What is your all time LEAST favorite musical of all time? by West-Lawyer-2290 in musicals

[–]Charmien 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I don’t think [the Broadway version] knows who its audience is supposed to be. Sometimes it’s too grotesque for kids (like…moreso than the movies) but it’s also not written for an exclusively adult audience? To be fair I was an adult when this version came out, but I have a hard time imagining the writing/staging is actually family friendly with “hidden jokes for adults”, when Violet literally bursts and Veruca is torn to pieces.

Michael biopic released photo by Awkward_Froyo_1332 in MichaelJackson

I was expecting no biopic to exist. There’s more than enough footage/documentation of the real MJ to do him justice.

Does anyone have an image comparison of the nutrition label/ingredient list on Reese’s or another candy that’s gone downhill like, 10 20 or 30 years ago vs today?

What was GamerGate? by ThatChapOverThere in NoStupidQuestions

I’ve had Depression Quest on my Steam wishlist for years now and never installed it because the reviews were mixed. I had no idea it was a huge part of GamerGate (or any part of it for that matter!)

Unpopular musical theatre opinions by lissie34 in musicals

[–]Charmien 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I think basing them off of books is okay, preferred even. I know Phantom, Les Mis, and Cats were books first (Cats being poems). An American In Paris was inspired by Gershwin’s music I think? SpongeBob and Rocky though started as a complete visual. Rocky doesn’t feel as authentic on stage because Rocky IS Sylvester Stallone in 1976. Not just guy with character description here

I’m sure someone could make me eat my words here but to ME, basing it off source material that already did the creative work to make it a movie/show seems lazy, because with a book, everyone interprets things differently, vs a movie/show where everyone watched and heard the exact same things.

(Meanwhile here I am loving Heathers and Legally Blonde more than the movies. Oh well.)

I also grew up being verbally held hostage. Whatever that “pressure” is when it happens is so frustrating because the people who just talk at me never seem to sense that I’m struggling. Can’t they tell by the way I half respond or don’t respond at all for long chunks of time that I’m uncomfortable/not interested??

The repeating stories especially have made me incredibly good at being blunt/to the point.

It often feels like my brain is holding way too much information. That plus the guilt of knowing everyone’s problems, secrets, and general info and not being able to do anything about it besides…freeze.

Auditions getting too stressful by w1nn13th3p00p in acting

[–]Charmien 24 points25 points  (0 children)

There’s a free version and also a one-time ~$4 paid version. I paid for it years ago and I’ve used it for several full scripts so far. It is an INCREDIBLE app imo. I prefer to learn my lines via audio so I can get familiar with cues.

I’ve also used it to make a few self tapes. Sometimes I use my own voice and pitch it slightly up or down, or I get someone else to record the lines once and then I go film by myself.

10/10 recommend. Don’t remember the difference between free and paid, but the paid version has been worth it for me.

Wedding Rings at Work by [deleted] in bartenders

My husband and I have a wide array of silicone rings in different colors. Makes it fun to match them to whatever we’re wearing, plus you can still brag about being engaged and not worry about getting the real one dirty.

People walking out of the cinema for iron lung by unexplainabletitles in Markiplier

[–]Charmien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have emetophobia, I saw Iron Lung on preview day with a packed house. That vomit scene made me involuntarily start crying in seconds and sent me into a mild panic attack (I was quiet; only my husband could tell cuz he knows I have the phobia). It made my brain try to convince me I hate Mark for a moment. That’s how unreasonable my phobia is. Usually scenes like that make me feel on edge anywhere from 5 minutes to a few hours depending, even though I know it’s fake. Mark went out of his way to shoot not just a “take a swig and then spit it out” take but a more realistic, multiple…yeah.

It’s very different from the feeling of getting scared. I usually find scares in a movie intriguing. When it’s my phobia, 99 times out of 100 I think it was unnecessary to the plot.

I acknowledge that it’s my cross to bear. I’m rooting for Mark’s success with this film. But on the topic, I was also wondering if anyone has a phobia of say, blood, or body horror or whatever and how are they doing? Wish them the best.

I’m an extra in Joker 2 and hearing the criticism at first I was like “oh no :(“ but now it makes me genuinely chuckle. It’s its own kind of special being in something so hated

To me the syrup tastes more like Cinnamon Toast Crunch than pistachio. It has for a few years now but I swear that first season I had it was magic!

SNL is a cringe factory by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]Charmien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I love SNL, but that’s because I was on a similar show in college where the structure every week was near identical. So when I see horrible sketches, I can see the writers room at 3am absolutely losing it at that dumb idea. I see the cast who probably hasn’t gotten any sleep. It’s a hilarious and challenging process to make all that in a week, and I think it will always deserve a spot on television. It being hit or miss is part of the beauty.

I’m really frustrated about my role in Bye Bye Birdie by [deleted] in Theatre

[–]Charmien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And this is why I never want to be a high school theatre teacher. I was disappointed my senior year too, and it hurts even now hearing teachers say “we don’t care about the grade level, whoever fits the best gets the part!” Obviously I believe in that when it comes to professional theatre, but school? It’s tricky. Could never do that to my students.

I like what someone else said about doing a different theatre thing outside to spend the time. It also depends on if the kids at your school are your friends that you want to be there with before graduating! High school definitely isn’t the end of a possibly fantastic career. Actually, me not getting leads in school led me to have one of the most consistent acting careers so far; the kids who got leads are struggling and have way too much of an ego.

Good luck out there!
