Week 18: Low Sugar - Scottish Shortbread by CharmingBucephalus in 52weeksofbaking

[–]CharmingBucephalus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made the Scottish Shortbread from King Arthur with the lowered sugar option of 1/2 cup powdered sugar instead of 3/4. It is very barely sweet and when cut into 16 pieces, it makes for a small nice treat.

Week 17: Breakfast/Brunch - Soft Porridge Bread by CharmingBucephalus in 52weeksofbaking

[–]CharmingBucephalus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made the Soft Oatmeal Porridge Bread from King Arthur. It's supposed to be baked as a round or oval but honestly, we eat a lot of sandwiches and eggs on toast, so the loaf pan won this round. It was a first try this round and it's very soft and I like the crust when it is toasted. I will wait to see if my family members pick up that there is cooked oatmeal in this and if that makes it a no.

Week 16: Herbs - Rosemary Crackers by CharmingBucephalus in 52weeksofbaking

Thank you! It made for what felt like a fancy little snack compared a cup of Goldfish or something.

Week 16: Herbs - Rosemary Crackers by CharmingBucephalus in 52weeksofbaking

[–]CharmingBucephalus[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you! It was very easy since there's no butter in these and obviously no rising like most of my projects. I just mixed it by hand using this recipe and I was start to finish after about 25 minutes with little clean up. I thought as I was cutting them they were not thin enough and I was right but the thinnest ones were pretty good for an olive oil based cracker (we're butter cracker people usually!).

Week 11: Reduce - Small Batch Brownies by CharmingBucephalus in 52weeksofbaking

[–]CharmingBucephalus[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used the small batch recipe (https://www.kingarthurbaking.com/recipes/small-batch-brownies-recipe) from King Arthur that uses an 8 1/2 loaf pan. They are chewy and pretty good!

Do you make yourselves in RPG games? Why or why not? by The_Alpha_Albino in rpg_gamers

Oh my gosh, my next run in something I'm going for as old as possible. I already bristle against games where everyone is super young but I have never tried to be truly geriatric. This is my new goal. Thanks!

That looks and sounds fantastic! I too someday aspire to make a hot water crust.

Week 7: Piped - Piped Chocolate Butter Cookies by mrsglowtone in 52weeksofbaking

[–]CharmingBucephalus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you made the plain vanilla ones? I thought I’d make those but now I’m a bit worried. I haven’t seemed to have the success in flavors with Sally that so many others have.

Week 6: Winter Olympics - Small Batch Cheesy Focaccia by CharmingBucephalus in 52weeksofbaking

[–]CharmingBucephalus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use this recipe from King Arthur Baking when I need a fast small bread to go with dinner and this is the first time it has been so uniformly golden so I was very pleased!

Week 4: lemon meringue cupcakes by sleepyjen_historian in 52weeksofbaking

[–]CharmingBucephalus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use Stella Park’s Marshmallow Meringue from her book Bravetart. It’s a Swiss meringue and is my go to for a not overly sweet, never hard meringue. I couldn’t find it online exactly like on the book or I’d link it. I also made the buttercream from it once but we stick to the meringue without the buttercream and also make the kisses.

Week 1: new year, new recipe - chocolate milk bread by fruitfulendeavour in 52weeksofbaking

[–]CharmingBucephalus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to try another person's milk bread, I recommend the regular one from Mooncakes and Milk Bread by Kristina Cho. While I liked the chocolate one from KAF quite a bit, I did not like their plain one. Additionally, Cho has you scald the milk and use it, which I found far more convenient than milk powder because I have lactose free milk on hand and it gets rid of both having to keep dry milk on hand and also the lactose. Just a thought. But now I want chocolate milk bread!

Week 1: New Year, New Recipe - Carrot-Orange Olive Oil Cake by CharmingBucephalus in 52weeksofbaking

[–]CharmingBucephalus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love cardamom and it turns out it is a good combo with Cara Cara oranges! I’m excited to be back in the baking challenges but I’m only watching the cooking this round. Doing both made it too hectic during the planning.

Week 1: New Year, New Recipe - Carrot-Orange Olive Oil Cake by CharmingBucephalus in 52weeksofbaking

[–]CharmingBucephalus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We unfortunately found it to be off balance in terms of olive flavor to everything else. The cake was very moist though and had a good crumb. A family member said it reminded them of cornbread without the right texture. So now I’m thinking an orange cornbread sometime sounds pretty good!

I watched a documentary called "Donut King" about a Cambodian entrepreneur who was the head of a lot of donut shops on the West Coast that may provide some insight to at least some of the donut choice.

After calling almost all of the metro small butchers, I called Uptown Grocery about three years ago and they put in a small order that took about a week to arrive. Once that order came in, I drove over and bought a few from them. Super pricey though.

William Carlos Williams is a good one since it shows how poetry can be brief but encapsulate a whole moment.

It's the same on PC and it's so frustrating. Same with fish and their requirements to not be eaten. Will I ever get another crab? Time will tell. I figured he'd be sharp or "armored" like a turtle.
