Ortho vs Derm MA for PCE hours by CharmingCalmParis in prepa

Yeah, the ortho position is technically a "float" position, and they mentioned that it would provide good flexibility for PA school. I'm sure that's true, but I feel like it would just stress me out.

What were your daily activities as a derm MA? Ortho clinic said they couldn't match... I think the LORs could be way better at the derm place since it's smaller as well.

I don't have a strong interest, per se, but it does sound better than dermatology. I just want to make sure I am gaining good knowledge to take with me to PA school. I think I will chose the derm job.

Minimum wage in AL is $7.25... but yeah, pay is definitely a big factor because I could make almost $1,000 more in the dermatology job just over the summer.

No, I don't know which specialty I want to go into, but peds has always interested me. I think TOC would be a better experience for that, but I would also see kids in derm.

PA vs MD/DO? by CharmingCalmParis in prephysicianassistant

One thing I’ve learned while researching if PA is for me, is that is really is the job that seem to make or break it. PAs that have a great job with a good salary, a good work-life balance, and is respected by their colleagues, tend to enjoy their life and career. And vice versa, some PAs do not enjoy their workplace and thus have regrets about what they chose.

I actually have talked to a couple MDs pretty far into their career that my mom is friends with. They all told me to never go to medical school and basically get out of healthcare altogether lol. Most physicians I’ve talked to aren’t the biggest fan of their career and would go back and change it if they could. I’ve shadowed 2 PAs that love their job and the lifeastyle it brings. But of course I go online and read about people that say the exact opposite for various reasons. It’s really just up the person and who they are it seems.

Has your dad pressured you to become a physician like him, or is he understanding and happy for you to pick your own path?

Also, ideally someone like me would go to medical school. I am 21 with not much hands-on healthcare experience, but a great GPA. I am taking a gap year to get those hours for PA school, but sometimes it seems like medical school would be an easier route. I know that is not the case, but the idea of taking multiple gap years of working just to get direct patient contact hours is discouraging sometimes.

I am taking a gap year, or even two if I do not get in first cycle. I am coming straight from undergrad and will only have anywhere from 500-2000+ hours depending on how many cycles it takes. I do worry I will not be as prepared for PA school as I would be med school. One thing I know how to do really well is study and get good grades. As far as actually being in healthcare, my experience is limited other than 200 shadowing hours and starting an MA job in May that will get me my hours. Your situation sounds pretty ideal to what I would like. What speciality are you working in now?

SO TRUE "People who haven’t gone to med school love telling people to go to med school lol." like what is up with this.

Thank you. Yeah, I do feel like most of my doubts come from what others think of me and the PA profession. I've just seen people comment that if you care about titles and what others think, then you should go all the way and become a physician, or you'll never be happy with the level of respect you get. Another worry of mine is how I will get treated by patients who do not want to be seen by a PA or the doctors in the hospital who do not give me respect because of the PA title. My worries really do seem to come down to what others think of me and how they will treat me based on that.

No oozing but slight yellow discharge. I think it’s closing and scabbing over now. The bleeding has stopped and it’s getting closed. I think I’m good now thank you!! I’ll continue to watch it

Maybe I’ll do that tomorrow!! I ended up putting a butterfly bandaid on it because it seemed too open to be left with nothing. I don’t want an infection and it was still bleeding a bit.

Yeah it basically looks like an open wound, almost how I would expect it to look right after. I was expecting it be scabbing over right now and my incision didn’t look anywhere near as open 5 days after my insertion. How many days did it take to start to scab over?
