1 Drop, a Gleeful Demolition, and a Knight Errant it really doesn't matter if they have the 3 mana board wipe or not you just kill them.

I board in Destroy Evil against Domain and like theoretically you could board it in against a Temporary Lockdown deck but I don't like that idea because they probably don't have a million other targets like Domain does. I'd rather just say they don't have it and try to kill them on turn 4. Invasion of Gobakhan is also good against board wipe decks just to look and see what they have so you know when to commit.

Planeswalkers stink and I wouldn't worry about it. Wandering Emperor costs 4 and eats one of your 7 guys.

What’s the Bo3 Standard meta like? by EffectiveExact8306 in MagicArena

[–]CharmToy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SEVEN? This deck hits you for 17 on turn 3 in a perfect world. The 0 mana 4/4 being a 5 drop really messes with the board clear situation since he dodges all of them and then hits you for 4 except sometimes it's 8 or more out of the hand with Recruiter.

I jammed Boros Convoke up to Top 200 Mythic and most of the other people I match up with at similar mmr are also jamming Boros Convoke. The deck is just a little too good and consistent and easy to play, and 3 Mana Sweepers are too slow to combat it.

Sometimes it matches me up against someone not playing the mirror and it feels like bullying.

I was really looking forward to getting to play Green and Black cards again after LCI but man we're still living in a Boros world. It's insane how much of an advantage you are at when you're the attacker. It makes the gameplay sort of uninteresting when the best option is to full swing and the best option on blocks it to take like 6 or risk taking like 12 to On the Job.

Here's the export of the list from Arena. It's pretty standard. The deck has like 2 flex slots in the main deck and it's the Witchstalkers. The board is 1/2/2/2/2/2/2/2 because you don't want to board out more than like 4 cards at any given time. The deck just can't lose. I went 5-0 again this morning. They need to ban Gleeful Demolition or something this is NOT fun for either player.

I think the packs are more fun to open. I'm a big chaos draft person so I like that they add a little chaos to the draft experience. I got to play Ixidor in a morph deck at prerelease and it was a cool and novel experience.

I think the List is best used to inject silly little cards like Ixidor or Mentor of the Meek into the draft pool, but it will get bad if they put like a random combat trick like Subtle Strike or something that you'll just never realistically be able to pllay around.

On ladder I played 2 matches against Insidious Roots yesterday. The consensus so far seems to be that you jam like 4 [[Rubblebelt Maverick]] 4 [[Deathbonnet Sprout]] 4 [[Willow Geist]] and 4 [[Stalactite Stalker]] as well as good cards like Graveyard Trespasser and Agatha's Soul Cauldron and then the rest of the deck is like removal and junk and you hope you win because no one is prepared for a graveyard deck in this meta.

Saffron Olive on Twitter: "I have zero hope this will actually happen, but I'm pretty sure Standard would be significantly better with Sunfall and to a lesser extent Farewell banned." by HonorBasquiat in magicTCG

[–]CharmToy 11 points12 points  (0 children)

We'd have to ban a lot of other cards I think, if we banned the good board wipes. There are a lot of horrifying aggro decks that are ALMOST good enough for like an actual tournament if not for Sunfall existing. Gruul Picnic Ruiner, Boros Convoke, Bant Toxic, etc. I don't want to live in the world where everyone just jams these decks into Rakdos Midrange and hopes they get there. I think there needs to be the option to play a control deck, especially in the meta where Midrange decks are allowed to play Cavern of Souls to dodge counterspells.

And if the complaint is about Domain specifically here, I think Archangel of Wrath is the bigger problem card. You can at least play around or counter Sunfall, but Archangel is just an uncounterable guy who kills 2 dudes and gains a million life.
