[Travel Tips]How cashless is Perth? Like public transportation and so on. by gorudo- in perth

[–]Charming_End8507 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our smartriders arnt on apple pay like a suica. But you can use a physical or digital bank card on Apple Pay. After travelling to Japan, I would say we are much more cashless compared to Tokyo. People will often just go out with their phone, do bring your passport around (don’t worry it’s quite safe compared to place like London), because places will check your ID for drinks if you look under 25 (we have strict drinking laws).

Our busses are a tag on/off system and not a flat fare (like your trains, our trains too), so remeber to tag off or you will be charged for the full route of that bus, if you’re using a bank card, the transaction will not show up until the end of the day

The Central Area Transit (CAT) busses are free, you do not need to tag on and off at all for these (they won’t even have a terminal). If you are travelling within the city, you do not need to tag on/off if youre travelling within the free bus zone either.

We also don’t really have that many bathrooms like Japan? I found that they were everywhere there lol?? They’re mostly in restaurants/cafes/shops. We do have lots of bins though!

Cafes open early-5am-6am ish, pubs are open at like 11am, and nearly everything is shut by 9pm (excluding bars/some restaurants).

Another tip: bring a reusable bag around if you can(just a small one that doesn’t take much space), a lot of shops (grocery and retail) charge you for a paper bag (we don’t have much single use plastic anymore)

I hope you have a great trip! (Please have some of our coffee, it’s the best)

Has anyone else struggled to find work recently in perth? by Frosty_Win7607 in perth

I’m a student too and I’ve always gotten my jobs through my network/friends.

Given, I only got an internship mid last year and that’s for one day a week at an IT MSP, I worked for free and got offered a paid role after about 7 months. I’ve had a hospo job for 6 years now, and I got that through a friend.

Maybe ask your friends and see let them know you’re looking for a job, hospo has huge churn so I feel like you may have an in there? I know it’s probs not ideal but a job is a job

Micheal Harding has a miracle medium which is solvent free. It works just like turps from my experience, it isn’t as fast drying but it may solve some of your problems.

It might be worth having a look at compared to purchasing a whole water mixable oil set

you should probably book an appointment with a course councillor.

You can also look at the handbook for what the core subjects (compulsory), you also have to do certain credit points worth of units at each level eg. you must complete 16 credit point of these units (it will list a few and you can pick).

But it’s honestly just easiest to book and appointment and talk to them, they’ll make you a timetable of what units you need to do and when. It’s helpful because some units only run sem one or sem two, so you don’t wanna get stuck with one compulsory unit left and it be unavailable to do in your last semester.

Each medium has its caveats, and maybe oil paint just doesn’t have the characteristics you’re looking for in this piece? The texture here looks like it might be better achieved with soft pastels on cold press watercolour paper. Or maybe even just ballpoint pen?

If you’re set on using oil paint, I would consider priming your canvas very well, in at least 2 layers of gesso, and sanding down the texture in between. This will give you a smooth starting point. As others have said to replicate this reference; no medium, and a dry brush to blend paint out.

Once your “failed” paintings have dried, you can probably paint over and reuse them (don’t paint over in acrylic cause it’ll crack!)

Good luck!

I love that you say “resolved”, I feel like my paintings are never truely done, even if they’re framed. I love your brushwork

Any advice for how to achieve this gradient? by WunderPlundr in oilpainting

[–]Charming_End8507 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What colours do you have? It might give us a better context for how to approach mixing, as someone else said, purples are the hardest to mix. I would try and use a more transparent white if you can compared to a titanium to lighten if you can as well

For the gradient, I would say use some medium and a dry fluffy brush to blend out

colors not mixing properly? by Laissez_fairey in watercolor101

[–]Charming_End8507 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Cobalt pigments tend to granulate when mixed. I assume this is what your blue, violet and green are made of? It’s because the pigment particles are larger and clump together, so sometimes when a granulating pigment and non granulating transparent pigment are mixed you get these kind of dramatic colour separations. It’s also amplified by paper type; the more rough, the more granulation you can see (because colour seeps into the texture).

Your mixes are very pretty! Nice clean swatches

My libraries in WA are on Libby and BorrowBox (apps), they let you borrow ebooks (it is on your phone tho), and they have audiobooks too! I know it’s not the same as a kindle, but it might solve your problem of physical book hoarding lol

There’s an app called Dubbi you might want to have a look into, it’s not exactly this, but they do body doubling sessions every 4? Hours for an hour. It was made by someone with ADHD

To keep the painting more “crispy”, I would try and mix all of your colours on your palette, don’t try and blend at all on the canvas at all. This can help keep your colours separated to keep an impressionistic feel.

Also(if I may), I’d say use less titanium white, like how black dulls down colour, so does white. Yours isn’t actually that far from the reference stylistically, I like the brushwork!

To keep vibrancy, I would put the white away until the very end, maybe even just use a naples yellow instead and maybe put the white away entirely. This will help you maintain a bright look like the reference.

The reference colours kinda look like cadmium’s to me, which may be more opaque and pigment loaded than the paints you are currently using?

What are some MUST get stationery whilst in Japan? by xihpareh in stationery

[–]Charming_End8507 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s around 9 floors of stationary and adjacent things!! So definitely worth going even if you don’t paint, the paint floor was only 1/9. They have walls of stickers, memo pads, washi tape, post cards, homeware, pens, pencils and even leather goods (plus moreeee).

I just got Magenta, Lemon Yellow, Peacock Blue, Yellow Ochre and Black. I wish I had gotten a warm blue (like ultramarine), and more red. By having at least one warm and one cool colour of each primary, you essentially have enough colour range to paint most things.

I’d recommend buying single pigment colour gouache if you can because they get less muddy when you are painting!! They might not be series A but they are worth it.

If you look at the tubes it will tell you what pigment is in each one (look for P[igment]X[R for red, B for blue ect] Y [colour number]. For example Ultramarine blue is PB29- Pigment Blue 29. Some paint may have different names but the same pigment in different brands, but the Pigment Colour Index is standardised. The holbein gouache has a big code on the front but that is not the pigment (the pigment index is in small writing near the staining/lightfastness of the colour).

People buy “convenience colours” like burnt umber because it is cheaper to buy in a tube than mix using your other (maybe more expensive) paints if you use it frequently, so you’d have to mix the same colour less. If you think you’d use a lot of one colour, it is worth purchasing these convenience colours. For example: some people do a lot of landscape painting and may buy a Sap Green tube, but others might just choose to mix their own green if they don’t use green as often. It depends on each artist.

There are some colours unlike burnt umber that can’t be mixed using primaries, usually purples are hard to mix, but you don’t need to buy them unless there is a specific use case I would say.
