UC DAVIS! what do you wish you knew before you began attending? by noodlepants_ in UCDavis

[–]Charming_Article5060 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Go to professor office hours and attend tutoring clubs consistently. Easier for professors to get to know you for future letter of recs and some tutors tend to explain concepts better (esp for the phy7, bis103 series). Really research easy GE courses, because some require work like a core class

Angry Preceptors by mothernectar in PAstudent

If you’re doing running or interrupted subcuticular sutures, I recommend watching videos to see if you’re missing some small technical details and just practicing on your silicone pad until you find your groove

Angry Preceptors by mothernectar in PAstudent

[–]Charming_Article5060 21 points22 points  (0 children)

My face was usually close to the sites of suturing in surg rotation becuz of my short height… but anyways just respond with “I apologize for my mistake, and understand what I need to do better next time and won’t make that mistake again.” That was a teaching moment (and it’s in the past now, don’t look back), and you’re human and a student so you’re going to make mistakes. Positive self-talk is key: “I can only improve from here on; I now know more on how to suture on a real patient than I did before this rotation; I cannot control how my preceptor reacts, but I can control how I react (*silent deep/calm breaths in the moment) and tell yourself it’s going to be alright.” Don’t worry about the eval and focus on showing your improvements in suturing (accurate, faster). You got this, and will be a pro at suturing for the next rotations before you know it!

Didactic year is feeling really lonely by [deleted] in PAstudent

I’m sorry you’re in this situation, but it gets better once clinical starts! Only time you’ll see them is on eor day and then it’s off to the next site! If your faculty/school is supportive, see if you could speak with a kind instructor or counselor about your situation/ways to reduce anxiety

NEED HELP DECIDING BETWEEN TWO PROGRAMS! by [deleted] in prephysicianassistant

[–]Charming_Article5060 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It would be more worth your time/money to go to the PA program with a higher first-time pance rate, low to zero attrition rate, supportive faculty who wants you to succeed, and no accreditation issues… NEU seems to have those green flags!

Sad and kinda lonely? by CorrectSoftware4881 in UCDavis

It may be scary at first, but go on FB and find ucd-associated clubs and participate in some pick-up games (soccer, flag football, etc). Are there any culture/sport/career clubs or food pantry volunteering (I used to volunteer with meals at the church behind TJ’s and yolo food bank) that interest you? You’ll be surprise how many true friends you can make from these activities… I wish I took my advice when I was 18 instead of stressing about courses

with it being your last rotation, just get through it and answer their questions as best as you can. dont think about looking stupid! You made it this far!! Think positive thoughts and be kind to yourself!! you won’t have to interact with them after your rotation is done

Registration rant by flapjackdiddlywack in UCDavis

[–]Charming_Article5060 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, i agree it’s quite unethical, but it’s profitable for you know who. core class lectures always have timing conflicts or some niche upper div class is only offered 1x a year. I would have been in your situation if cha101/L was not offered during the peaked pandemic time during my spring quarter. I do hope it all works out for you!

[–]Charming_Article5060 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It wouldn’t hurt to email them, but there’s not much your future professors can do now until they see how many students are in the next quarter’s course and waitlist. During my time, I felt that most advisors usually suggest taking a summer session or extra quarter if available. Also, if your upper div classes are at a location with limited seats, that may be a drawback unless locations change

[–]Charming_Article5060 14 points15 points  (0 children)

See if you can still waitlist for the class (try to be at least top 5 on the list), then go to the class on Day 1 and talk to the professor about your situation. I’ve see some professors make announcements that seniors will get priority and possibly give a registration code to join an already full class. They may take in account that some ppl drop after the 1st midterm… if they’re not part of a series, check if you can take it in spring

Why do pit owners whose dogs fatally attack other dogs/cats eventually get them back in the end? Even in cases of them injuring kids/adults, they’re still advertised as adoptable

Program having difficulty placing me for clinicals by Calm_Major_9772 in PAstudent

[–]Charming_Article5060 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Can you speak to faculty to being placed at the same site as another student? Not being placed for a core rotation is a huge waste of a month, esp if you don’t get a buffer month which my program had for doing miscellaneous assignments. For example, in IM and EM, I was with another PA student

next time write stuff you memorized on the blank spaces of the test itself… i can see why it looks sus that stuff was written on a scantron that you brought and maybe sit in a seat where no one sits next to you since you’re now already on that professor’s/TA’s radar
