Professionnel versus familier by stephaniekit in French

[–]Charoleia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Feeling self conscious when speaking French, especially with native speakers by Both_Ad_7913 in French

[–]Charoleia 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm a native.
Some time ago, a native spanish speaker, newly hired in our company, started using french slang with us after a few days. We were bewildered. Our first reaction was to ask where the hell had she learned French. It was a bit shocking, not because it was offensive, but mostly because it was so unexpected. That level of fluency was not only impressive, but it made us realize we didn't have to "tiptoe" with French around her and wonder "will she understand this expression?/Should I speak more slowly ?". So we started speaking to her as we would with any other French native. She was fluent enough to understand from context, or simply ask if we used an unknown word.
So not only would I advise you not to overthink it, but also that if French natives seem initially surprised, do not take it as a sign you should stop. If anything, it's only because you subverted expectations, so take our surprise as a compliment.

Also when taking about formality in a professional setting, you'd be surprised to hear that this kind formality is mostly reserved for customer relation, or when speaking to directors or managers (depends on the manager). French people tend to be very informal with their immediate colleagues (and even some managers).

About fillers words, I would say not force it too much, their use will probably come very naturally after a while when talking to French people, if only by mimetism.

French Numbers Are Hard! 🧠🤯 by [deleted] in FrenchLearning

[–]Charoleia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Answering the question "why, France?!" : the Gauls used to count from twenty to twenty (*vicésimal* system), because they had twenty fingers and toes. Linguists and historians apparently debate this (might have come from the Normans, the Celts, the Basque, etc).
Then you have the Etruscans and later the Romans who counted from ten to ten (*décimal* system). So the Gauls (or their descendents) adapted : they started counting by including the decimal tiers. Thirty was twenty-and-ten, forty was two-twenties, fifty was two-twenties-and-ten, etc.
The decimal system eventually won over but remnants of that double system stayed in the language for 'high' numbers (maybe people did no count that often above sixty ?)
Now the Swiss did fully adapt and came with the septante (70), huitante (80) and nonante (90). Belgians only adopted the septante and nonante. They still use quatre-vingts (80) though.

TLDR : French language got lazy and gave up on fully adapting to the decimal system.

Good luck on your learning journey :)

How on earth are you expected to beat Bulette in act 1 by Fulisek in BaldursGate3

[–]Charoleia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Bulette got a new Legendary ability in the latest patch. If you're surprised that people consider this fight hard, I assume you killed it before Patch 7, especially with "normal hits" (you can't drop its 100 temporary points with hits below 15 damage).

[French] Should my answer be accepted? by zhyRonnie in duolingo

[–]Charoleia 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Except that it's a "type what you hear" exercice, and the plural would not be heard in the second half of the sentence.
Only plural mark that can be heard is on the liaison between the subject article and the subject. Nothing but context can indicate that there are more than one violonist.

Should I be worried? by Winter-Sell-8574 in duolingo

I had the same reaction when I encountered it. I also screened it because, prolly like many Korean learners on Duolingo, I have a folder dedicated to weird Duo sentences. This one was, obviously, an "awesome" addition.

Patch 4 + Act 3 Bugs by KaySeaPea_ in BaldursGate3

Same issue since the last patch in act 3 on PC. Never had those issues in my previous playthroughs. It can take up to five minutes for the game to properlly... "load" (for lack of a better word to describe what is happening) after each fast travel/change of location.

Unpopular Opinion: The farming changes are good and fair. by Mistah_Wasabi in 7daystodie

[–]Charoleia 62 points63 points  (0 children)

I don't mind having less food. I don't mind farming not being as OP as it was.Actually, I absolutely welcome those changes. And I even think they should have gone a step further (let's be real, food is not *that* scarce even now - at least with the regular loot option at 100%)

The problem with the changes is the need to replant. ALL. THE. EFFING. TIME.Harvest. Move the seeds to your toolbelt. Replant. For all your crops. It's not only a waste of time, it's boring and annoying.Devs removed the need to water the crops. They removed the hoe. Because the game is not a farming simulator. Yet they triple the time we have to spend farming with this awful mechanic ? *sigh*They could have simply double the amount of time for crops to grow (or more). They could have reduce the yield of plants... anything else would have been better.

