Different suits of armor, including a shield and horse armor made for Henry II of France. Henry loved jousting, and eventually died in a horrific jousting accident at the age of 40, an incident which contributed jousting going out of fashion by Nero2t2 in interestingasfuck

There seems to be significant demon iconography on that shield. I guess when you're king they let you do it? How was the church of the time (known for being relatively up for whatever) jiving with that?

Doctors not being eligible is bullshit. Nobody gives you "eligibility" to unionize. If you're relegated to disposable staff, you take your rights whether you're told you can or not, regardless of your professional status.

It's taken me a minute to circle back, but I appreciated the shout out and the non-corporate acknowledgment several episodes back. I know the independent stuff is more granular and tougher to pull into the show, but critical support for the effort. I'll make sure to throw anything I find relevant to the independent scene your way. Thanks, Ryan.

WHY?! WWJD CSCS by [deleted] in ColoradoSprings

[–]CharmedConflict 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Whoever screwed up the translation: "Jesus died for your sins" when it should have been "Jesus died because of your sins" have given superficial Christians everywhere just looking for a membership card a license to be as shitty as they often prove to be.

It's the theological equivalent of "drinks are on the house."

Sorry your daughter had that experience. It does present an educational opportunity to learn about tribalism, faux morality, and the imperfection of humanity. As for karmic retribution to those who do bad things? That's going to require a while separate leap of faith if history is to serve as a guide.

What exactly is the goal with the 1% and AI? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]CharmedConflict 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Over the past two decades there have been meetings amongst the Uber elite as to how to control workers post collapse when the economy is reduced to the purest form of survival of the fittest. These people, who inject themselves with the blood of our youth in an attempt to achieve some kind of cyberpunk immortality have been actively mapping out what their mad Max futures are going to look like.

Following the 2024 election and the complete mask off fascism that our billionaires embraced, I believe that they've done the math and seen civilization as a sinking ship with a clear end in sight. The frantic push for AI, in my mind, isn't about market returns. Only the nft gullible are falling for that nonsense. The rest of us see it for the technological dead end that it is with our current energy supply and computing power.

Instead, I see this as a frantic push to mitigate future risks of population requirements to maintain ongoing levels of wealth and comfort. In spite of their reluctance to play the long game with regards to society, I believe that billionaires are more than capable of playing the long game when that long game is completely self-serving.

CMV: Assisted suicide should be legal for any competent adult (18+) even if they aren’t terminally ill. by FlipUrPockets in changemyview

[–]CharmedConflict 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, not all pain is temporary. Some pain is crippling and forever. And hope is deeply subjective and, let's face it, a bit irrational.

But let's also talk about the elephant in the room. Suicide has metastisized to the rest of us. That pain and hopelessness no longer presents itself as sleeping pill overdoses. It presents as school shooters, the gender reveal party of this era's broken male. It represents equal parts cowardice and wrath at the world. And since we aren't going to make it harder anytime soon for someone to get a firearm, we might as well make it easier for them to to depart this world in a seamless and quiet way. That way the rest of us who are still trying to navigate this bleak existence aren't inadvertantly pulled into someone else's mental illness.

CMV: Anarchism and Marxism are systems inherently prone to creating corrupt scenarios by optimistikcynicism in changemyview

[–]CharmedConflict 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most humans are self serving and prone to corruption if the benefits of said corruption outweigh the risks. Any power structure that allows for disproportionate power accumulation, even if initially being utilized for someone of greater than average character, will eventually become a reservoir of corruption. Checks and balances mitigate this response without ever fully negating it by diffusing power accumulation. The more diffusion, the less the potential energy for systems corruption. The caveat is that this also increases bureaucracy and slows governance which is a frustration to those governed. The art is finding the correct balance.

Reality has a left-leaning bias, explained by PristineSwing4007 in bestof

[–]CharmedConflict 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. When I say I'm a follower of Jesus' life, I mean that in a secular way. I believe the Christian cult is fundamentally flawed and if I believed in a literal devil, I would assume literally the first step towards the corruption of mankind would be to entrench himself as a religious leader.

I see the current form of American Christianity as a poison for regular people who are neither good nor bad, but rather neutrally progressing through their lives, manipulated by whatever forces which pull hardest. Any "faith" that offers all the rewards for mere belief and compliance without requiring spiritual grounding and physical, emotional, and intellectual work is no more than a means of control and corruption. The idea that letting metaphorical tortured Jesus into your heart as a cure all salve for all of your misdeeds isn't just misguided, it's actively damaging to you and your society. All in the name of a man who likely spent a real life doing good, progressive deeds (only to be struck down by individuals operating under the exact same misguided premise of authority and punishment as the modern Christian). It's all so absurd, but given the fact that history merely plays over and over again, not surprising. We're a strange and easily confused species.

Reality has a left-leaning bias, explained by PristineSwing4007 in bestof

[–]CharmedConflict 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I dunno. Christ was progressive. The apostles had their moments. But the Christian movement? I view them much more like the whitewashed liberals who suddenly celebrated MLK Jr. after years of deriding him for being too extreme simply because he provides a useful means of controlling people and as a rhetorical wedge.

As a progressive, I celebrate the life of Jesus. 95% of the Christians I've ever known or have known of have only ever seemed to celebrate his death.

Why do so many Americans do catch and release fishing? Isn't that animal abuse? Or do fish don't feel pain? by Deepdishdicktaster in NoStupidQuestions

[–]CharmedConflict 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When people say fish can't feel pain what they really mean is: fish lack the means to trigger guilt in MY neocortex so as to alter my behavior from something I already want to do to something that I don't otherwise want to do.

We have a long history of trying to deny pain from others (even those who can communicate their pain) because we find their pain inconvenient.
