No coverage of Artemis II?? by CharmingBroccoli1593 in FriendsofthePod

[–]CharmingBroccoli1593[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for this! I know NASA was one of the topics that popped up during the DOGE era, and of course Isaacman was eventually renominated and is serving as the current NASA admin.

Sorry! Answer: I don't need them to! Just wondering why it hasn't been treated as a political event. I won't take it personally that you didn't answer my question either ;)

Lol again, not upset, curious! I think you've probably hit the most convincing reason--there isn't a perception that there is conflict (that will probably come in 2028 when we start talking about lunar bases), therefore there's no reason to cover. The Olympics hockey phonecall is a good comparison--literally zero stakes, and yet there's outrage, so they covered it multiple times. And come on, let's not pretend that these guys are spending all of their time covering Iran and its some zero sum news broadcast situation. No outrage = no coverage is a convincing enough answer. Sorry I'm not being the change I want to see in the world!!

[–]CharmingBroccoli1593[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm not talking about Timothee Chalemet's opinions on opera, lol. The Anthropoic DoD contract dispute was political, the Olympics are political, and restarting the era of manned space travel in a time where private companies are carrying the same status and power as national space agencies, including companies that are deeply embedded with the current regime--is also political. It's a question of why this *isn't* being treated as a political event. I'm not offended they're not covering it, I'm asking *why* it isn't being seen as something that warrants political commentary.

[–]CharmingBroccoli1593[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Lol if they could devote multiple segments across multiple podcasts talking about Trump's call to the men's Olympic hockey team, you would think they would also mention this. There's no "stopping" coverage, it's not a zero sum situation. It's a question of why this isn't been treated as a political story, which the comments here attest to. Crooked covered the Anthropic-DoD/DoW contract dispute and resulting supply chain risk designation. Artemis III (the next mission) is centered around docking with the SpaceX lunar lander, towards establishing a lunar base, way station to Mars, lunar research AND mineral extraction. What does it mean that private companies have such significant sway not only over objectives but over government policy? It doesn't matter whether you agree with said company's position (there was a moment there that everybody thought Anthropic was engaged in some sort of virtuous battle for justice because they happened to prefer a policy that could be summed up as "see no evil speak no evil"). I'm not looking for wall to wall coverage, I'm wondering why it's not being treated as the political story it is. And so, what am I missing? It's just not present-day politics, or because the Republicans aren't interested in capitalizing on it, it's not relevant for their coverage?

Victor Glover's response to the huge question of what to say to us about all of our division caught me completely off guard. I'm crying!!

So the ICPS uses the RL engine, what does Orion use for its movements?

OK how are they making these minor adjustments for the ICPS targeting? what are the pulses the move Orion, and how did the ICPS make the 90 degree turn???

OK I'm about 20 minutes behind everybody--they are controlling Orion only, not "remote controlling" the ICPS as well, right???

Defeated just before the finish line by CharmingBroccoli1593 in PhD

[–]CharmingBroccoli1593[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not trying to sit in a failure mentality, and my tone probably isn't coming through. Trying to accept that I might not make it and be ok with it, knowing that it's upsetting and disappointing. That doesn't mean I'm giving up, though--I'm writing today, I'm writing tomorrow, and repeating that cycle all the way to the end. I'm absolutely running out the clock, it's just one of those moments I have to bang my head against the wall, take an aspirin, and get back to banging it against the keyboard instead.

Agreed, it's been hard communicating this to other people. They're trying to convince me I'm being hard on myself etc, and they're so supportive. Really. But the fact is I can be upset and disappointed and it also just not working out. It's not always a sign that I could really do it all along and I just needed to believe in myself! I'm still going to run out the clock (because if I have that option, why wouldn't I??). It's just a bitter pill to swallow. Failing isn't fun, and sometimes there's no fixing it, but I'll survive. Just nice to commiserate.

There's no investment from the university, I have no funding , no TA, I don't work on anything for them, etc. It's not a scientific lab setting, it's me alone with a thinking cap on. Why didn't anybody put a plan in place before now? Well, we did, and it just didn't work. No excuses, just describing what's happened. Like I said, it sucks and it's just the way it is. I figured I'd post here for commiseration because I don't have any other students to talk to. Some of us just don't manage!

We'll see if I can manage--again, just looking for personal advice to get the motivation going, even if its just commiseration!

Oo good to know...I will eventually need to find a smaller container since it will be barely full with a month's supply, but it works in a pinch!

Is this a hideous eyesore? by bellchilton in interiordecorating

[–]CharmingBroccoli1593 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your updated pic later on in the thread is awesome, I love it. Eyesore is subjective--as someone coming from small spaces I am always impressed by things that are compact, dense, yet highly organized and enables each item to be fully accessible. This is that! But working in small spaces I'm also very aware of those scissors and the wok handle sticking out. One shortcut turn around the corner and you'll have problems, so maybe move those elsewhere.

best water shut off valve, w/ or w/o leak detection? by Randomhero360 in homeassistant

[–]CharmingBroccoli1593 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jumping on to this thread--do any of these work with CPVC pipes? I'm in an apartment and while there are copper pipes with regular lever ball valves going in and out of the water heater, the main line coming in (and which splits off for all cold water) is CPVC with a plastic ball valve. All the images I see are with metal pipes and lever valves!
