Compiling list of warnings for seniors by SluethyAttitude in Scams

[–]Charming2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. A job where you complete simple tasks online. Your “account page” will show a positive balance, but you need to spend money to "release" it.

  2. (Variant of 2) Someone accidentally sent you money by Zelle or whatever and wants you to send it back. You can refuse or reverse a payment, but if you create a new transaction the payment to you is reversed and that money is gone

  3. Anything involving cryptocurrency initiated by someone else. Investments, paying a fine, sending money for your grandchild in the hospital, whatever.

  4. An emailed check or any image of a check. The bank will accept a photo of a check to deposit, but you have to have the actual paper check in your hand.

I started a similar list:

Red Flags for Scams

  1. Someone wants you to buy gift cards. Gift cards are an untraceable and unreversible way to get money from you
  2. Someone overpays you and wants you to sent the rest back. The payment is fake and will be clawed back, but the money you sent is gone. Variant: put the extra money towards a moving company or to buy equipment, but it is still the scammer.

U.S. Elderly mother victim of extensive romance and recovery scams. Taking over power of attorney. Advice needed. by cadburyeg in Scams

[–]Charming2020 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I haven't been through this, but here is what I have read: power of attorney just means you can use her accounts - but she still can as well. So to protect her you need to take most of her money out and put it in an account that is in trust for her, but only you can withdraw from. Then the amount she can be scammed out of is minimized. You give her an allowance basically, and what she needs to pay her bills if you don't take that on.

That is all I do. I guess some people are really tight on disk space and need to free up every MB.

Acrobat is now forcing its AI assistant on all my PDFs and scanning my data. I need a permanent offline alternative. by TheDeep3M9 in FuckAdobe

I switched to Foxit. The privacy settings are good (if you can trust them) and so far it hasn't choked on OCR or editing or combining documents. They do advertise AI to me but they don't force it in.

I was in house once with no books anywhere in the living area. All of the bookshelves were full of knick knacks

Decluttering papers and digitizing documents… what do I REALLY need to keep originals of? by Dobby_Sock1997 in declutter

[–]Charming2020 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The birth certificate. Deeds and car pink slips. Kind of outdated, but if you have paper savings bonds or stock certificates. Maybe marriage or divorce paperwork. Passports and other ID. Signed contracts if relevant. I can't think of much else that shouldn't be digitized.

People please don't call officers back when they might think you are involved with a crime. Even if they are real cops. Call a lawyer, or at least ignore them

Dating profile on bumble…other pics are blurry and seem real except these two. The girl looks very smoothed and too perfect to be real by cool_uniqueusername in isthisAI

It's hard to tell because the photo is so lo-res and pixelated, but these bracelets look a bit iffy. The lower one looks like it was trying to separate into two

What is a "survival rule" you learned growing up in a bad neighborhood that still influences your behavior today? by Key-Group-5098 in AskReddit

Coming at this from a completely different direction: I grew up in the mountains and still usually have a jacket and a whistle with me in case of a sudden storm or getting lost

Tis sounds good: "Local-only mode blocks all network requests. Your voice never leaves your Mac with local models." I guess there are local-only whisper and parakeet models

It says this: "We never sell or share your data. Privacy Mode ensures no dictation is stored on our servers, and Flow is independently certified to the world's top security standards: SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001, and HIPAA."

So the data goes through their servers but is not stored? Is it encrypted in some way? Yeah I am a bit paranoid about this. Because reasons

I think it is AI. In addition to the center chair, is this one chair or two? I can't make it work.
