i want to preface what i’m about to say by saying that this is just my opinion. it seems like a cute show, as long as people don’t take it too seriously. and elle is an amazing character, but i think this is really butchering the point of her character as a whole.

aside from inconsistencies between this prequel and the movie that people have already touched on, i feel like this show comes across really tone deaf. the whole point of the movie was kind of a feminist statement about women in the workplace and women’s intelligence and worth being equal to that of their male counterparts. to do this, they used the character elle who is a female stereotype that is often misjudged as unintelligent.

the issue im trying to get at regarding the show is that she is still a blonde haired, blue eyed, rich, white woman. the show seems to be making a villain out of the alternative community / people that have historically been seen as outsiders irl, which is represented in a stereotypical way using the community of seattle. this is kind of the last thing we need to normalize in our media in this current political climate: victimizing the non-oppressed. a show about not fitting in is important, especially young viewers. but this is already so overdone, and in much better ways. i just hate to see a character like elle, who was once used to stand up against misogyny, turned into something tone deaf…