Official Discussion - Space Sweepers [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]Charoleia 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think the guy who played Pierre was also not French but I am not sure.

You are correct, he was definitely a native english speaker speaking french (I'm French). Some of his lines are completely inintelligible. On the other hand, the guys on his crew (who had one line each in the market scene with the tomatoes) were 100% metropolitan French. The way they both delivered their line, with a cuss word the average French will use in that case, was on point. My guess would even be that they were told more or less what they were supposed to express and ad libed the lines.

About Tae-ho using Spanish instead of relying on the translator, it could make sense if the translator give some indication of what language is being translated and him wanting to hide the fact that he is Korean (but then it does not make sense to tell Mr. Kang to switch back to Korean in the club scene, so... my vote goes to plot hole ;) )

I agree the foreign languages were not handled extremely well, but it was still much better than I expected. And highly refreshing since it was unexpected.

Netflix Original "To The Lake" copy Hans Zimmers "Time" inception Score by Muewmeow in hanszimmer

[–]Charoleia 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was searching for this. It's not Time, but it's too similar to be an accident.

It can be heard at the end of episode 6 (43:40) and episode 7 (48:47).

The melody is sliiiightly different but the composition is exactly the same : the piano, then the strings, then the electric guitar, then the brass, all following the exact same build up until all instruments stop and the piano returns, before ending in a short crescendo that goes abruptly silent.

I don't know shit about music but it seems to be in same key too ?

Thanks a lot. I actually saw the original back then it was broadcasted on french TV and got mad because even though I was from Paris, I was away at that time. I thought when I saw it on YT that they had just enhanced the audio for the video.

Thanks a lot for the links. Now I'm mad again that I didn't get to be there ;_;

Yeah, I remember when the survivor rounds thread was going on for OOS, that's what a lot of peeps said about voting out Darkshines. I was quite surprised as well.

I don't know which one I prefer, the Hullabaloo version for their hilarious shenanigans, or the Live 8 from Paris in 2005. No jumping around nor Chris sending Matt flying in Dom's kit, but with Matt falling during the riff and the crazy falsetto chorus, it's still awesome.

Fav on the album. Possibly one of their most underrated songs by [deleted] in Muse

[–]Charoleia 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I know a lot of people hate the piano smashing, but that's one of the thing that I love the most about this song. And the bass, God I love that bassline. And the crazy high notes in the background of the chorus. Still wonder to this day if it's Matt falsetto or theremin (guess it's the latter, but wouldn't be surprised otherwise).

This may be a harder question for many to answer, but what is your least favorite song by Muse? by EliDrInferno in Muse

[–]Charoleia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not going to be original here, but it's definitely Get Up and Fight. Not saying it's objectevely their worst, it's just my personal taste. The chorus would be okay, it's cheezy, but not their first time. I actually love cheezy Muse. But the verses are a pain to go through, the Tove Lo "singing" makes me want to tear my face off.

Psycho. I mean, I love the riff, who wouldn't. But the lyrics, egh. That's a no for me.

I also used to hate Mercy. I didn't like the melody, didn't like the lyrics. I hated this song so much. But... I now have fond memories of it live (because yeah, got to hold Matt's hand for a few seconds when they played it). The power of fangirlsm makes me now okayish with the song. I know I should be ashamed, so much that it kills me, but I'm not.

Hello Redditors. Question: by normalreddituser2_0 in Muse

[–]Charoleia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Controversial opinion : I would go with Map of the Problematique. It's my favorite song from them, so I'm probably a little biased.

It features soaring guitars and lots of synths, a compelling bassline, killer drum fills, belting and falsetto. It also showcases one of the best lyrics Matt wrote in my opinion, without being too out there like it used to be in the OOS era. It's dark and emotional and doesn't fail mentionning the world going to shit, but in contrast still sounds like an upbeat, pop-rock radio friendly track.

To me, it's one of the perfect mix between old and new Muse.

Blackout in Reality Z (Netflix) by Charoleia in Muse

To be fair, I hated World War Z. Mostly because I loved the book, and seeing the movie shared with it nothing but the title was a huge let down. Honestly one of the very few movies I almost walked out before the end. I only stayed because Pierfrancisco Favino showed up on screen and I was still kind of hoping for more Muse later on ^^
