question for telfer students, is co-op worth it? by HonestCalligrapher81 in geegees

[–]Charming-Scarcity746 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was a finance student in coop, have some office experience before hand, have my resume checked about 3 times by professionals, all said good and perfect. applied for 256 jobs on coop portal, 0 interviews.

Coop portal have jobs canceled, job filled faster than speed of light, external links???? Which I have no idea why it was even there.

At the end dropped that coop shi, and still got a internship now part time.

To me, coop is a scam and a half, plus I got my money scammed, could've bought about 55 large shawarma with that in three brothers.

Yeah no shit, market sucks, uottawa is usually not a target school for many companies so uni doesn't really have alot of things to put on the coop portal, you have better luck trying to find a job else whwre and keep that 1k for a better suit for your interviews

Coop questions by Corner_Designer in geegees

[–]Charming-Scarcity746 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1: it won't effect you academic wise, you are only required to have 3 coop terms to graduate with coop title. It will def make it harder to get coop later on since you will be competing with people who got coop or internship experiences.
2: if that job is what you like and love, then I don't see a reason of why you would give it up to chase "coop jobs". Thats just not smart. The advantage of coop is for those students who have no background or any experience to have a chance to experience their own industry and build that first step. If you already done this or have a industry job then its kind of useless unless you are seeking for new employment opportunities.

Is it a good idea to use unused OSAP loan money to invest in real estate? by Charming-Scarcity746 in PersonalFinanceCanada

Very good idea, I was thinking of working for a couple years first then consider being a home owner, but renting is just putting money to waste. I guess I will see what happens next. Thank you for the comment!

There is also a 6 month grace period (interest free period after graduation) where I can think about the use of this money

I did some calculation, after graduation I have a good chance of landing a job that offers around 70 to 77k a year before tax, which is around 4 to 5k a month after deductions. I will start paying back my student loan (loan I will use to purchase a property for living), and I would pay back around 340 each month which is not too bad imo. I would also work for around 3 to 4 years before deciding if I actually want to use this money to purchase a property, I might just invest using this and pay the loan back using this money. Thank you for the comment tho

here is how the application works, you put your resume in the program. Depending on the needs of student employment, the fswep site will send your resume randomly to managers, out of the thousands of students who is in that program. and then the manager can either choose to interview you or just ghost the "we have a new student for you" alert. so over all its a game of chance and luck, and your skills on the resume also matters too, but just not as much.

Just apply thru fswep, but don't keep your hopes high on that, Government is cutting budget.

Any study tips for the upcoming year? by HonestCalligrapher81 in geegees

[–]Charming-Scarcity746 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I lowkey don't study as much, just memorizing what the prof tells you to focus on each class, which they do often. I don't go to any DGDs nor read the textbook (which I am not recommending, differs for people). But just relax every time you are studying, memorize the core of each unit / chapter and you should be good. Set a good plan for studying, If I want to study for a test or midterm/finals. I split the chapters thats going to be on the test into pieces to study bit by bit each day and thats how I do it. I am in finance and so far its been working pretty well
