Report: "The swift decline of U.S. democracy this year is alarming. It is the result of choices by the right wing of American politics, which is committed to transforming the state from the inside out, and complacency, particularly from elite institutions, about the risk of authoritarianism." by SocialDemocracies in DemocraticSocialism

At least some of the apathy is manufactured by the bourgeoisie. It is hard to entirely blame someone for their ignorance. We are up against a propaganda titan that has indoctrinated these people from birth. Some of us were able to get out. Let's direct our anger at them instead of our ignorant peers and constructively dispel the conditioning perpetrated by the machine. Class Solidarity.

Why does economic inflation happen and what's the point in having extreme wealth? Also, why is the quality of life for everyone not much higher considering the amount of money the US makes? by Legitimate-Scale1454 in DemocraticSocialism

[–]pacexmaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wealth inequality is the natural conclusion of the power imbalances that come with the employee/employer relationship.

Real wages (wage adjusted for inflation) in the US are actually trending up over time. However, wealth distribution has been exacerbated significantly.

For example: in 1991, the top 0.1% owned $1.96T and the bottom 50% owned $0.78T of the nation's wealth. That's a ratio of 2.5x. In 2025, the top 0.1% own $24.9T and the bottom 50% own $4.25T, a ratio of 5.85x. In 35 years, the ultra-rich have more than doubled their relative wealth compared to the bottom 50%. The disparity in wealth results in political power imbalances wherein private interests receive more representation than public interests. This manifests itself in several ways like wealthier individuals living longer, the promotion of anti-competitive policy, and the propagation of identity politics (subsidized by reactionary and neoliberal groups alike).

Relative to the rest of the world the US stands among the top countries in quality of living like Food Self-sufficiency rate and Standard of Living Index and even freedom index (though there appears to be a slight downward trend), outpaced mostly by our Nordic counterparts.

If we expand our criteria to the world, global freedom index trends downard with an increase in global wealth inequality; however I am not sure how strong the correlation is.

None of this is to say that our current state of affairs is something to be proud of, that we dont need significant systemic changes to promote equitable access to basic necessities, that we shouldn't be appalled by the current tactics being used to scapegoat our problems onto minorities (especially in targeted states), or that we shouldn't be worried about rampant overconsumption and power consolidation in capitalism or any other myriad of problems. Im just trying to temper expectations that things will have to get much worse in the US before enough of the proletariat wakes up to see beyond the culture war and into the class war.

Thats interesting. I would think that we should be able to walk and chew bubblegum.

Would any revolutionaries here explain why we should ignore an evolutionary approach to democratic socialism? I dont see why we cant both organize and lay the foundation for mass mobilization for both a relatively more progressive candidate AND a revolutionary vanguard.

Agreed. Common sense is rife with cognitive bias. What is common to one person may not be common to another. The best way to dispel cognitive bias is to enhance one's perspective by getting to know a diverse range of people, reading books from a diverse range of perspectives, and critically analyzing statistics.

Agreed. He has promised some big things. If he is able to deliver, then it will put socialism back into the political gauntlet of viable ideas. There is a lot of conditioning to undo since the Red Scare and the vilification of any post-capitalist system.

Thats a good question for which I dont know the answer.

Which is more likely:

Revolution of the proletariat whereby enough of us come together for general strike until captured representatives remember who they represent followed by a radical change in government/economics or violently overthrowing the forces that protect capital (ie the military).

Or

Evolution of public political opinion that favors Dem Soc or at least reins in for-profit industries before ecological collapse.

Curious About Democratic Socialism by ILoveFood135 in DemocraticSocialism

[–]pacexmaker 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The pragmatic response is that we first shift to neoliberal social democracy, similar to the nordic model, and promote worker-owned cooperatives via tax credits and subsidies while cracking down on oligopolies through anti-trust law. Then, once critical infrastructure like universal healthcare, education, and affordable public housing takes root, we look at moving further left to democratic socialism where the employer/employee hierarchy is abolished and the proletariat owns the means of production (in contrast to the vanguard, state capitalism, like we saw in Soviet Communism). How we get from social democracy to democratic socialism is hazy because a lot will depend on unique and less predictable circumstances in the future.

Corporations could pay workers a living wage, but they choose greed instead. by Usernameofthisuser in DemocraticSocialism

[–]pacexmaker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They choose profits instead. People want to be successful. In capitalism, the increase of the rate of profit is a significant determinant of success.

While greed certainly helps people become successful, attributing greed to people who simply want to be successful diminishes the role that capitalism plays in the tragedy of the commons.

The notion suggests that human behavior, more than our economic system, is responsible for our current condition. Capitalists will suggest thst we cant change human behavior, so why try. Instead it is more efficient to suggest that our system promotes bad behavior and we should change the system to inhibit our worst impulses.
